Welcome to Game Gear! This is MMORPG’s new monthly PC tech column where we’ll talk about everything that’s happened in the last month and get into conversations about what matter’s most. I’m Chris, MMORPG’s new Hardware Editor. I’ve been covering games and technology since 2008. I’m excited to be leading the charge on this side of the site and to have an official place to talk about PC gaming tech outside of official reviews.

Everyone knows adding a few rgb lights that add 100% to the price is all worth it.
After all, RGB makes my pc faster. Just look at my memory, since I have bought rgb memory (the same specs as I had before but without rgb) my system benchmarks have gone through the roof. If only they added rgb to SSDs.

"In the case of keyboards and mice, actual function can be programmed into that lighting."
Only if the program (game) supports it. Do you think MSWord can turn your RGB keyboard red when you misspell a word? Does Master of Orion support changing your keyboard's colors to match the respective power levels of the different galactic empires?

I change the color of my keys that hold different functions for different games.

PS4 controllers shift their led under certain circumstances as well. In Destiny the led colors to equal your weapons damage type (in case you forgot what your weapon was), same for some color changes in Borderlands 2. I've also seen color changes when switching accounts (or using games from an other account on your PS4) to show that you've made a change. But honestly, I'd not give a damn about the whole RGB color shifting things for PC or consoles.

This is akin to the whole "lore website/app" idea.  It's a (imo) gimmicky way to try and deliver feedback to the player that's already done in a much better way on screen.  Unless you're sitting in complete darkness, you have to look away from the screen and at your PS4 controller to even tell what color it's glowing.  Same with a keyboard.

In the example of Destiny, the weapon damage type is also displayed on screen near the ammo count.  That already does a much better job of alerting the player than a glow stick on the controller does.

I personally felt the colored LED on PS4 controllers, aside from helping them register for the PS camera, was a waste of space and battery life.

How about timers and macros? Just because a game doesn't have natural interfacing doesn't mean you can't use advanced lighting and programming features to enhance your gameplay.

I have this keyboard - K70 LUX RGB with Brown Cherry MX keys. It is amazing. It's a combination of build quality, key quality, and the supporting software.

The case frame is aluminum with a braided dual USB cord for a passthrough port. It's weighty and sturdy and that feels nice to me because I use my keyboard for a living.

The Brown Cherry MX switches are what work for me. You can get the keyboard in multiple switch configurations. Browns are a great universal switch in my opinion. The keys are quieter in this than the browns in the G610 I use at work.

The QUE software is powerful. You can set lighting effects based on events and input. It's not just RGB that's is available, but programmability along with that. You can use colors to provide user feedback.

I have a default color scheme I use to program and write code with. I have different groups of keys highlighted to find them easier.

When I logged into D3 a new keyboard layout is loaded. The keyboard switches to all red except the important keys to the game which are colored a soft gray-white to stand out. When my skills are on cooldown the keys are grayed out. When I don't have enough resource to cast the skill it's grayed out. When an aoe event happens The keyboard does a soft white splash effect to let me know the character got hit. That's pretty amazing.

I also have a Corsair mouse. I have it switch sidelight color based on what profile is loaded. That lets me know how my mouse buttons are programmed.

So yeah, you can trick out your rig to be all flashy if that's all you want, but for keyboard and mouse it's a powerful tool if you want it to be.

100% this. I have the same keyboard. It's a great tool, even outside of gaming. I truly believe a lot of the skepticism of people for the potential of programmable lighting has to do with never actually exploring it themselves. Or simply not having an open mind.

I'm writing on that same keyboard right now actually :-)

Personally like lighted keyboards so I can see the keys at night to type.  Changing colors for specific game keys is laughable, who has the time to look at the keyboard when playing a game?   Give me a lit cherry-mx keyboard and that is all I ever need, everything else is just a wasted expense of money.

I only read the "hardware reviews" on this site for the entertainment value. Trying to argue lighting on a keyboard provides some sort of tactical advantage only to those with "open minds" is indeed very entertaining. This thread has made me go watch reruns of Cheech and Chong.
I'm pretty sure Torval was joking.
"Highlighting keys to find them easier"... it has to be a joke.

When I evolve into a creature with the ability to see through my hands to see the color of the rgb lights, then I'll worry about it.  Until then, I won't consider it a feature, and a gimmicky non-feature at best.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
