""Open World PvP" is an amalgamation of two separate thoughts: "open world" and "PvP."
An open world in a game is a game space in which players are not limited to a set path. They are free to explore the edges of the map in any order they choose, generally speaking. The map is generally on the larger side, but not every one needs to be massive like in WoW.
PvP is obviously "Player vs Player." That encompasses anything where two players compete with one another within the mechanics of the game. This colloquiallly applies primarily to RTS, RPG, and FPS games, but really it can apply to anything.
So "open world PvP" is really just any game that satisfies those two conditions."
"'Open World' is of course anything that takes place in the open world - ie: you don't need to load into an instance, it's part of the rest of the game world and take place anywhere within it.
By definition then, Open World PVP is PVP that takes place within the world itself rather than shut away in an instance. If you can PVP in the persistent world, and others can witness/see it while going about their business then it's open world. I did a quick Google and found a similar definition of it on"
"Combat can occur between players in a non-instanced fashion anywhere in the game world where permitted by the server ruleset. Virtually all Open World PvP games place some limit on where and/or when this type of PvP can occur. This is typically done by zone, area, or character level. Regardless of restriction, if this type of combat can occur, it is considered Open World PvP."
I'm sure I can sit here and continue to come up with supporting definition after support definition for hours, and hours and hours.
So you quoted sources from the forums of 3 titles that many would consider not open world pvp?

Cant Understand Normal Thinking...
Yes I am working with everything god gave me. And given I'm considered to be a borderline genius how normal people can think some of the things they do is confounding to me sometimes. Most people are gullible, susceptible to manipulation, highly illogical and lack critical thinking skills.
Have fun thinking normally.
explains why you think that Ettenmoors is Borderline Open World ... Notice you arent manipulating anyone here, Noone here is gullible enough to believe Ettenmmors is OWPVP ....
You are very much alone , but thats the life of a erhmmm Borderline Genius , hanging out on a gaming forum arguing with a community he describes as stupid ,dumb, fools ... If that is somehow a biased search term please enlighten me as to how and explain to me what a better one would be.
Check the order of results. All 3 of my results are found on the first page. The top one, is the top result. Go ahead and hunt through results that support your definition. They're by far in the minority, and generally put forth by the least articulate posters.

Neither of us is going to convince the other.
Nor does it matter that we won't, as there is nothing to be won.

The days of paying a monthly fee to be on a open pvp game and being pk'd are over. Example Eve's player base is slowly dieing.
This is a logically weak arguement. If EVE is dying it is largely because it is a spreadsheet in space that many people just find boring or have had enough of. I liked many parts of the game but ya, the gameplay just doesn't hold up 10 years later.
Sorry but you are just clearly not a pvp player, and your argument has no basis in reality for pvp fans.

EVE was a "spreadsheet in space" since the beginning, yet it was steadily growing subscriber base for 10 years.
Your argument is equally fallacious - projection of your bias.

Eh... of course my post contained an opinion, one thats been expressed on this site and elsewhere many times. Not everyone thinks that way, but to say that "EVE is dying therefore subscription based pvp games are dead" is rediculous.
I think Dvora's argument has a higher probability of truth.
People didn't just wake up one day and say "WHAT?! THERE IS PVP IN EVE?!" and there is no evidence to suggest that PvP is becoming a less popular model over time. If anything, the amount of people willing to pay money into kickstarters for PvP MMOs suggests the exact opposite.
The spreadsheets in space aspect is largely an aspect born of the technical limitations of the time when EVE was released in 2003 (Planetside, ORIGINAL Call of Duty, Warcraft III, Deus Ex: Invisible War, and Freelancer came out the same year) I think a game born of these technical limitations was seen as more acceptable.
As time has gone on technical capabilities allow for more and more interesting combat systems to be implemented with lesser drawbacks.
Stale combat systems do seem to be something diminishing in popularity.
That gives Dvora's theory a lot more weight.
I'd still repeat the question though:
"Can you name any western MMOs with a playerbase that is currently growing?"
Others disagree and its once again one of those terms with no official source to establish a definition.
All comes down to what players want to believe.
If this is the case, then it' a pointless term, since it's meaning and application are purely a matter of personal interpretation there is no way to use the term viably in a discussion, as it can mean any number of things to any number of people. as such it's better to use more accurate terms, and disregard anyone that tries to use the term OWVP, as quite literally, no one would have any real idea a what they were actually referring to.
Your saying nothing about nothing
'm sorry I sued too many word for you.. Let me make it simple: If it can mean any old damn thing someone wants it to mean.. what the hell good is it?
It isn't which is why we should go by the general definition that consistently pops up in all the top results of an unbiased search of "Define Open World PvP" over counting agrees on a forum renowned throughout the gaming community for it's ignorance and toxicity.
Well, the General definition, and ONLY way I have ever hard it used, was to mean the game world was Open PVP. since it can mean that, or to people like you, it can mean one little spot off in the corner has PvP.. it's not a term we can use and have a meaningful discussion about PvP.. hell you can't even have a meaningful discussion about the meaning of the phrase without throwing out insults.

The discussion was going quite civil until you came in and asserted I was fudging definitions. If you read back through the discussion you can see my tone was not at all aggressive until that point.
Don't expect me to remain civil if you get aggressive with me. Especially not when you have behaved in a generally trollish manner across all the topics I've ever had the misfortune to interact with you.

@Elsabolts - Can you name any western MMOs with a playerbase that is currently growing?
Dungeons and Dragons Online, is currently growing in population again.
Like a temporary upswing in population or sustained growth over time? And do you have any kind of data to verify that?
You asked for a currently growing western MMO, DDO is currently growing... dafkq really.. do I look like I want to have a 16 page bullshit debate with you about this?
Edit:
That was a rhetorical question and the answer is No.

Not really blowing it up, to be honest Source and while there is a slight (being very loose with my terms here) upward trend, I would not say it is growing, as it is nowhere near its peak players. Of course, this is just the steam chart so it may be a little behind.
On a side note, it's a bit hard to take you seriously when you present exactly zero evidence to back up your claims. I remember another thread where you claimed to have been to college, so you know better than to throw opinions around as fact without actual facts to back them up. Assuming, of course, you are being honest about your education.
Just saying.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.
In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

Didn't they just announce new content (could have been NW I get their ads confused a lot)? They did release new content not long ago. Every MMO sees an up tick when that happens. I wouldn't call that growth, just people checking back in for the new content.

Actually DDO jut got transferred to Daybreak, and is now developed by Standing Stone as opposed to Turbine, so they have seen a spike in players as of late, but the cause of the up-tick is not relevant, only that there is current growth.. which is all that was asked for.

and no.. I'm not in the mood to deal with whatever you want to bicker about.
I did not find it necessary to specify that I wasn't talking about temporary population spikes due to patches.
We are discussing EVE being in slow decline but EVE's decline is filled with many many upswings as well, but is following on overall pattern of gradual decline.
So it's overall longterm trends we are discussing not brief spikes.
I figured a community of "experts" would be able to figure it out.
