Well, if true, that's really disappointing.
What really matters is the impact of wearing gear. If a small group of under geared or even naked players can take down a fully geared one, we've seen in the past how that will likely go.
Alt accounts with good standing have often supplied those with bad karma, one way around it would be to limit trading by players with bad karma to only other players with similar bad standing.
Thing is, over the years we've seen players work around the best efforts Devs have tried in open world PVP games, I'll be surprised if this team can really pull it off

Many have tried to implement "PVP with consequences", but inevitably the consequences are either weak sauce or else the players find work-arounds.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
IMO most devs don't see the big picture when trying to recreate realism.
Obviously in the real wild west, every minute your life may be in danger ,however there would be vigilantes,Marshall's,Judges etc etc, there was likely some form of recourse and dead was dead,no coming back.
My point is that it is a game and it is NOT nor will it ever recreate realism unless your going to actually die for good,so even death is FAKE in gaming.Point being, since your not even treating death as such, then obviously you can and should bend all the other rules as well.
This is why we need penalties and some form of repercussion towards ideals we don't really want.
IMO the real truth behind devs always going for open pvp is their games do not have enough content to survive without it.So if players can't go around shooting each other, they will get bored. It really says that developers should put more work/effort into their games to keep players interested long term.

I'm just going to follow his advice to hold off buying until some time post release, which is my standard practice these days.

Definitely not one of those games you take a chance on pre-purchase.
