Huxley, Vanguard, Age of Conan, ST Online all have been mentioned multiple times on this thread. But to be honest, in the years of watching the industry, Each of these titles will get a following but I doubt any of them will hold a player base that is concidered to be large.
Huxley- looks awsome, sounds great but in the end is a FFS online, while PS did well, it didn't break any records.
Vanguard- biggest complaints in todays MMO's are finding themselves in this title, sure read the FAQ, it reaks of EQ being some of the devs are the founding members, People want new and inovative, not new and revamped.
Age Of Conan - Concept awsome but theme? I think in the end the Theme will kill this game, while it will have a following, I know to many that said "eh, conan theme?" that was a turn-off instantly. Can't say what will become of it. Not to mention pvp, but it does seem from what players want and what the industry is heading towards is a pvp enviorment. Agreed I am with this, just because like many I played many games, pvp made games last for me, if it wasn't for that, I would have left long ago.
What will honestly make a MMO stand out among the rest is inovation and new ideas, my personal pick is Pirates of the Burning Sea, why? because it's unique to it's own. Based on sea warfare, this game is something new and fresh. While not followed by many , it is my honest belief that word of mouth will make this game take off. While one has to like "ship to ship combat" I beleive the versitility this game will have makes it very viable for the coming year.
Now if we are talking down the road, say in 2 years or so. My votes goto Warhammer online, just because the following of the series be it the boardgames, minitures and or computer games has always faired well. In it's own, Warhammer has had it's original game mechanics followed by no one. It wasn't made from guides from Dungeons and Dragons , it didn't follow any previous game, it is .. orignal. The online concept if very fun to think of if you know the series. For those that don't , (if this goes the way I think it will) will see the concepts and love them. Warhammer is roleplaying, intense combat and well pure chaos sometimes while in others it can be a pure role-playing experaince. With the experiance Mythic has in making an MMO I see this one going really far.
My other choice for down the road in 2 years or so, StarTrek Online. Why? because as starwars the name alone will bring this game alive. Will the gamplay keep it afloat? only time will tell, but it will sell big in the first few months, no doubt about it.
Last, LOTR I think will bust, there are fans of the movies but there is no true historical fan base as you find in startrek , starwars etc. This game has nothing inovative and it's relying purly on the license to make it float. There will be players, dont take me wrong here, but it won't be even compairable to some of the more main stream morphs of today. A license can only carry you so far, the mechanics is what keeps people playing and others joining.

Originally posted by Tinybina I think Age of Conan will be the next big thing.. There going after the mature crowd in this one, which will alow them to have a more realistic environment. Also I believe Funcom learned there lesson from Anarchy Onlines launch, AO's launch was horrible but the expansion after launched pretty smoothed compared to other MMORPG's expansion. Plus AO turned out to be a real indepth game which I believe AOC will be as well.
1. i agree with you and 2. wth did you get that signature, that's mine (and it's spelled "an idiot" not "a idiot")

I read the article here about the Historical MMO genre and I've been discussing concepts for historical games for a while with some of my friends and fellow MMO players for a while. I would love to see an American Revolution game. 13 colonies. Something like that. It would be awesome. You could have 4 factions. the Red coats the militias, Nuetral and the American Military. There would be lots of room for crafting classes, medics, blacksmith, ship building, espionage, infantry classes and Naval classes. Perfect PVP setup. Perfect to incorporate both action and RPG elements and enough nonfiction content to draw from.
As I write this I am looking out my front window at Chelsea Creek the point where the Red Coats invaded from, Slades Mill it's called. If i look over to my right a bit I can see Bunker Hill and the USS Constitution, still commissioned and parked in Boston Harbor with its glorious flags waving in the cold wind. I can imagine how awesome it would be to recreate the battle of Bunker Hill in an MMO game. Or a naval battle in Boston Harbor. How about being one of the men on General Washington's boat crossing the Delaware. The battles of New York, Virginia, or the Lexington Green. Running through the woods looking to recruit militia members to fight for the revolution.
In the area of Boston where I live, there are all types of catacombs beneath the city that were used during the revolution as hideouts, transportatin routes for wounded soliders from the military hospitals to the old base. Not many people outside the area know about. It would be fun as hell to run around those virtually and see them ripe with life planning the battle that brought us our great country. Or call a congregation in an old farm house somewhere between New York and Philly. Play as a senator, a general, a farmer, a spy, a nurse or a slave fighting for freedom not only from the British but from his master.

The next big MMO? Allright, I can give out my baseless statement of the day;
SWG2: KOTOR
What? Bioware has announced that they are making an MMO... And most of the others in this thread are dreaming, why can't I?
But keeping things limited to what is actually coming out, I am putting my trust into WAR. I do not believe it will be a WoW killer, by all accounts that is not what is intended, but it should be a great game.
I think the next big MMO to come out, and one that is still in PRE-Development, will be Star Trek Online. Why am I putting a gap that wide between now and when that comes out? The only Sci-Fi MMO that I see thats hitting my local stores shelves anytime soon, is RF online.
RF online has been out in Asia for a little while now, and the game is one huge grind. I personally, HATE that big of grinds. A little bit is fine, but c'mon, it took a guy in korea a year to get to the final level in the game.
That and I wanna see perpetual take it to $OE and thier lame ass Star Wars MMO.
If I was answering this question a couple of months ago I would have said Age of Conan without much doubt in my mind. From the early press releases and the early information that was being given out by the devs, it seemed that the game would be a massive hit. Geared towards the gamer that couldn't spend countless hours on-line, what looked to be a wicked concept and combat system, a deep world to explore for the PvEer, great potential for crafting, and so many possibilities for a good faction based PvP system.
Things seem to be quickly going downhill though, at least for my tastes. The devs seem to be backing away from a lot of the initial info given. Now the game seems to be moving towards actually being geared towards hardcore gamers. The PvE element has taken a backseat to the PvP. The PvP will be guild driven=becoming stagnant really quickly imo, no factions of any kind, and guilds will essentially be mandatory to join if you want to fully experience the game. Some of the unique skills that were proposed have now been tied into being in a guild, you will even need to be in a guild if you want to craft. The world will be instance heavy as well, nothing seemless here it looks like. It actually seems like instead of taking what WoW did, leaving out the bad and adapting and expanding on the good things to work in this game, they've fallen victim to the "I'm cooler than that" syndrome and the developers think they're so good they can do everything different and be a success. WoW is far from perfect I know, but there is reasons why it has 6 million+ subscribers.
So now I would say the first game that comes out with decent graphics and decent combat system, good faction based PvP, and good story driven quests will be the next big thing, whatever that may be.
Age of Conan will be the main MMO in my opinion. Like DaBearman mentioned, the guild situation with PvP makes the game look fantastic. The graphics look great, and knowing FC, it will be updated regularly with new content.
Of course, Vanguard looks good as well, but I'm worried it's too much of a persistent world and not enough of an MMO. So I am holding out my judgment until I see some beta reviews (for both games.)
Other than that, well, Spore comes out in 3rd quarter...
Vanguard. Star Trek Online and Warhmmer, will be the big ones (just my opinion), but spellborn and a few others look good and could sneak up. The fantasy MMO's will have a harder time competing , and the Sc-FI games with very few worth a crap out (EVE is good and RF might hang on) they have the biggest chance to succed. Sony destroyed SWG so EVE is almost all alone (RF new and only time will tell if they can make it).

Ya I mentioned it, but not as a plus. I think it's a stupid decision that's just one of a few that's going to make this game suck. Just like AO does imo. It'll fun for the fanbois that have been in the game for like forever and spend half their lives everyday playing it, but for everyone else it'll just be a big bore. I've been reading a bit more about the game since my first post, and it's going in the completely wrong direction. Going downhill before it even starts beta testing.
warhammer will easily be the next big game to hit the market, so far it seems that mythic is going to implement a great pve system, and i mean its mythic so the PvP is obviously the best no one can compete with them there.
From what i've seen it could appeal to WoW players, both novice and hardcore, and some aspects i've seen soo soo remind me of those memories i have of Ultima Online, i think UO players will also love this
"Heavenly Bodies™" is a Massive Multiplayer Ultra Genre Game (MMOUGG™) that will be played by hundreds of thousands of people world wide. Game play involves player-characters living in a universe where magic and science co-exist, where gods oversee galactic empires and any adventure is possible. "Guardians" appointed by the gods, watch over and interact with the player-characters' as they embark on adventures encompassing a variety of games and mini-games, providing a unique experience for each player depending on his or her preference, from action to diplomacy.
Vanguard: Saga of Heroes - Undoubtably will become the most hyped and most populated of all the RPG's. They have the funding of Microsoft behind them, so they will not stop the project, they have some of the most involved minds behind EQ backing them, plus they have a new combat system. As we all know EQ has gripped alot of MMO players and has earned its notorious name rightfully. We will see alot of players flocking to this game and I have a feeling alot of advertising will be going on for it. As for my opinion on it - I dont really care for heavily structered classes, limited PvP and a difficult leveling grind, so Im one thats not even gonna touch it when it comes out. Sorry, but I want to custimize my character, thankyouverymuch.
Age of Conan - Looks like a great MMO, has some great ideas and already there is a hype behind it. Heard it has a wider pvp range than most games so I will be definitly be checking this one out.
Darkfall - This is the "old school" gamers last hope in a world of boring pvp and highly structered classes. There are actually more people backing Darkfall than you think. This game supports open ended PvP, a moderate level grind, and freedom, something thats a lost art in today's MMO's. Supposed to be similar to UO and AC, should be VERY fun and exiciting. Im definitly gonna check this one out once it comes out. Unfortunatly the money backing it seems to be slow but its coming along.
Overall I will definitly say Vanguard will have the most, Age of Conan Second with Darkfall trailing. Its going to be a battle royale, definitly as players know what they will want. And thats my report, sincerely,
Dr. Steelarm

Steelarm, Doctor of MMO gaming, ethics, and ideas.
I've been looking hard and right now i'm betting on vanguard to come out strong, they have the money and personnel to be a heavy weight, if they don't measure to the expectations, then it's a crap shoot.
I think potbs is the sleeper to watch, if they can do it right, it's going to be a nice change of pace. Different and good is very good
and there is a rumor that CCP hf. (the company that made Eve Online) is creating a new game, then i would guess that that is the next mmorp that will come out.
Warhammer Online is going to be the next big MMO in my opinion. From what ive seen, it looks like its a similar style to WoW, and u know how big WoW is.

In the next 2 years, the 'Regent' of the MMOs world in NA will be W.A.R.
The new King will be whatever Bioware will bring up, but what is the release date for that? 2k and 10? So W.A.R. will be the place holder.
Unless Heroes's Journey surprised us...I like what I read, I dunno if I can trust them.
And have no doubt, it will be medieval fantasy.

Different and good is very good
since Eve Online is number 1 on www.mmorpg.com
and there is a rumor that CCP hf. (the company that made Eve Online) is creating a new game, then i would guess that that is the next mmorp that will come out.
But who knows...
