Gaming Expectations 10 Years ago

Here are some of the features that 10 years ago where considered fairly aggressive and innovative and many said would be hard to do and yet today they are very common place.

1. Day Night Cycle
2. Weather
3. Roaming mobs (as in they can roam the world and do not have a set spawn point)
4. Building structures
5. Terraforming
6. Fully Destructible enviroment
7. Planetary Landings
8. Space Ship you can walk around in while flying

Those are the ones I can think of at the moment anyway.

Game innovation and technology is moving at lightspeed or because I am older time is moving faster

@SEANMCAD, what games have 3. Roaming Mobs.  I don't pay attention that closely so I often miss stuff like this.  I think I heard of a MMO in that Mob distribution is controlled by predation by players and other mobs, but I can't remember the title or if it is in production or just discussion.

Something I think should be added to the list is "AI Director" as seen in the Left 4 Dead series. "This is to monitor and alter the game play experience in response to the players' actions."

    Pardon any spelling errors
Konfess your cyns and some maybe forgiven
Boy: Why can't I talk to Him?
Mom: We don't talk to Priests.
As if it could exist, without being payed for.
F2P means you get what you paid for. Pay nothing, get nothing.
    Even telemarketers wouldn't think that.
It costs money to play.  Therefore P2W.

this is a general gaming observation, not MMO specifically.

Answer for games I am aware of:
    7 Days to Die
    SubNautica
    The Forest
    Wurm (MMO Here)
    Empyrion Galactic survival
    Kenshi
    Rising World
    Medieval Engineers
    Out of Reach
    Ark
    Osiris: New Dawn
    Stranded Deep

and to be clear, yes...from a development stand point a roaming elephant and a roaming Orc is the same technical problem

    EDIT: (forgot a few)
Life is Feudal (which is also an upcoming MMO)
    Kingdoms

All I remember about gaming 10 years ago was a lot of grinding.  Can't recall roaming mobs from ten years ago but Aion had/has roaming high level mobs in lower areas that you had to watch out for while grinding or you got killed, quick, fast, and in a hurry.  There are a lot of other games that had them but I really remember them from that game.  Players could work together to take them out but they were on short respawn timers.

I recall Darkfall mentioning that they were working on roaming mobs and the internets went crazy with excitement and saying its a really hard task.

These days pretty much every game I play personally has roamers now

I know a lot of games like ESO have roamers that basically walk back and forth for short distances.  I was thinking of roamers that took long paths that were easy to forget they were there because it took them maybe three to five mins to complete a path.

these games have full world roaming as you would expect 7 Days to Die, SubNautica, The Forest, Wurm (MMO Here), Empyrion Galactic survival, Kenshi ,Rising World, Medieval Engineers, Out of Reach, Ark, Osiris: New Dawn, Stranded Deep, Life is Feudal (which is also an upcoming MMO), Kingdoms

I don't think I've ever encountered an MMO with a fully destructible environment, unless you're including things like minecraft?
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

to be clear again this post is in General because I wanted it to be about games in general not specifically MMOs and my OP doesnt have MMO in the title.

MMOs are so far behind in my view its not really worth even talking about anymore

    Ah, sorry, that's reasonable.
