Crafting in EVE

I'm wondering is EVE is worth a try.
I enjoy mining, crafting and exploration. At the same time, I think I'd like to explore the game on my own for a while. EVE is famous for its big corporations and large group coordination.
Is it viable to play as a lone wolf and make some profits (even if small), as an individual mining and creating items?
