I was playing p1999 the other day and I came to the realization that, Everquest is the only MMO that I dont have my face planted in a map. I think not having a map made EQ feel like a real world to me. I didnt realize it at the time but i do now. I respect the fact that I can get on p1999 and know where im going like I was in my own city. My point is that If pantheon adds a M button, I really hope it just brings a plain map up but doesn't show your location.

I read someplace that they are using EQ classic combat. I loved getting duel wield, and double attack. I liked that when i got those skills i sucked at them, then I got better with use. Same with magic and fizzles .

Last but not least. My favorite part of everquest was twinking!  I understand some stuff having level restrictions, but I really hope we get twinking back with pantheon.

I would love to see a trade skill everyone can pick up that lets you make a map by exploring a zone to the full. One that VR designs so it gives info but not so much it's over done. If they don't add some map system it will just be a matter of time before someone finds a way to add a functional map. Be it web based or a program that has takes priority and stays the dominant window like most voice chats overlay.

Fact is all explorers make maps and that's what we are in any MMO like this. We need to be able to make maps and mark on it where the best place to fish is. Where our favorite camp is. This is what explorers do.

I think a cartography trade where players create more detailed maps the higher level they get would be great. Whatever they do, a player should never have GPS.

I still think no maps is probably the better way to go, and as the OP said, part of why the EQ world felt much more real. You actually had to learn the terrain to find your way around.

The real problem with maps is that they always show where you are in RPGs, I think you still could keep the map and have the world feels just as real as long as you got rid of that part.

I really have to agree with this.  People are going to have access to maps, period. Even in EQ days we had EQ Atlas, and everyone constantly alt tabbed to check maps.

What I really like is this idea, have a cartography skill that levels up and "discovers" the area you're in the more and more you run around and visit it, make dungeons particularly difficult to fully "discover" due to their complex and vertical nature.

Yeah, unless, of course, you printed out one of the widely available zone maps and used that. Which so many people did of course.

No maps are inevitable, they are far too useful to ignore.

With a good map, a reliable compass, and a straight edge I can locate myself within a small triangle of error in a few minutes.  Comparing the ground to the map I can improve my sense of were I am. I could do this at age 11, why should it be harder in a computer game?

EDIT: For the benefit of the young, this was 50+ years ago and no GPS was involved. In latter life I learned to use charts and a sextant too.

I mentioned Cartography years ago because simply given maps is a bit out of place. In FFXI we had to buy the maps and some had to be quested,so you were not simply given the maps.I felt it was done correctly, buy maps for main towns and nearby areas but distant and discovered areas you had to earn the maps via quests.

It is the same problem every developer will face,"WIKI leaks" and game integrity lost.It is a very tough problem to fix or avoid, pretty much impossible.I think MOST players will still want to earn a Cartographer skill or earn the maps because it would be easier to actually have it in game to quickly popup rather than clutter our desktop with papers of every map and constantly checking wiki for recipes and quests.

I feel if you make stuff RARE enough, valuable enough, people will keep them to themselves for a very long time.I witnessed it in FFXI with crafting recipes and an extremely popular gardening recipe to make elemental ores. That recipe was a secret for almost 2 years because it was incredibly valuable, players getting rich off it.
That leads to another area....discovery,.the more discovery ideas and with high value ,it crates a lot more fun stuff for players to do.I feel this is an area devs have missed the boat on,we do NOT need item levels/end game loot grinding to have fun,i prefer to NOT do that crap.

It reminds me of one area i really liked in the EQ2 game ,all those collectibles were fun and i am pretty sure mot others enjoyed it as well.
I also knew lots of players who loved spending days crafting and going to fairs so they could decorate their homes.

Screw cash shops, mount quests are fun and the reward is great.
You give the players enough stuff to disco and enough rewards and events ,REAL content that is not aimed at leveling and players would love to pay subscriptions and come out everyday to play.
Probably hear me say it a LOT>>>>EFFORT

Most young people have the attention span of a gnat.  You are living in a delusion if you think they'll be coming in legions for this game.  I want this game to get made and I will try it.  But you need to get a reality check and realize this game will be niche at best.

yeah i used to have printed maps for old games , even mapped them myself for important NPC's or Mobs.

To be honest, most young people don't play MMOs or RPGs in general even if they played some form of video games.

We're not trying to break records here, just waiting for a nice game for those who play MMOs and still think the RPG part should be included in MMORPG.

The better statement would no or limited in-game maps, with no GPS.

There was never a problem with out of game mapping, if anything it encouraged immersion instead of breaking it. It meant you, as the player, had to actively participate in the mapping process.

Why wouldn't we want maps?  If there are civilizations living there then it would have been mapped.  I don't understand what the deal is with no maps.   It does not make it more immersive to not have a map.

It is a variation on the "in my day we walked uphill in the snow to school every day, even July!"   argument.

Of course there will be some form of maps.  Either you will have to look them up on google, get from other players, or they will eventually add them.
  • MendelMendel Member LegendaryPosts: 5,609
Of course there will be maps.  Instead of wasting time discussing how much you'd like a game without maps, I'd rather see the community rally against a map system that is much of a travesty as the EQ map system was.  For the record, EQ didn't start with an in-game map.  That was introduced with the LoY expansion.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

Just because they will be inevitable, doesn't mean they have to be provided in-game. That logic is fail in all of it's applications.

There's something to be said about not worrying about certain unnecessary aspects of the game, and just letting players take care of it. Maps are only one example. Systems of trade are another. Voice chat would be another. Fancy UIs are another.

At this point I'd say they should just focus on providing the game and basic functionality to play it. Let the players worry about the details and figure out ways to do the rest. That was the philosophy that made EQ feel more like a world, and less like a game.

No, this needs to be a modern MMO. All that stuff needs to be worked out before launch. This is not 1999 when there was no options. Not saying we should have a WoW style auction house but tools for trading with others needs to be in at launch. Voice chat needs to be good to go and VR has already said thats the plan. They have also said they have something to test for a trading system. Just letting players work it out with major systems will not cut it any more.

I would like for there to be a map that shows the places I have already been. And I don't mean you see an entire zone just by poking your head in. More like a riding lawnmower path that reveals as you go.

No GPS. No spoilers. Maybe a few major landmarks like a mountain range or a river -  something of that magnitude that would be added to your map as part of a quest.

Of course. the last time I mentioned this, some people somehow construed that suggestion as a complete fully filled out map with ez mode instant travel to anywhere, GPS and a traveling valet.
