Disney Announces Pirates Of The Caribbean MMO

Apparently even Disney is jumping on the MMO bandwagon. They have officially announced that at E3 this year they will reveal the first details on a new MMORPG based on the Pirates of the Caribbean license.

Disney Online will unveil the first images and a playable version of the never-before-seen Pirates of the Caribbean Online game at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) on May 10-12th in booth #1024, South Hall. This massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), slated for release in 2007, is based on the popular film franchise and will allow players to experience the world captured on screen. In the game, players will interact with Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann and other characters made popular in the movie franchise, as they embark on exciting quests in search of treasure and notoriety.

Pirates of the Burning Sea has been in development for so long, I wouldn't be surprised if Disney's deep pockets beat them to the finish line.

I guess PotBS just wants to make the game exceptional before its released, I dunno.

    A pirate MMO? without ELVES....???????

Right now ANYTHING without those pointy eared freaks would be welcome......

I think the fantasy RPG market is saturated right now, getting tired of the elves, dwarves, orcs and gnomes.

This has been a rumor for so long I wouldn't be suprised if Disney annouces that it will be released this summer, that sounds like something they would do.

Witty saying to amuse you goes here.

Exempting Zephrith, the license was popular but without the sort of following you see in Star Wars or LOTR. Sounds easier to do. Maybe it'll have some legs. Of course, if you're thinking some kind of authentic piracy experience (what the hell would that be, come to think of it)... You must've missed the movie.

Hmmm well it has some potential. To be honest though the big reason why I am staying away from games like "Pirates Of The Burning Sea" is that I'm not much of a one for historical reinactment/simulation.

See if they were to create a "piracy" based game set in a fantasy world where you could wield magic and such it would be cool. If they were to set t up where you could do both the sailing and personal exploration/combat (off of your ship) it would be even better.

The problem I see with "Pirates Of The Burning Sea" is that ultimatly what your doing is sailing goods from place to place and blowing up/raiding anything you see with the wrong kind of flag. I mean I can see it as an MMO, but I'd get bored. With your typical fantasy games all the various goblinoids, ghosts, spells, magic items, etc... add more variability to it.

The "Pirates Of The Caribbean" liscence has some potential because of the supernatural elements and such, but if they added too much variability (magic, etc..) they would ruin the entire atmosphere. I mean strictly speaking everyone would be some variant of a fighter (just as the game above) and you might kill the occasional skeleton or zombie (heck being Disney I'd imagine that might be all you'd fight seeing as it would allow them to sidestep the 'problem' of killing actual people) but it generally boils down to the same thing.

As silly as it sounds what I'd want to see is like a "Pirates Of Dark Water" MMO or something in that vein (using that universe would probably be a bad idea though, the designers should create one of their own).

If I could sail my ship from island to island and fight a combination of boats and giant sea monsters it would be cool. Then I'd imagine I'd want to be able to get off on the island and lead a few of my crewmembers (Mastermind type pets) on an adventure, perhaps allied with a couple of other captains, and then hop back in my ship to sail back to port to spend my booty/do my crafting/whatever.

I'd prefer a sci-fi game with space ships and planet exploration (as I mentioned) but pirates would be coool too if it was done correctly, and honestly I don't see any of the current developers going in the right direction. About the best I could see us hoping for out of the current batch of games is that they would get the nautical terminology fairly 'right' for the atmsophere without it interfering too much with game play, and the developers realizing that there is more than one kind of thing to load cannons with, and having the combat revolve around using "Balls, Chain Shot, Canister Shot, etc..." depending on the range and what you want to try and achieve. But even so that doesn't seem like it would hold my interest for long.

In general one thing to look out for is how the cannons are set on the ship. See in most renderings of ships in fantasy and RPGs the ships have a "gunnery deck" and they have a cannon set at each port. The things sit there even when the ship is at dock or whatever (sometimes without even a shutter over the port to protect the cannons). In reality the cannons would be set on carraiges and are rolled to the ports on either side depending on which way the ship is going to be firing for the most part. This reduces weight, allows for more space, and of course means that they are carrying less guns than what people would assume. Generally speaking if I see ships peacefully floating through a lagoon with a bloody cannon hanging out of a firing port on the side I'm going to be rolling my eyes a bit. :)

Just some time-killing comments. I'm not likely to play these games for the long term unless they dev notes really surprise me, but it will be interesting to see what kind of standards the devs have. :)

Disney.. Mmorpgs? Please tell me this is just another aprils fools joke. The only reason pirates of the caribean was cool was because of Jonny Depps  acting, and if i want a pirate mmorpg, i would prefer one with blood, robbery and gallons of rum, not one where i have to jump on all the evil monsters to discover some cheesy "destiny".

All i can hope for is that this will draw the attention of all the kids, so, sometime in the future, it will be possible to play WoW again.

I just hope it isn't cartoony. Pirate MMO might be wicked, too early to tell obviously.

well if it's a Disney thing there's a good chance it won't be rated ARRRRRRRRR.

    ugh, sorry.

but a PotC MMO might be a ton of fun. that's if they can get the feel of the movies (2nd one out soonish!).

now if only they could throw in a ninja too. need to have pirates and ninja all in one game!

so i do wonder if it'll be a race to finish line. PotC vs. PotBS. who will get there first?

Although the I give them credit for having the guts to jump into the foray. A pirate MMO might be a bad pick with Pirates of the Burning Sea in the making and looking pretty good from the details given about the game.

Disney should have taken a hint from their own success and instead of going this way. A Kingdom Heart game would probably be more attainable. They would have several advantages in making the game successful.

    1. Square in their corner. Snuff said

    2. A successful game series with a good strong following.

    3. An almost endless supply of content as they would be able to add in content as new movies are released.

    4. All the wonderful little children. Lets face it  given kids a game where they can interact with all their favorite Disney characters.... Snuff said.

    5. Even I wouldnt mind grouping up with some of my fellow MMO community and go beat up on some hearteless and nobodies. You give me a  game where I can summon up Donald to dish out some nasty spell effect damange and i am sold!

    Faranthil Tanathalos
    EverQuest 1 - Ranger
Star Wars Galaxies - Master Ranger
    Everquest2 - Ranger WarhammerOnline - Shadow Warrior
    WOW - Hunter

That's right I like bows and arrows.

PotBS is gonna get it's ass handed to them...  Partially serves them right too, leaving a game in development as long as they have is ludicrous...

They might say, "We want to make the best game possible, so it is going to take longer"...

I say, "If you can't afford to make a high quality game in a typical development cycle, then what the hell are you doing in this industry in the first place?"

Nothing against small businesses, hell, I work for one.  But in the end EVERYTHING is about moving product, these small time players can't hack it.  The only reason EVE is doing so well is it's history, and even that game is slated for a graphics upgrade.

Besides, most small development teams don't have the sales or negotiating talent that is required to secure funding for projects like this.  All it is are just some devs with some ideas that couldn't make a sales call if their life depended on it.  So they take their sweet time developing it, luring websites like this in, and have all of us fanbois drool over the game for years, only to find out that it is Vaporware or antiquated by date of release...

Doesn't Disney already have that "Toontown" thing or whatever where you fight robots who attack with "Buzzwords" by throwing muffins and stuff at them? I thought I read a review of it at some point. Maybe it was a joke in the same vein as the "World Of Starcraft" ad on Gamespot (I thought it was before then though that I was reading it).

At any rate a Disney MMO doesn't really surprise me, it's just that I could see them doing so many better things than trying to cash in on a momentary success like "Pirates Of The Caribbean".

I don't think the designers behind PotBS are that concerned really about Disney making PotC. And I doubt a PotC game would be all that bad. The sp rpg wasn't groundbreaking, but was fun in its own right. Add to that PotBS is more historically based than the setting for PotC, which would/should add elements seen in the movies.

At the very least it would be a departure from the letharigic march of the legions of boring Tolkienesque fantasy games. I see even the idea of that progress!

As long as games like PotBS or the possibility of PotC include both shipboard and portside action I'd be interested; something sci fi games are in some serious need of implementing.
