As someone who has just recently had another look at the swgemu (pre-nge) i have to say, there are a lot of things that made the game great, while i was on there were over 1000 others playing at the same time so i can only imagine they feel the same way, its just a shame that it doesn't appear to have the JTLS expansion enabled, which is something the legends version does, the unfortunate thing about the legends version however is that its the NGE version, which was horribad.
The game felt "adult". It was extremely complex. I literally felt like I was a part of the game... and not in some cheesy "iconic" way like in SWTOR...
for me was more simple, you are just one more dude living on a star war universe, not the hero, not the chosen, jsut one more dude trying to survive there and in doing so if you really did something to be a hero was because you amde it happen not was scripted to let you be the hero(or the vilain if you liked with you could)
Still looking for anything that comes near that experience.
Have fun

Yo to all smugglers of the YCS Yazuka Crime Syndicate on Naritus server !
Best greetings to all citizens of the city of LoknLoad on the planet Lok from your favorite architect.
Thank you to all loyal customers of Aratech Enterprises - the best droids and spaceships in the galaxy !
Ahh Naritus. My first server and where my first Smuggler was made. I made quite a living with Dwozzle's (my character's name) Chop Shop just outside of Bespin. Purveyor of clamp and knife crates for every Smuggler's grinding needs. I actually ended up putting a large home in LoknLoad too just before the Trials of Obi Wan. /tipshat
Sadly I can't find where to buy the game and importing isn't an option at the moment (or like ever). But I got like really happy to see the numbers on their servers.
Does anyone if there is a way to purchase a digital copy?
Same...if I could get a copy that would be awesome. I would play the emu until the server burned down. I really miss the original SWG.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.
In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

There are a few copies on Amazon and many more on Ebay. However, they are pricey.

I've seen a lot of old games at resales shops. Never really looked for anything there but it's a thought. Or if you have a friend who could look and ship it to you.

Think you could say all most mmo's them days felt adult. EQ felt adult along with DAOC and so fourth.
MMOs were a whole different experience in those days compare to the mmo's of today.
The last mmo to give me that adult feel was Vanguard.

Yeah, but that's the thing: I live on Brazil and Amazon Brazil doesn't have it (they deal mostly with books since under certain cost it has no taxes).
Brazilian government taxes games 75% (before conversion), same tax as gambling related things. It means they would check my stuff when it gets it and suddenly it costs an impossible amount of cash. Adding the fact the BRL-Dollar ratio is insane now.
.... When they don't "lose" it mysteriously (and someone's kid now has a new game to play) because our mail is government-owned corp, no private sector allowed here.
So you are saying, if you ordered it from e-bay someone would go through the box before it was delivered to you?

That freedom is precisely what eentually made it unpopular.
I've been seeking that kind of freedom ever since I played Everquest and UO. My newest love is Wurm Online on the Chaos server, since I think PvE is too boring. But even Wurm Online fals short of what SWG did. The probelm is gamers just don't like that sort of thing. They wnat a guarantee of enjoyment. And that usually means elimination of freedom and replacement by strict rules added amusement parks.

I think in many ways you are right.
I love having freedom and "less rails". A friend of mine who does play video games can't stand it. He wants to play "a game". He wants to have all the challenges laid out, where to go, etc.
Probably one of the reasons I loved Morrowind so much. I was greeted by a "well there's a tavern up ahead otherwise good luck!".
To me those words (paraphrased) were the most compelling words I ever read in a video game.

I think you just perfectly surmised the entire Themepark/Sandbox debate. I would guess (no stats to back this up) that the majority of players want enough challenge to keep them busy for a few hours, but not so much that they have to make long-term plans about how they will spend their game time.
I think developers get that and cater to it because it makes them money.
Well put.

Greatest crafting system - all master weaponsmiths were not the same, it came down to your resources and how long you had been playing. Older crafters had an advantage over newer ones just like in real life.
Fantastic home modeling stuff - Some of the house interiors were amazing and the community found ways to combines items to make even cooler stuff.
Fully customizable characters - Just because some guy was carrying a pistol, did not mean he was not able to fight you hand to hand. You could skill up any combination of skills you wanted
Bounty Hunting - You could hunt players and kill them for cash. Send a droid up, find the planet they were on. Go there, send a different droid out, find their location and go hunt them. It was awesome!
The game was far ahead of its time. Had it released today on todays game engines, it would be bigger than WoW.

What a lot of people forget is that in 2003, 500k players was a great success, today 1m players is a conplete failure. The newer SW mmorpg went F2P when they only had 1m players left.
ESO who have sold 10m copies struggle to create new content. 4 new dungeons in 3 years...
When I first began the process of designing a game, Star Wars Galaxies, along with City of Heroes and a scant few others, really did act as huge inspirations.. There is so much to learn from SWG and so many great ways to evolve the concepts it introduced or highlighted in its own way..

I can remember entire play sessions that just consisted of staring at the professions screens deciding how to progress my character (carbine/pistol/medic/dancer). Deciding what I wanted my role to be in the game.
Heck even it's start where YOU decided which planet you wanted to start on could effect how you played the game.
SWG was not just something you mindlessly played (although you could), you had to think about what you wanted to achieve and I think that left a lot of potential customers of the younger set out in the cold. Hence the NGE where less planning / thinking was involved.
Even with the bugs etc... I still have great memories of playing on Kettemoor.
