Usables system being done brings back that first peak at the ability to move and place objects freely. The much wanted dynamic FOV, the UI is looking great for it.
A lot of detail on the stamina/oxygen system even including suit punctures seems to be something that's going to change a lot of how the gameplay is driven on things as FPS.
The Javelin is massive, If I do get lost on a Starfarer we'll need some UI Map to move inside that thing lol
Now today is 3.0's day, where the in-depth production report will be out so we will finally have an in-depth look at its feature-set and its current status.

you can try out the game in its current Alpha state for free when the next free fly event starts. There is usually one every two months.

How many more ships need to be bought to facilitate the first question?

Actually it is at this very weekend until Tuesday.
True - not official yet, but very likely. Do not download until you see the official announcement on the top of the official homepage - otherwise the registration asks you for 54 bucks instead of getting it for free by typing in the free fly event phrase.
".....Gardiner and Stephan also allude to a free-fly weekend for the holiday....."
“....I don’t want to spoil the official announcement but all I can say is ‘Pink Dragonfly,'” Stephan says."
Pink Dragonfly may be the phrase to type in to get the free fly weekend.
Caveat:
it IS a large download for the Alpha client. So... Steve .... i recommend to download overnight unless you have a fast cable connection. Takes about an hour or two with a fast connection.

I try to look at it this way. . they have a team working on ships that would have maybe been out of work years ago if they stuck to the original plan. Ships make them tonnes of money and those people are still working and people are still buying ships. They could use those "resources" to work on something else but they are likely generating a lot more revenue than they cost. . so they actually mean more people working on the rest of the game.
This is my leaky glass is still half full optimism

Especially the Vanduul ships ... which we do not see because most of them are not "for sale"
except for some human adapted replicas and human adapted captured ships.
In the SC subforum here, especially in the Ship thread you see many Vanduul ships (some information has leaked).
