SMITE has gone MMO(ish)! In their newest Adventure, Trials of King Hercules, three players will co-op their way through NPC bosses because good ol' Herc told you to. It's up to TheHiveLeader to now make his way through these trials and hopefully live in the process.

What do you think?

Wow, I was actually interested in starting Smite for this until I learned that this was a limited time event.

.........................why would someone make a gear grind progression game a limited time event? That makes no sense :O

Overwatch PVE events are also limited time. I think they are trying to follow the trend - even if people are asking to remove the time limitation and let it be a fixed game mode.
Do Overwatch PvE events also have gear grind vertical progression?

Anything limited time event related in multiplayer arena type games tend to be there just to scare people into coming back for the length of time of the event just because it's timed. It will work. I know people who will freak out thinking they will miss some special event all the time in games.

Have you ever been scared back to a game because of this?  Or are you immune but others are scared into it?

Worded it wrong. But meh too lazy to fix it. I meant scared to miss an event that may never come back due to rewards or something.

why the heck shouldn't they do this?  Player who are playing get to get in on a one time event.  So those who are active players get can get something if they want to try for it.  As to people who aren't playing it.  Who cares about them?

If you were interested enough in the game, wouldn't you be playing it?  Or are there other priorities over this game?  Is this simple fear of missing out in which case, stop doing that.  Or do you feel entitled to it all?

So those who are active players get can get something if they want to try for it.
That's the thing.  What do you actually GET from it, I mean?  The vertical gear progression only applies to this mode, right?  So you can get the best gear in the game, then the mode goes away, and so does that best gear that you grinded for.

Do they like, give out a special skin to those who defeat the final boss or something as a reward for beating it then?  Though like Hive Leader I was interested because of the MMORPG progression, not because of skins, so if that's indeed the case, it's not for me then, I suppose.

    Nyctelios said:
They have limited time skins and stuffs. So if you want them you have to grind them (because RNG loot boxes). At least it was like that for a while. I'm not aware if they changed it in the last ones.
That's not vertical gear progression, though.  The gear you get from this mode doesn't transfer to other modes, right?  (that'd be hilariously unbalanced if it did, though).  So you grind out this mode for gear that goes away, basically.  (again, unless you get a skin or something else that can be used in other modes as a reward, but in that case that's just more of the same and not what I or Hive Leader would be looking for).

Well, I don't know what you expect since there is no gear on Smite besides the items you buy within each and every match (like most other mobas do).

Do you what you get from playing it?

Sit down, this concept will blow your mind:

You have fun playing something you like.
I don't expect anything from the base game besides what it already is.  That's why I'm not interested in it because it's not my cup of tea.

I do expect persistent progression RPG gameplay from this new sub game Hercules Trials they have for it because that IS my cup of tea.  Which is why I'm interested in that.

However, the latter is apparently just a limited time existence.  Hence "I would have been interested in this game, but now I'm not, because it isn't even going to exist anymore."

Why do people think I'm supposed to be interested in the rest of the game?  If I was interested in the rest of the game, I would, as you all keep saying, "Be playing it."  Instead, I'm interested in THIS Hercules Trials game, which is practically a completely different thing.  But this Hercules Trials game is only going to be a limited existance.  So there goes that interest.

This really shouldn't be that hard to understand.  Sheesh.  You all keep getting so defensive and white knighting about me attacking your Smite base game apparently when all I'm saying is I'm interested in this OTHER game mode, because it appeals to my interests, but it's limited time only so there it goes.  Stop letting all your bias make you think I'm saying something that I'm not.

For crying out loud, I'm basically just repeating what the Hive Leader said about how he wished there was an actual game like Hercules Trials and suddenly you all think I'm blasting the MOBA genre, apparently.  Are you that insecure about the MOBA genre that you feel you need to leap to defend it just because someone said they wished the RPG game mode in Smite was more permanent?

You all were the ones attacking first via passive aggression so I offer no apologies.  And I don't consider it a nice discussion when you completely misinterpreted what I was saying and got so defensive in the first place.

I was interested in the PVE part too and would probably play this game finally after years of it sitting in my Steam library if that mode was permanent.

Not sure why they don't make this a regular game mode and add onto it over time.

Obligatory "Nothing MMO/MMORPG about it!", progression != mmo, 3 players == co-op. That'll be all, thanks for listening!

That was actually kinda addressed in Hive Leader's video.  He said he wished they'd turn it into a full MMORPG, not that it WAS a full MMORPG.

Wishing something became an MMORPG is probably actually technically on topic, I think.

I find it a fun new challenge, especially since it's quick gameplay for small 3-player groups. Yes, it's got progression, but it's only for this event. Since getting a full set of good gear is relatively easy to do, I think people are playing more because they enjoy it than for any grind to some cap/item.

Last Blizzcon at HoTS panel someone asked devs if they ever considered adding PvE elements to the game. I'd consider this as a nudge and as upcoming MxM also has PvE if it pans out well I won't be surprised to see this happen in other games as well.

Games like MXM are challenging these older mobas to expand their game modes.
Talking about games where thousands of players exist simultaneously in a single instance and mechanics related to such games.
