I have been keeping my eye ALOT on CoH/CoV and have been wondering how exactly does this work. So you don't NEED CoH to play CoV correct? I was also told alot by alot of people that this game was not challenging at all, the PVP was ok, the "guilds" weren't the greatest and community was only ok as well. I have read a few threads already but would like to know more. so if those can answer these questions it would be greatly appreciated. thanks. -exo
* is it a MUST to have CoH in order to play CoV?
* Is the PVP atleast decent? and is it RvR, Frontier or arena? or even all 3?
* How are the guilds? and how do they work?
* whats the PVE combat like?
* how many levels are reached untill completed?
*Is the community active? and not compltely immature? ( yes you get immature in every game, just thought i might have a sli mchance off hope their might not be any)
* customization, does everyone tend to look the same?
* are quests repetitive and will gameplay be repetitive for the hardcore gamer in less then a week?
*are there loading zones?
* but most of all are those who play tired of this game in less then two months?

Well first off I have been playing the game for 2 yrs now.
PVP- Currently there aare 3 zones for this. Each zone is different. Bloody Bay starts at lvl 15. Heroes vs vilians. Each zone has missions to complete. No debt for PVP battles but u will get debt if a NPC kills yeah.
Siren's Call is the next PVP zone. There are missions here also and the starting lvl is 24. This is the most used zone in the game. On the map there is hotspots shown where battles between the villians and heroes(NPC's) are happening. This is still heroes vs villians. Also there is bounty to be collected in theis zone. When you defeat an opponent you collect bounty. If you collect enough bounty you can cash it out for enhancements.
Warburg is a free-for-all zone. Missions here also. But the lvl for this zone starts at lvl 32 i believe. Since its a free-for all it is quite chaotic. I would say for the server I am on this is the second most popular.
Arenas: Lots of diffferent types of matches and they added gladiator matches now. Gladiator matches are fights with NPC's you get. In order to get an NPC, you have to get a badge for them. Arenas are available from lvl 5 and up.
With issue 7, new zone is coming if you read the article. LVL 50 zone and its like a capture the flag theme.
You don't have to get COH to play COV.
Supergroups are the name for guilds in COH/COV. You can build bases. You can use them for raids. In issue 7, you will be able to get an item of power that bebfits the whole SG but can be stolen in raids.
This is basically an action rpg. From melee combat to shooting to all types of powers.
Lvl 50 is the highest lvl in the game. COH currently can get to lvl 50. Once you reach lvl 50. two new races are available to heroes to play.
Well as for the community it depends on the server you join. I belong to Liberty server. We are a more mature bunch with some immature people not much though. If you are more interested in an active PVP playing server Freedom might be more to your liking.
Heroes and villians both got an update to new customes. So you might look somewhat close to someone but the same unless you choose a monster look.
Missions tend to look the same but do have different pathes and make up of enemies. Also the level of hardness can be changed.
Loading zones are part of the transportation system. As in when you move from Port oakes to mercy island a load scen will come up but it is quick. Also loading when u eneter and leave a mission.
Well as for time it depends I guess on the SG you join and the things you like to do. I own both sides of the game. I run two SG- one villian and one hero. I do alot of stuff as in PVP, monster hunting, collecting badges and bonus powers. Also you can get auras and capes by doing missions. But you can get bored in the game if you just want to team and no one in your SG in on. I mostly soloed the game at first until I joined an SG. So research the forums for a big SG that will always have someone on. Holiday events have been get so far.
So hopefully this answers your questions.

Not at all. I would reccommend you have CoV in order to have access to base-building features and whatnot.
* Is the PVP atleast decent? and is it RvR, Frontier or arena? or even all 3?
PvP was covered well in the first reply. There are many options for PvP to suit your particular taste. The 'jousting' issue that one poster mentioned does not exist because of travel suppression (your travel powers don't work while in combat). PvP isn't balanced towards 1 vs. 1 but rather towards 4+ teams. PvP is limited to certain zones and you are automatically set to certain level in these zones so ganking isn't quite as much of an issue.
* How are the guilds? and how do they work?
Supergroups are pretty awesome and you can pretty easily find one to suit your needs. As of I6, you can create bases for your group that are very customizable. You can eventually raid other groups' bases.
* whats the PVE combat like?
The combat system in CoX is very good. That being said, it's really the only thing to do since there's no crafting/economy to speak of. It's much more active than say FFXI or Lineage 2 but isn't a click-fest like DDO.
* how many levels are reached untill completed?
50.
*Is
the community active? and not compltely immature? ( yes you get
immature in every game, just thought i might have a sli mchance off
hope their might not be any)
CoX has the best community I've seen and I've play many MMO's. I play on the Virtue server which is the unofficial RP server and the playerbase is quite mature.
I never ever solo in CoX. You can very easily find people to team with and the playerbase is large enough that you can usually find four or five people of different classes in your level range who aren't already teamed. Missions are harder in teams and depending on the difficulty level (which you choose) can take a fair amount of strategy. The way I play, zerging is almost never an option.
* customization, does everyone tend to look the same?
Other than the people who blatantly rip off comic book heroes (there are Captain America's everywhere), most players look quite unique. The character creation system is the best I've seen so far and messing around with all the options is lots of fun.
* are quests repetitive and will gameplay be repetitive for the hardcore gamer in less then a week?
Missions generally involve going into an instanced zone and killing bad guys. So yes, there is repetition.
I find it fun because as your character develops, your gameply style and tactics change. Also, as you level, the enemies don't just get more hitpoints and do more damage, they adopt different strategies and tactics as well.
The enemies are also very different across the level ranges and within a level range there are usually several different groups. For example, from level 1 to 10, you can face Hellions, Outcasts and Skulls (three different street gangs), Clockwork, Circle of Thorn, Lost, Vhazilok, and one or two others. Each of these groups is quite different (Vhaz for example deal a lot of toxic damage and have bomb-strapped zombies that like to run into your group and detonate, while Clockwork are robots that zap you with electricity and drain your energy). You'll face new groups as you level.
*are there loading zones?
You get a loading screen anytime you change zones or enter/exit a mission. 5 seconds or so.
* but most of all are those who play tired of this game in less then two months?
No, not at all. This game is by no means perfect, but it's probably the funnest MMO I play right now. If you're looking for lots of end-game content (like WoW) or uber loot, then look elsewhere. But if what you want is to take a superhero concept and play from level 1 to 50, you'll have lots of fun and chances are you'll do it several times over with different types of characters. CoH is very different from most MMO's, which is a great thing for some people and awful for others.
Hope that helped.

That statement in absolutely crazy. I play on Virtue, and in the two plus years I've been playing, I've only had to put one person on my ignore list.
Just because you found a couple ass-hats in-game, don't blame the rest of the CoX community.

Can someone please elaborate more on the CoH/CoV topic?
Is CoV an expansion to CoH? Meaning do I have to get both to get the full benefits?
or is CoV the same as CoH but with added content?
or is CoH only allows you to create Heroes while CoV only allows you to create Villains?
To the OP.. I cant tell you how well this guy just nailed this game...If anyone ever wanted a proper review of this what this game is about.. Here it is.

You see, every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith
CoH and CoV are stand alone games. You can buy and play one or the other w/o a problem. They are also combinable, meaning if you own both and upgrade your account to include both, you pay the same monthy rate ($15/mo) as you would for one alone. If you choose to keep them seperate, you pay $15/mo for each game $30/mo). CoH and CoV share servers.
If you just bought CoH, you could only make Heroes, you DON'T have bases and you only have 8 character slots per server. You have full access to all hero zones as well as the three PvP zones.
If you just bought CoV, you could only make villains, you CAN have bases and you will have 8 character slots per server. You have full access to all villain zones as well as the three PvP zones.
If you combine both games, you can make both heroes and villains, you can have bases on both sides and you will have 12 character slots per server (not 16). Again, you will have only one $15/mo fee to pay this way. If you want the 16 character slots, you should keep the games seperate and pay the two monthly fees. At last count there were 11 live servers... so if you need more than 132 characters, there *are* 12-step programs for alt-holics. And yes, I'm Diana and I'm an Alto-holic!
It has been said that CoV is merely CoH with an evil exterior... YMMV but I think it's different enough to be interesting, but not drastically so that you have to learn a whole new game. It did take a little getting used to the new archtypes.
Cheers!~
