All of their games outside of Pillars of Eternity series were contracts for publishers. They didn't even get a bonus despite how well Fallout New Vegas sold (their only real best seller).

When they did Pillars of Eternity KS they were a few months away of closing the studio, their last contract having been cancelled and having nothing more in the pipeline.

Going back to KS for the second game was more allowing the fans to participate and using FIG to find potential future investors. Deadfire base budget, without the KS money, was already double the one of the first game.

Yeah, one of the first things they said with the FIG campaign is that Deadfire is going to get made even if they received $0 crowd funding. They used it as a way to improve on the systems in the game. They used the extra funding as a way to buy more time.

The first game is, by far, one of my favorite games over the past 10 years. So I can't wait for this one.
