LA Noire had indeed a lot of work put on that area, even as old as it is it still shows how powerful the tech they had then is.
Without that need I could understand why a company wouldn't go "all out" in the animation department if it wasn't necessary.
They didnt go all out but it doesnt seem like they even reached the drive way. They just cracked the door open and had one foot out.
I'm not going to say that Mass Effect Andromeda did a good job on that front. Clearly they didn't.
However, the example wasn't really the right example other than to show what can be done with facial animations.
A better example could have been Witcher 3.
And then when you compare the combat the tables turn. ME:A has better combat than W3 or ME1/2. ME1 combat is atrocious much like W1. People just like to latch onto a flaw and run with it.
I've never liked any of the combat in any of the witcher games.

Wow just wow some people just still do not get it, BIOWARE is dead. They are no longer Bioware anyone with any talent is no longer there they are just EA wearing bioware T-shirts.

Just one flaw? I already listed the bugs I ran into on top of the poor animations and the boring themepark mmo side missions on top of the even more useless tasks. How does the tables turn when they are totally different combat systems. Should witcher have been third person cover shooter to be on par with andromeda?

It's possible that EA was already planning this before, on reviewing the studio/title at hand.
When Maxis got shut down, it was also after the events following Simcity and The Sims 4 releases. It kinda shows what happens when EA is not happy.
Great game and just shows how lazy publishers have become these days. I was really disappointed by ME:A. If one of your main game-play loop items is "face to face" interaction with NPC's then you need to polish it. Clearly that was not the case.

Yeah but we're talking about animations. You don't have to be "bioware" to make "great animations". I don't ever remember anyone talking about bioware being an "animation powerhouse".
Bioware is about their unique story telling. If you see a bioware game you know it's a bioware game.
So even if you think the quality of their storytelling has taken a dive because the original people are no longer heading the company, the ability to make decent animations doesn't depend on them being "Bioware".

Bioware game as described by the guy above this post is about story telling in which you interact with characters face to face a lot, I would say its important.
as someone who just shugged off the bad animations even i have to say that while watching some injustice 2 livestreams i literally said out loud damn injustice 2 even makes mass effect animations look like hot garbage lol

The sad part is that ME:A was not even developed by the Mass Effect developers Bioware Edmonton. ME:A was developed by Bioware Montreal. Different team, different producer, different everything. Not surprised Andromeda turned out to be what it is. I'm still waiting for it to be fixed before buying it, and since they just put it on hold i will be waiting for a long time. Patience is a virtue. The longer they put it on hold the cheaper it will get so i wont complain if i find it on sale for $5 bucks in a couple of months.

"yes" it is important to buy into the characters for the telling of a story. But Baldur's gate didn't have great facial animations, System Shock didn't have great facial animations, books don't have great facial animations.
the level of fidelity for the game you chose as your example was simply because there were subtleties in conversation that the player needed to recognize.
had that not been a cornerstone of their game play they most likely wouldn't have spent the time and money to make that happen.
And while I recognize that Mass Effect Andromeda could have done better in that department, they are functional. In some cases good in some "not so much".
It just all feels a bit precious to me. But then again I was a kid when this was amazing so my perspective is a bit different ...

Bad excuse, peoples standards rise alongside technology. And Books are not about interactivity, not even on the same category. I cant go back to games like Baldurs gate anymore or would pay 60 dollars for it. You dont see many pixel games being sold for the same amount as a triple A game.
Look at the facial animations of Horizon Zero Dawn, I would say its between Witcher 3 and LA Noire. And its quality has nothing to do with any gameplay mechanic in the game like LA Noire yet they chose to do it because they cared about it that much. And it made the game even more immersive.

I bet many of the fans wouldnt mind a remake with todays tech though. back then when I was playing Final Fantasy 7 or 6, I imagined in my head how awesome would it be if this was 3D like real life.

The point being that "to tell a story" one doesn't have to have the most intricate, detailed animations.
As far as people's standard's rising with technology, you need to understand the idea of scope. What is trying to be accomplished.
Darkest dungeon doesn't have advanced graphic technology or animations (though not really a storied game) but people who understand the scope of the game wouldn't expect it. Same with Baldur's gate. which, by the way, referring to your mention of price, Torment, Tides of Numenera does sell for about 50 dollars in some places.
Divinity Original Sin is about $50.
But that's another discussion.
Also, I do believe that interactive books do exist but again another discussion.
As far as your example with Horizon Zero Dawn, that is certainly a more pertinent example as L.A. Noir was not.

Uncanny Valley.. so close to the real thing yet so far off.. that it's just creepy. It's like a face has been stuck on a 3D model, in a bad way. I like the tech.. but it's strange. I prefer the usual style over these demon faces.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
Y'know... I hate to have to mention this, but age of a game or how high tech new rendering engines are has absolutely nothing to do with a games graphics. An artist has to (and always have had to) literally draw every detail you see.
It again, has nothing to do with technology or age. It has everything to do with the artists that created and textured the assets. Can these threads stop now?
I think it was DMKano that noted that the talented people that made Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2 are long-since gone. I really believe making a good video game is at least as much art as is it science. When the "artists" leave, all that's left are the bureaucrats and that's when the company starts cutting corners.
