imageWhy Aren't There Any Mobile MMOs? - General Columns

With mobile giants like Supercell tearing up the game space online, it is amazing that the mobile MMO market is so poor. I know what everyone wants to say, there are mobile MMOs. Yes, there are, however, it seems like for the massive amount of people who play games on their phones or tablets, the full potential of the market simply does not exist.

There are a few MMOs on IOS now but I haven't played them in a while so not sure on the community..There is Order & Chaos 2 by Gameloft and the original one Order and Chaos Online, those are the only two I can think of with a WOW type setting on mobile

I'd say the one to mention here is Albion Online, seeing the way it has the clear intent to be one mobile MMO.

(someone double posted the news article)

Dofus Touch? It is exactly same as PC version ported to mobile phones/tablets. To be honest there are plenty mobile MMO's another must be mentioned MMO is Warspear Online.

Just my opinion: I have zero interest in paying for and playing a mobile MMO, regardless of how well it's done. I don't want to be hunched over for extended periods looking at a tiny screen with touch-screen controls, playing a "mobile" game on wifi somewhere because mobile data pings suck.

There are mobile MMOs. Minus the slew of cruddy imports, there is Orders and Chaos Online (the second version looks and plays great!) and Villagers and Heroes, which has crafting housing, raiding, and plays across PCs, Android, and iOS. There are several others like Celtic Heroes, etc.

I can link 15 for you right now. :)

That's why he said there are. The title got you in here though. Rascally @garrett

Now me? I think that the upcoming Dinosaur one from Nexon (I think?) is actually really good when I played it. I wish it was actually a PC game.

As long as I'll have a choice between 23"+ screen and 5" screen - 23"+ will always win.

However I'd actually play PC + mobile MMO hybrid which would allow me to perform certain slow activities on a mobile phone (various card games like crafting, gathering, auction trades, quest dialogs etc). For action I want bigger screens and maybe a joystick.

    Thank you for your time!

Uh.. there are quite a few MMOs on the mobile app stores. Hell, there are a few MMOs that have been ported from PC over to Mobile in nearly a 1:1 state. MU Origins is an example of this. It's a nearly identical port from the original MU Online game. I've also seen a few Asian themed MMOs get ported over to mobile as well. (I'm on Android, so I cannot verify this for iOS).

That being said, to @BillMurphy, if the article does say there are MMOs but the title was to attract attention to the article, I'd suggest avoiding click baiting titles. Right now there is a huge controversy against Click Bait titles lately, specially regarding articles against Google, YouTube, and a few other major news outlets. Please don't encourage click bait. I get it, we all need to make money, but some people just aren't interested in certain topics and using a title such as that to trigger a response from someone is what makes it click bait. Such as myself, I don't exactly care for the mobile gaming scene. However, the title baited me going "What? No MMOs on mobile? That's bull.".

I come to MMOrpg.com for most of my video game news. As a streamer and past community manager for another gaming portal which I won't disclose here. MMOrpg.com is one of the few sites I can respect and rely on, but if click bait is going to start showing up on the site; then I'll migrate somewhere else.

There's actually a lot of full fledged MMO's on mobile. I'd say far too many. The thing is they're mostly Asian. Spend some time reading through Steparu's website or his Youtube and that's almost all he covers lately because there's so few good new PC MMO's now in the Asian market. In fact he posted a new video today of a mobile version of Vindictus/Mabinogi.

I for one hope mobile MMO's die a huge, swift, and permanent death. The screen is so small and interface so limited I just can't have fun. The need to click around on my phone for long periods of time to play one makes my hands hurt just thinking about it. And we need these companies to invest in amazing PC MMO's. That's where it's at.

Terrible idea. Let's go back to pretending mobile MMO's aren't a thing.

Here I even went and did a search for you. Mobile versions of full fledged MMO's are a huge trend in the Asian market right now.

Celtic Heroes and Order & Chaos 2 are both not terrible.

I did enjoy Order and Chaos 1 & 2 both for a bit, and Celtic Heroes did have some great qualities as well. However, I think the company that's making the best mobile MMOs as of now has to be asobimo. Avabel and Aurcus Online both are top quality. They've got a new one in development too called Gate of Rebellion that looks absolutely amazing, and uses the Unreal 4 engine, while still being a full-fledged open world action MMO (unlike other Unreal 4 "mmos" in dev like Like Lineage 2 Revolution or w/e)

Click bait, like "fake news" gets overused. This wasn't click bait. Click bait is "you won't believe what happens next..." articles. This was just a lead in title with a corrective follow up. A little bad taste maybe, but not click bait.

Well from my standpoint it was definitely less clickbait than the usual multi link threads we see.

So i cut it some slack and read the article.

Most of what Garrett eludes to is correct but i do not condone it .I don't want an industry bent on making money,i want an industry bent on making QUALITY games.

I thought, hoped PRAYED we were done with the Farmville phase of over supported CRAP gaming but nope,in comes mobile gaming to take over.

I will flat out say it,people and their cell phones are way out of hand to down right ridiculous.I see people/streamers fondling their phone like it was their child or show MORE care towards a phone than their children.

Anyhow on the subject of MMO+mobile, the FFXI remake will easily be the ONLY game actually worth supporting. It is using the Unreal engine, has two teams behind it as well i am quite certain they paid extra to get the needed technical support from Epic games to make sure it comes out as top notch quality.

When i see stuff like Clash Royale and many other similar titles making millions,it makes me sick. All of those mobile games could be dumped into a dumpster and sold for $5 at some bargain basement sale.

MANY people are not even using phones,i would bet a VERY high majority are not using phones,so why bother making games for them? Most are using emulators, i know if the FFXI remake came out as good as i predict i won't be playing it on any phone and that is a 100% guarantee.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Hmm, I can definitely agree with that assessment, as the "what happens next..." articles are much worse.  @Torval I stand corrected.

While the tech is getting to the point where they have the CPU and the memory to handle the complex code of a MMO, the small screens and being stuck with a touch screen UI make it extremely difficult at the present time.  Even a tablet with the larger screen still has to deal with making the touch screen useful.

Why are you so bias against the Windows Phone. You only portrayed it as every phone in the first photo, and the only phone with a smiley face in the second photo? Do you think Windows Phone does not have the depth of frowny faces as Android and iOS? Your bias is clearly shown when you are talking about a problem that does not affect the Windows Mobile platform. There are not enough RPGs to make finding the good ones difficult.

I cannot see myself investing any time into a mobile mmo at all. Honestly I highly question if it will catch on period. MMOS are not really in good health atm with moba and such just slaughtering them in the market atm. MMOs are also games with time investments... both are a negative for the phone as a platform.

Even if it is great and not pure p2w I do not see myself ever playing a phone mmo.
built a gaming rig, mmos I play for sometimes 5+hrs in a setting.

I have no intention or want to be on a small screen from that long. Also I do not see how a full fledged mmos can work on a phone with party mechanics, boss mechanics, and such. The platform is just way to limiting... and if you tailor it to the phone well you are dumbing the game down to an extreme.

I want to play mmos on high def, large screens, big sound system, with all my fancy toys attached to it. Why would I downgrade to a phone? Hell if mobile is the thing, then my gaming laptop fills that void. and If it is a situation where I cannot use my laptop... is playing a mmo really even viable due to the time requirement.

My opinion but I think devs need to invest into making non-p2w unique mmo games on the main consoles and not throwing money away on a quick get money fast phone projects.

The biggest problem with smartphones, tablets even when it comes to that, is screen size. I have a Kindle Fire, the screen is reasonably sized for the type of device it is, but its not suitable for MMO's, or any game really that needs more than 'candy crush' type of controls, and thats it, its not a bad device for watching the odd movie, or reading a book, or playing an app like candy crush, but a full sized game, you need a full sized screen and the full sized peripherals to interract with it, anything less is more a case of trying to squeeze an elephant into a mini, cramped and not very comfortable. O.o

Mobile MMOs sounds in general extremely bad. But yeah, prove me wrong.

My eyes couldn't cope with playing on a phone/tablet. Plus I can't see the complexity of an MMO translating well to a mobile platform.
