Will SWG live past the next wave of MMO's ?

admriker444admriker444 Member Posts: 1,526

Seems each time a decent MMO launches, SWG's numbers drop a little lower as players flock to it. It started with FF11, then City of Heroes, and WoW really hurt them.

Now SWG is faced with another wave of MMO's and these may just put her out of her mysery.

Vanguard - provides what many swg refugees are seeking, complex gaming.

Pirates of Burning Sea - offers a unique setting and fantastic graphics

Age of Conan - combat looks very interesting (being able to hack off body parts)

LOTR - my personal opinion, game will fail as its been in development too long. However, there are many Tolkien fans who will flock to the game (Including me to try it)

Roma Victor - a crafting system that makes even SWG seem simple by comparison. Graphics need work though

Tabula Rasa - interesting concepts and might be a sleeper hit.

And then next year the wave of MMO's continues with Star Trek and Stargate Worlds. I cant honestly see SWG making it through these MMO's intact. The remaining player base of less than 40k will likely flock to at least one of the above listed MMO's.

SOE wont pull the plug though, even if the population drops to zero (as a dev stated in Austin). The game is obviously headed to PS3. However, if the PS3 is delayed again expect SWG to close shop by the end of the year.

It does seem obvious that they are COMPLETELY banking on the PS3 to save them.  They're probably trying to have SWG ready for PS3 when it is released.  Hence, the timetable for all the changes to take into October.  PS3 has to be the ONLY reason to NOT go back to Pre-CU.  I bet they will release classic servers after the PS3 version of NGE launches.  This way they can use subscribers money to pay for developing the PS3 game.
SWG is already almost dead.  They won't shut it down until they have the PS3 version ready to launch.

I must respectfully disagree with you. I have never played SWG, but from my extensive reading on the subject the main appeal - pre CU - was the fact that it was a sandbox game. Vanguard is essentially the spiritual successor to EQ - despite Brad McQuaid claiming otherwise. He knows, you know, we all know that the vast majority of former EQ players see Vanguard as EQ Mark II (with steroids). Heck! Read the Vanguard FAQ - it eulogises DIKU based MUD dynamics, which essentially EQ was based on.

Although Vanguard will be seeking to update these concepts and introduce new ones within an essentially DIKU MUD dynamic, Vanguard is not a sandbox type game.

Yes, it may well attract SWG players due to the fact that it is designed to be challenging - by having to think, rather than whack-a-mole grinding (which is not challenging but just masochistic!) - but sandbox it ain't! Thus speaks a former DIKU MUD player and EQ player.

I'm personally going to Vanguard unless some miracle in development occurs with SWG before July 11. I just honestly wish that I knew what this monster was going to turn into when I extended my subscription for a year.

SOE/LA has burned me and many other vets out here. I personally hope each and everybody who was associated with the development of this steaming pile of dogshit they are passing off as a game dies of massively bleeding anal warts.

Fix the game, and maybe I'll change my tune. Until then, they can kiss 100% of my pasty-white hairy ass.

While it use to be no one game took away avid fans from game of course with the onset of nge that changed, while I am happy you found stuff you are looking forward to I tend to look at all you brought out as examples of up and commings and go well maybe a few years from now something else will come along.

While i could go point by point per game you listed every one after i did research on a few bothered me .

Lotr turbine well we know how well they did with d & d online and ac 2

Tablua Rasa got nixed when they announced FPS , maybe some of us just got so tired of same ole same ole for whatever reason at this point in time the genra has gotten to stale for us now?

Actually, VSoH will be nothing like EQ, although they are influenced by it, as all MMO have been.

Vanguard is more like SWG than EQ.

    Here aare a few details:

    • Player Crafting providing 80% of all game items.
    • Harvesting.
    • Player based economy.
    • Player made Items will be on par or better than high end loot Items.
    • AMAZING crafting system.
    • Huge amount of crafting & player interdependance.
    • Player Mounts & Vehicals.
    • Player made and run Cities.
    • Player influance on the world.
    • A persistant world.
    • Some aspects of Entertaining as side options, and talk of adding it in as professions.
    • The ability to change professions at low levels.
    • An amazing amount of character customization.
    • And I could keep going....

I've been following VSoH for some time and it's looking to be a new level of sandbox / adventure gaming. Their goal as they have said is to create a world that SWG could have been.

I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!

    In fact, forget the SWG!!!!

You should know by now that SW fan will always get back to SWG. Not WoW nor GW nor EVE will interest him/her for long. ok?

We have a new friend here!

Just because both people still playing SWG will never leave, this doesn't mean anyone is gonna come back...  Heh, maybe they should slim down on the max group size, maybe cap it at 2?

I’m not only a SW fan, I’m a SW geek.  Sadly, I could never go back to SWG.  The game is dead to me now.  I’d rather get my Star Warsy fix from reading a book now.

I’d also be more inclined to consider this the SWG exiles forum now.  The man had to clamp down on the real SWG forums, try the “join free” button up top.  They’re running a tight ship now.  Well, they’re bailing water anyway.

I saw that...   But what makes you think that the crafting in Roma Victor is going to be more complex than the one in SWG.  I see that there's will be a lot that will be craftable in RV, but quantity doesn't necesaryly mean quality.

This is not a flame, I'm genuienly interested.

IMO all the Sci-fi MMO's are in trouble once Infinity hits shelves if it continues to impress the way it is in early development.

All I gotta say is if they keep it up at their current rate of development Infinity is going to blow the socks off the sci-fi MMO market.

Star Trek will be the final nail. That is unless we get a big announcement at e3.

Even then, SWG will die. Shortly after they figure out the PS3 sales figures suck.

I could have sworn I said it's "Infinity"  It's on the game list :)  Go look it up.  They're in very early development but I love the concept they're going with.  Think of "ELITE" (the old school open-ended space opera) but in MMO format with conquerable worlds, etc.

Dunno... I have yet to see a decent Star Trek game hit shelves.  I'm very concerned that STO is not going to be any different.  Just another mediocre game with the name Star Trek tacked on.

I hope I'm wrong.  But history doesn't bode well for the title.  Star Trek has just never translated well to gaming.

Vets who played before CU...when the game was realy fun, will probably never come back.CU wasnt that bad after 1 month of fixes, but NGE is a SOE atempt to make a cheap copy WoW,ex:crafters arent and entertainers arent important anymore after NGE,all good items are from looting.

In many ways Vanguard is more like a smashing of FFXI into a persistent world (I honestly think they won't pull a persisten world off) with some player made content akin to EvE. After seeing an over hype thread in Vanguard forums I been poking around and I don't think I will preorder it.

On RV as far as crafting. Well for one thing you listed the entire skill list, not just crafting. The other thing is be have no real details on the crafting, but you can be prepared to have it run by ppl with lots of real life cash and those not buying currency to not be able to be a top crafter. Which is sad because crafting and dedication are about the only things that a game design like RV offers over other games out now.
