E3 has come and gone and in the wake of the incredible hype machine that is back to back publisher conferences, the biggest game reveals are clear: EA Bioware’s Anthem and Activision Blizzard’s, Destiny 2. It's early and we really won't know anything until these things release, but my personal hype meter favors Anthem. I played Destiny like crazy from launch through Dark Below, but called it quits prior to House of Wolves because it just became so stale. I loved the strikes and raids for a good while, until they became...stale. There were just no social options at all, and from what I've seen thus far (again, this is early) I don't see much of that being added for D2. In fact, with the Tower being destroyed, the pessimist in me can actually foresee social things (chat, real reasons for a clan/guild, a decent group finder, some other reason to visit the "social hub" beyond dancing on top of buildings) being worse this time around.

I agree with this write-up: D2 almost seems more like Destiny 1.5, at least from the info we have now. What, indeed, happened to having a (more) open world and expanded social options in a game so dependent upon multiplayer activity? I'm not saying I'm not excited for it or that I won't play it - I almost certainly will, at some point - but did Activision pay attention at all to the massive volumes of feedback many of us gave while we played Destiny? More reasons to explore other than the same old tired dailies, more reasons to have friends in-game, strikes that were more than simply an old strike run backwards...I am not a game developer, but how difficult would it have been to implement things like that?

Anyhow, I am definitely ready for Anthem. It looks absolutely beautiful, and yes, it does actually appear to have some RPG elements that will flesh it out beyond what D2 will be. Looks like there will be some variety in those exosuits, which (hopefully) will encourage experimentation and allow us to tinker. I know Bioware has taken their share of flak in recent times, but when they put their heads together they do make some good games. I went into MEA with low expectations and wound up loving it, so I'd go into Anthem looking for a good time.

I think out of those two, Destiny 2 is the safer bet. They aren't making any major changes to what was already a good game, so it's hard to see how they could end up creating anything other than a very good game.

Anthem is a project that could be a big success, but they're also trying so much that they've got plenty of chance to fail and create a flop.

I plan to play Destiny 2 immediately on release, but for Anthem wait for reviews before making any decision to to purchase.

If anthem is true open world it will be better imo. Also destiny seems a little too simple to me, so character progression could easily be improved upon and anthem could do this too.

EA cannot make a game that does not have 20 DLC expansions, a money grabbing pit of crap. My money is on D2 - Yes I know D1 had DLC's etc. but it was less of a money sink, and I do not think EA knows how to make a game without micro transactions that gouge their players.

Competition is good! I am honestly looking forward to both games. I cant wait for September 6th to get a hold of the new Destiny! I am REALLY looking forward to Anthem too. Especially if the "dungeons" end up being procedural generated like they have hinted at.

Tbh will try both, but have this deep feeling Destiny won't be anything more than a big update.

The comment "Destiny 2, in most respects, is a whole lot closer to Destiny 1.5 instead of a true sequel" never rang truer. When a game normally gets a squeal it has drastic changes and improvements, unless the previous model was smash hit, but tbh Destiny did well, but not as well as it was hyped up to be.

Think the fans who are with it now will play it, but those who came and left probably won't be back unless the game offers more than it did with Destiny 1.

Anthem looks interesting and might be my answer since Destiny didn't do it for me, game-play trailer looked amazing, but we all know they don't mean much these days. Also I thnk if this game does everything Destiny didn't do and Destiny 2 is nothing new, I could defo see people moving over

If you miss Firefall, Em-8er will fill its void.. if/when it comes out. Hopefully since their Indiegogo is doing really well, it will be a stronger possibility.

OP, you make a lot of assumptions about Bioware and story. Bioware may have been king of story and deep characters, but their last two releases say otherwise. For me, story and character have taken a back seat to world building, open worlds, and combat.

I have zero interest in another shooter as they are a dime a dozen.

Even if these games were otherwise identical, Anthem would still be far superior for its third person view.

Anthem will be far superior unless they just REALLY shit the bed on gameplay.

If both are buy to play and given the rate players go through PvE content, I'd say it's a fairly safe bet that most people (those that are interested in these types of games) will probably get both. Why wouldn't you if they're coming out a year apart?

    DMKano said:

In terms of playerbase Destiny2 will be far bigger and more profitable game.

Destiny1 despite all the shortcomings sold amazingly well - it sold over 6mil units in the firsr month and peaked at 20mil players in the first year, surpassing WoW.

Also keep in mind that Destiny2 is being advertised on Blizzards launcher which has a massive usage.

Sorry but Anthem doesnt stand much chance in the long run.

First off, comparing Destiny to WoW makes no sense at all. One is a FPS game and the other is a subscription based MMORPG, chalk and cheese. Better to compare Destiny to BF, CoD, Halo or The Division, as they both have a persistant world. Apart from that it has nothing in common with MMO's. It's a co-op, persistant shooter.

Secondly Anthem will be advertised via the Origin launcher, which also has massive usage. I'd say they both have a good chance of selling multiple millions of copies.

For me its easy to choose. After shady marketing with Sony, I wont touch Destiny 2 with a stick. While I dont know much about Anthem, I will give it a chance.

I don't really look at it as being a battle considering one is at least a year away, there is nothing that says you cannot do both when that kind of timeframe is involved.

That's what I plan to do as I will get at least a year out of Destiny 2 before Anthem comes out and by that time I will more than likely be looking for a break from Destiny 2 and thats when I can jump into Anthem.

Personally i don't know anyone who plays a single game for a year anymore. We all jump from game to game. 6 months is about the maximum if its a great game. We will all try both like a lot of other people i suspect.

I have to agree with the above posters.  I can't see the point of trying to make it a competition between these games; There's a year between releases, play both.

Bioware's disappointed me on the last 6 titles in a row, so I'll be putting my money on Destiny 2 being the likely better game. After all, we're in the age of rush to launch for maximum profit least effort corporatization, so Destiny 2 should be slightly more polished and improve upon the first's mistakes. It won't be till Destiny 3 or 4 though till it's actually a good game.

I will be playing both these games and the destiny series for the for the first time when it comes to PC, but my money's on Warframe. From what I can tell Warframe is going to be a direct competitor of both these games and one already well established and growing. They seem very similar design and theme, at least from the outside.

While they are very different types of games with different business model, they have the same core gameplay.

Bungie made Destiny. Blizzard made WoW. Both companies are under Activision so they share ideas between their games.

It is extremely evident that Bungie took the WoW "threadmill" mechanics to create Destiny. Everything you do in Destiny is a WoW mechanic translated into a First Person Shooter.

Well yes, to a degree you're right but at it's core Destiny is a shooter and WoW is a sword and board RPG, which traditionally appeals to a different market. They may share RPG elements but the core gameplay is quite different. Over here we have the FPS core game and over there is a traditional, tab targetted, RNG based RPG.

Obviously there will be some overlap with players that enjoy both but the FPS market has always been bigger than the traditional MMORPG market. Note I say traditional MMORPG, not the new "MMO" market that includes LoL, DOTA and all those other games that aren't "proper" MMO's. Because WoW is a traditional MMORPG like EQ, DAOC etc.

When EQ was at it's height with 500k subs Half life had sold 8 million copies. HL2 sold over 12 million. CoD Modern warfare sold 18 million while the sequels sold 27 million each. Today we have Overwatch with over 30 million sales. It was a pretty safe bet that Destiny would sell extremely well because it's FPS play is solid and it has the added appeal of the RPG elements to generate interest from a wider audience. Plus the fact that it was riding the coat tails of Halo.

The point I was making was that saying Destiny sold 20 million and surpassed WoW isn't something that should be particularly surprising because there are quite a few FPS games that have surpassed WoW. Or have they?

When DMKano said that 20 million surpassed WoW was he referring to the peak subs of 12 million, or did he mean the total sales of WoW? I'm not sure if anyone even knows how many sales WoW has in total for sure, but according to wikipedia the total number of accounts created over WoW's lifetime is in excess of 100 million. So either way you look at it, that statement is either irrelevant or just wrong.

Don't you think it's a bit early for this discussion, MMORPG.com? We know very little about Anthem outside of the over glorified game demo at E3.

Bioware didn't show real game play and what was shown at E3 was basically a scripted tech demo using the in game engine Bioware will be using. The graphic fidelity will be toned down for all consoles, and probably PC as well. No game mechanics were divulged past flashy scripted events and all we know about Anthem's game play is that Anthem will be kinda sorta like Destiny.

I'm not saying Anthem won't be a good game, I'm saying none of us can possibly know since Anthem is nothing more than a tech demo at this current moment in time. Comparing Anthem to a game that we have a lot of info on, and will be released within a few months time, is completely absurd.

As an avid Destiny player I can tell you that I would plan to play both Anthem and Destiny 2 so there really is no loser in my mind. Maybe there will be stronger elements in one or the other that make me play one a bit more but if they are at all competitive I can see my self playing both just about the same.

When D2 comes out Ill play that. Being an MMO vet burned out on dozens of titles I doubt itll keep me engaged longer than 2-3 months. Maybe 4 if its really good. Then Ill wait for Anthem and play that for a few months. At this point it would take a miracle to keep me playing anything longer.

i'll be playing both. the advantage i see for Anthem is open world. Destiny player since beta and i bet Anthem will be just as fun. yeah fun. don't care about pvp or stats, just hitbox size, trigger response and co-op play. lucky me, think i'm going to be very satisfied with both games. oh, almost forgot - whaaaa whaaaa, blah blah, complain, rant, pessimistic view and blank was better.
