Path of Exile is a game I’ve had the chance to get quite familiar with over my years writing for MMORPG. I’ve watched it grow into the impressive and expansive title it is today. But if its latest expansion, The Fall of Oriath is any indicator, we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg so far.

That hasn't changed I assume? (I remember there was partial respec available at one point where you could take back the last few points you've spent, but that just isn't the same).
Like I said, I know I'm in the minority because people want to feel their "choices matter" but who are we kidding, I'm not as young as I used to be and I don't have as much time to devote to "grinding" levels out to find out I hate the play style that I've ended up picking and let's face it, everyone just ends up looking a build up online to see if they like it and then ends up copying it anyway.
Personally I think I would have so much more fun with the game if I could try out different specs as often as I like without having to re level up again. Yes of course there will still be min maxing but at least it lets you get into the fun much quicker instead of having to "stick with it".
I know I ended up playing Diablo 3 alot longer because there was basically no limits to your specs and your spec would change due to getting a new drop that changed your entire play style (without needing to slog through and get back to 70. Yes I know getting a powerlevel to 70 is trivial, but the point is you shouldn't need to do that)
You get respec points and there's always ->Orb of regret<- They may come out as expensive in the start, but you'll have heaps of them when you reach endgame, can easily go back 30 points if you wish and spec something else.
Really, I must have missed that change gonna load it up today...Thanks! @ozmodan Update, not sure what you are playing but I just loaded the game and all the classes are still Gender locked..
This is false. All classes are gender locked, and has always been so. They could not afford two genders of each class (animations, voice acting, clipping issues) back when they lived in a garage, and since then it is hard to prioritize it over adding more content. Making new char models will perhaps bring in a handful of new players, but it is super expencive and more content almost certainly brings in even more new players.
Also as @Nyctelios said each patch they give you free resets.
True at the beginning of a new league Orbs are a bit more expensive, but then again if you can't afford them I can see only 2 options:
1st. You are too low level. If you continue for a while and once you get into maps you should be able to save up fairly fast or you can just re-roll since you are low level anyway.
2nd. Your build can't clear even normal maps, but it's really hard to make such a bad build imo. Usually with that type of build it would be hard to get to level 60-70.
Generally if you don't know what to do it's always a good idea to pick a budget noob-friendly build, so that you can get some currency and after that you can use that currency to make whatever build you want.
PoE have so many builds(probably in the thousands by now) that it can be overwhelming to people who are new or have just casually played it for a bit.
Anytime there's a major change to the passive power tree, you get a full respec. I have the maximum number of characters, and half of them are sitting on respecs, while I play other alts and leagues.
Lots of theory-crafting sites to help you spec out an advancement path if you so wish.
I enjoy the game, so don't mind the run from the start. The Lore, Background, character voicing, etc., are better than quite a few MMOs I've played.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
