imageDiablo 2 Remaster? Brevik Says Not As Easy as It May Seem - MMORPG.com News

Former Blizzard North co-founder David Brevik was interviewed recently by Diabloii.net. During the discussion, Brevik was asked how plausible a remastered Diablo 2 might be. "They'd have their work cut out for them," he mentioned alongside the information that a lot of the assets from that time period likely do not still exist. In addition, Brevik said that games were made differently back then than they are now. Changing even the slightest thing might not keep the same feel.

Easy? Maybe not. Profitable in sales of a remastered edition? Definitely.

As much as I loved D2, I won't play a remaster. But I would definitely play a remake.

Assets "some" do not exist? umm so the game does not exist?
I think sometimes these devs feel like they are talking to dummies.
Truth behind moves like this is that it takes a lot of cost and resources but does not guarantee the same big sales as the original.
Square Enix was in the same boat for many years asked to do remakes. They made every excuse in the book as to why not but then eventually did it ,made money and now is seemingly doing it for every game.

I think they are simply afraid of the risk versus reward and could they be doing something different with those resources, like a new IP and make more money.I can't speak from a fanbois perspective but to me at least, doesn't seem even remotely worthwhile to remake D2 while they are selling D3 and likely a D4 soon to come.

Well, let's be fair - there is a difference between having an asset and having a product. Take a photoshop document for example. You may have the final .tiff or .jpeg that you finished from photoshop, however if you do not have the .psd and resources anymore you are missing those assets to make changes, and can only change to finished product. So, yes they might actually not have the original assets and would have to manipulate code or completed product and it might not give the final desired result. Just because the game exists on a CD does not mean they have the original assets to remake and remaster it easily.

Just give me D4 and quit playing with the old stuff, can still make a new game and add content from D2 and be just fine..

I remember in Everquest 2 they had lost some assets because they had changed them and had not backed up the originals. They had to reconstruct the Isle of Refuge and it took one guy sleepless days to recover it and even then some quests had to be removed.

So they can lose some assets.

They apparently had all assets for Starcraft - or remade them close enough. Why shouldn't they have them for Diablo II, which was released 2 years later? Unless he means to say he was a sloppy president or has some other personal reason to believe why they would be gone.

Given his history after Blizzard, jumping from company to company and not getting done anything, maybe it's just from his personal experience.

There's also other remasters out there, like Final Fantasy or Age of Empires II HD, and dozens or hundreds of mods for popular old games to allow for a higher resolution and sometimes even new, high resolution textures.

And why would they remake it in 3D? because the assets are gone or what?

He sound incredibly negative given that it was part of his job as president of Blizzard North that such a thing doesn't happen (of course they might have been lost later, but then he has even less reason to assume such a thing, as last he knew, they were totally safe, unless they *did* get lost while he was still president..), and given that Blizzard does seem to do a wonderful job with the Starcraft remaster.

Is it not just a matter of art, e.g., replacing low poly models with high-poly models, higher-res textures, volumetric lighting, height-map blending, etc? The code itself should have very little to do with any of it.

We don't need another D2, would be redundant.
What we need is Diablo 3 made by the original team at Blizzard NORTH (as opposed to Blizzard South which made WoW).

I'll admit, if they do this, I'm buying it asap. This game consumed so many years of my life....and I dont regret a single moment of it...until the expansion that is.

They should do D2 gameplay with D3 graphics. People would buy that.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

I would definitely pay real money for a 3D version of the game.
