Hi guys,
I just realized something recently, when I play games that are somewhat mindless . . .like most games i'm playing. I figured it is time to do something beneficial while I am doing it.
I was playing Path of Exile on HC server, on my 4th iteration of my 1 character i'm building (56, 72, 56 were my prior deaths). When I am leveling or grinding, it is pretty mindless. If I am changing my gear or battling a tough boss it is not.
So I decided to listen to podcasts while I play, that way I can be somewhat productive while playing games. I decided to listen to some professional podcasts relating to my work to improve my knowledge base, I also listen to other podcasts, and will perhaps start language teaching podcasts. Thus, i don't feel bad playing games and "wasting time". I know people don't look at games as wastes of time, but in my life, it is a waste of time. Therefore, now, I feel better while playing. I think it is because I have massive ADHD that I prefer to play games and then since it is mindless, I can focus on the podcast.
So what do you do while playing? I am assuming most listen to music as you prefer to relax 100% unlike me.

I breathe...
When I play games, they receive my full and undivided attention. There will be no radio, TV or music to distract me. In RPG games like Fallout or Witcher, I turn the game music off, so that I can hear the environment sounds more clearly.
If a game cannot hold my full and undivided attention, it is quickly uninstalled...
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
So I have delved into the PvP MMO / MOBA called the Stock Market.
Research classes and make builds. Start small to grind some coin. Combat is on a timer and pretty automated. Player Driven economy, though as usual the biggest guilds can manipulate the auction house.
If I want to spend an entire Saturday playing games I do. If I want to do other things then I do them and leave gaming behind.

Some of my friends have that attitude in that "any time I'm playing a video game I could be doing anything else: working on my musical, practicing my classical guitar, going to the gym, taking tango lessons, hiking, learning a new language, learning a new instrument, etc, etc"
But that's because they don't see the value in "enjoyment for the sake of it". Or at least enjoying video games. They enjoy themselves but think video games are for kids.
Enjoying one's self gets rid of stress and puts one in a better mood.
So if you really think playing video games is a waste of time then STOP right now! Seriously, stop! You are wasting your life.
And get to actually doing things that you feel have value.
Now, if I "just" played video games over the things I listed above then "yes" I would reevaluate. But as long as I keep my life balanced and anchored to making it as stress free and enjoyable as possible while still keeping an eye on my goals, then I feel good about how I spend my time.

I have to say though, I also just had surgery a couple weeks ago so I'm spending alot of time sleeping right now. Thinking about doing that at the moment. Maybe go watch star trek once hubby gets home, try to eat something, and rest on the couch.

OT, when I play games I play games, especially on console. Only in the case of MMORPGs where there is quite some downtime do I browse the web a bit while waiting on a group or travelling. I am not a Youtube/Twitch person and music always gets my undivided attention so no playing that in the background.

'But there are many. You can play them entirely solo, and even offline. Also, you are wrong by default.'
Ikcin in response to yours sincerely debating whether or not single-player offline MMOs exist...
'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'

There are days where the game is in the background and I am pretty much AFK and I am doing everything else. Though currently I am looking for a new MMO to play as I just left my previous one.
So I can say that I am mostly catching up on games I bought on steam, but did not play until now due to how much time MMOs take the player.
@Robokapp
*throws half of the power nine into play and casts some weird combination which wins on turn 1*... jk.. nice to see another MTG player in these boards
I am patiently waiting for the next MMO that can capture ALL of my attention once again. Might be a while.

If I'm playing an MMO (I haven't for years) then I'll be on voice chat so no time for anything else but the game and chatting.
If I'm playing something that requires high concentration, then that's all I'll be doing. I used to listen to a lot of music, but very few games require concentration any more and those that do tend to have audio cues that I need to pay attention to (like procs in an action combat game, or engine noises in a racing game).
For everything else, which is the majority of my gaming time, I will just binge watch TV shows. I try to pick stuff that I already know so that it doesn't matter if I miss 10 minutes of it. This is perfect for games like Cities: Skylines, or Total War, as there are long periods of time where you are just waiting for stuff to happen.
In short, stop being a damn troll. You are not as smart and certainly not as witty as you think you are.
As to OP, I usually just focus on the game I am playing, if it can not hold my attention, then I move along to something that does.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.
In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.
