LF a Single Player RPG - see details

Hi all!  I'm looking for a single player RPG for PC.  I like dwarves (i liked dwarves but dont like the combat), storylines, lore etc and I'm pretty flexible EXCEPT i don't want it to be adventure hybrids (fallout or mass effect) or anything thats not tab targetted.  i.e. no twitch rpgs.  I like the storylines of dragon age, but honestly the combat just got too busy for me. i do like action rpgs like diablo, titan quest.

I grew up with dragon warrior/quest but dont have a console now.  I do like old school / classic rpg's like the dragon quest and the original final fantasy, but those on PC are hard to find of quality.  I.E. they are boxy (Phantasy star online bleh) and unpolished.

so something smooth and decently put together would be great (doesn't have to be cutting edge graphics, i dont mind cartoon / anime stuff but in my experience non-console anime / cartoon type rpg's are cheaply done and/or translated, but who knows..) i.e. its hard to get into the storyline when the translation doesn't make sense or uses asian english or asian plots.

when i say poorly done, think "mobile rpgs that are on the google store" type quality.  It seems like there are 7,000 rpgs on mobile and the traditional rpg ones seem like they are made by a 1 man dev team from a non english speaker or sth.

I'd recommend Divinity: Original Sin and Pillars of Eternity. If you like classic RPGs you have to play them both. :)

Grim dawn is made by developers of titan quest. Shadowrun: dragonfall if you look for a good turn-based cyberpunk RPG.

I would recommend the Atelier series. Some people think they are too manly to play those games and miss on a fun JRPG series thats been going on for decades. I dont know how good are the two most recent entries which also released on steam (i own them on PS4 and are on my playlist queue), but the older ones are great. I can see why they are not for everyone, but still a fun series.

Of course Witcher 3 is a must play if you like more actiony yet full fledged western RPGs.

Tales of Berseria is another JRPG i would recommend. The Tales series is fantastic and it's been also going on since the Super Nintendo days.

Tides of Numenera recently released, if you like classic CRPGs.

If you like tactics/grid based combat, you can't go wrong with Disgaea, it's also on steam.

I think Dragon's Dogma is better, but Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is also available on steam. It is a pretty smooth and well fleshed out game, good combat and has little folk (gnomes I think, but those ugly little fuckers all look the same to me).

If you want something more old school, but turn based, you can take a look at the Legend of Grimrock 1 and 2 games. New games just old DnD esk feel.

one my faves FFX.Great story and each character has  great, very distinct personalities.
Yeah Witcher is definitely good as well. When comes to single playerrpg's like the FFX design type games because i am not in a rush,i can stand up ,go get a snack,go to the RR whatever.Phone rings in middle of a battle all is good.

As mentioned by poster above ,Dogma has interesting combat as does Amalur.Kingdoms of Amalur was actually going to be a really good fully fledged triple A mmorpg but ran out of money but as is the combat is pretty good/fun.

I never tried that Drakensang,i remember seeing the title but not sure why i avoided i,i might take a look at it now.

blueturtle already said Dragon's Dogma. It's tab targeted but feels actiony. It also has an mmoish feel to it.

    There's always Hatoful Boyfriend. :chuffed:
Though I don't think Dragon's dogma is tab target for melee. At least I don't remember a "lock on" button for that.

    Just mage/archer and healer.

Its only lock on for magic archer and some mage skills, pretty sure everything else is free targeting (incl normal archers); although its done so well that you probably won't feel troubled by it even if you are a tab-target fan.

It has other cool mechanics like being able to pick up enemies/friends and throw them off cliffs, climb on bigger monsters, and an actual real night time (its pitch black) when stronger mobs appear. It really does have a lot of cool ideas you don't often see in rpgs, many of which are pulled off well. Not much of a story though.

Tales of Berseria is honestly amazing, no dwarves in it though. And another vote for Pillars of Eternity.

Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen and/or Darkest Dungeon

I'll go with Dragon Dogma Dark Arisen as well.

Witcher 3 plus perhaps Dragonsang Dark Sun.

Arguably quite an upgrade from the original soundtrack.
