My top list

I will try:
Face of Mankind: Decently large world (many planets and cities) to get lost in and hack properly.
DnD: Intelligent world and quests. Even with a limited area the DnD universe has allot of backstory so evey building should be very interesting at least and I am looking for complex (not simple) dungeon quests.
SWG: The only SciFi game to offer a complete universe to explore and live and build in. Not just focussesd on battle but also other player types like beurocrat, freelancer etc.

Wishlist: Vanguard - because it is supposed be like SWG in terms of seamless landscape and non-combat missions but fantasy.

I would like to try Horizons because of its random destructble environments. I would like to see how much players could create their own quests similar to FOM but that's more money of course.

*I dont want to play EQ2 because even the so called complex questing (from the quests lists I have read) are just a bunch of simple quests thrown together even at the highest levels. The dungeons seem week to me or non-existant.

OK, flame away.

You have to get Guild Wars Factions when it comes out, or the original Guild Wars. It's the best game I've every played. If you can't take my word that it's a great game, atleast check out a trailer.

Without meaning to really "flame" it I recommend calling Vanguard's site and spending some time on the message boards. Vanguard despite all hype is not going to be anything at all like most people think it is. I've actually been wondering with all the stuff being said if the designers are intentionally spreading lies about it to try and get larger initial sales or something.

When I was on Vanguard's site the basic comments were that it is going to be a hard-core, elitist, PVE/Raiding game. The idea is to cater to lifestyle players who form huge guilds and compete with other guilds, and to reward the top 1% of the people on a server with godlike power and resources while all others look on with awe.

In general while there is going to be some low-end solo content, it's not really going to go anywhere from what they have said. Basically if your even remotely casual your basically a cheerleader to make the people at the top of the game feel good about themselves.

One of their general policies is that they feel that the top players in the game should be catered to with special content. Someone more or less directly told me there that they feel it's 'wrong' that someone who simply buys the game should feel entitled to eventually see all the zones/fight all the monsters simply by putting time into the game. So as a result I get the impression it's going to be a lot like a more competitive "Planes Of Power" for EQ 1 except even more draconian in keeping the the masses locked out of say the top 20% of the content if not more.

So basically it seems to be a game where your average player is going to spend all his time looking for a group and eventually find out he can't go any further without being part of an uber-guild. Since my understanding is that bad members can actually hold a guild back in this game, elitism is encouraged, so simply getting in with a huge "LLTS" or "KoY" (Kowards Of Ysebrius for those who have heard of them) guild is not going to work. Rather the idea is to see guilds like "Afterlife" and "Fires Of Heaven" (of EQ Fame) running everything.

Please keep in mind these are MY impressions from having been on their forums. I could in the long run be proven wrong. In general I'm not a "troll" so I moved on since I really felt after a bit of discussion that Vanguard is moving in a direction totally contrary to the needs of someone who works 8-10 hours a day and there was little to say since it's not like in a situation like this someone like me is going to convince a company they are wrong in their central philsophy. I *MIGHT* try it when it comes out, but right now it's not a major priority.

At any rate, what this means is that any of the stories you've heard about it being solo/small group-friendly to the highest levels (sort of like WoW) seem to be lies. Indeed making the game the opposite of WoW in that respect seems to be their battlecry. As far as a dymanic "SWG" type world/economy, I'm not really sure about that because I haven't heard it contridicted by the design philsophy, although there does seem to be some official implication that it will include similar elements. Any way it goes you have to remember that ANY system that is going to be put into the game is going to favor the hardest, most 'leet', PVP raiders in the game. Your typical person isn't supposed to be able to succeed to any great extent or get access to any high end content without being in that top 1%.

I am guessing the idea is that they want to try and make thing competitive enough where they are hoping the "top spots" will fluctuate in each server. Say seeing "Fires Of Heaven" and "Afterlife" duke it out. From experience I have seen that such things rarely work as the best of the best usually wind up staking out differant servers, and the "top dogs" are usually able to entrench themselves in such a way that it's impossible to really unseat them. Every attempt (including the WoW PVP system) has in so far failed as anyone THAT good is ultimatly going to find a way to exploit it, even if it means getting all the 'leets' together since noone would be holding the guild back if everyone was properly 'leet'.

The Eberron DnD universe has tons of backstory yes, but DDO only touches on very very little of it. If you don't know anything about Eberron, then this may not bother you so much. If you know a lot about Eberron, it may bother you quite a bit. Just a small warning.

The quests are good and oftentimes challenging and fun the 1st time through, but cease to be "complex" and fun once you've repeated them a few times and know where everything is and what to expect.

As always, you should always try to snag a trial if you can.
