One server?

Does EVE really have only one server?
I've been looking for a new MMO to play, and EVE caught my attention.

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I couldn't find a search feature on these forums, sorry.

Well, Yes (and no). There is only 1 world (or realm) of EVE. But there are probably hundreds of physical servers that support that world. Having one world is very appealing. Once you or your corporation make a name for themselves, then you are either famous or notorious to everyone in EVE.

Having 1 world, is what the makers of EVE have strived for, as they have been able to claim world records in concurrent users in a single sharded MMO.

They have 70 Dual Opteron Blades hooked up to run all 5000 star systems of EVE. It acts as one realm, and thus one server in many ways, since all the star systems in the game are linked together.

Cool. Ya, I meant one world. I know that they obviously couldn't have it all on one physical server.

The vastness of the gameworld makes it possible. The game runs really well too, I have experianced some lag in the heavier populated areas, but nothing major. There seems to be a memory leak in the software which is really annnoying, but it's not to the point of being unbearable. Overall, I am very impressed with Eve.

There is currently one server but they are setting up a second server in china. This is mostly due to legal reasons, things like mmorpgs that wants to operate on the chinese market needs to be owned and run by a chinese company and other strange rules.

Theres 1 official server to everyone play, theres a 1 official test server (I never played) and this are virtual servers, they appear to you as 1, but probaly theres a lot of server to make the game work, like, game server, login server, item server, etc., and a lot of cluster to increse the overall performance.

I never searched for a unofficial servers, I dont know if they exists.

And they will only want Chinese people playing together.  That way they can't find out about things like freedom and the government not being able to put a bullet in the back of your head.

Someone in China gets murdered and it's linked to WoW so the goverment puts restrictions on internet gaming and limits all "citizens" to 3 hours play max per day.

Lucky no-one ever got murdered over a lover in China! Imagine it the goverment would have to restrict the amount of sexual positions and put a ban on oral sex and limit sex to once a week. Still wouldn't effect most married couples come to think of it!

As if anyone actually enforces the 3-hour limit rule. China isn't like 1984, get with the times and stop living in your small little box known as USA.

The law in China about playing 3 hours is only meant for those who use the Internet cafes.  Private home internet users can play as long as they like.  Also, people who have private home internet and those who use the internet cafe's must register with their local police within 30 days of using them.
