I can't really answer for anyone else, but personally I am very excited about this game.
Honestly though, no-one knows enough about it to form an opinion yet. It's true that there will be no PvP in the traditional sense, but I have a feeling Turbine have something up their sleeve that will be just as fun.
For me personally, I prefer depth of content and playability over anything else and those are the two things no-one can honestly say anything about yet, except that Turbine have proven to be able to do both well in the past.
Best thing to do would be wait for Beta/Release and find out for yourself

Because turbine is going against the norm and excluding PVP. If they were to include pvp as we know it this game would be getting glowing remarks from all the doomsayers out there that love pvp. The other poster is right. Not enough is known about this game to judge it yet, other than no pvp.
What until E3, i am willing to bet that alot of info will be released then and beta will not be too far off. Then the real judgement of the game can begin based on the facts, not the no pvp= game suxs rule.
The reason why this game is doomed to failure is the following:
1) This is a book, taken to the movies now shoved in the gaming spotlight, all other books to movies to games have not turned out so well. Matrix Online, Star Wars Galaxies. 2) This game is being designed by Turbine, they simply do not have the knowledge to make an Immersive MMO. They are Real good at instancing though. 3) There will be no Crafting. No crafting means no diversity, and only dropped items will be in the game. 4) No Faction based Player verse Player, By not allowing people to play as an evil race, this limits the games roleplayability, it also takes out the adventure of traveling. What fun is it if you always know your safe? 5) Although they claim this game to follow the writing of J.R.R.T. this certaintly does't seem like it at all. J.R.R.T. would of wanted full playable races, and all out player based economy, from crafting to building the towns, to making the roads farming the fields. This game offers nothing. 6) The biggest reason why this game will fail is because the lack of options the player has to do in game, you can either grind out the same quests EVERYONE else is doing, or you can sit around in town and roleplay in a really crappy atmosphere chuck full of instances and no player owned anything. 7) The whole fact that the player cannot change anything whatsoever in game, from completeing a quest to killing a dragon, nothing has a special feel to it, it's hard to describe, it just lacks a personal feeling to it. 8) The gameplay itself looks terrible, I just don't understand what their will be to do here? I mean either standing around, or questing? There just isnt any options. 9) No vehicles no carts or wagons no nothing. All traveling will be on foot, I'm not even sure if they are allowing Mounts. 10) Do you seriously need anymore reaosns why this game is doomed to fail? If so please look at turbines track record, look and play the games turbine has released, those that arent canceled already, and then i want you to smack yourself in the head with a brick, for having to use all of this to show you why this game will fail.

Just because SWG and matrix online failed, and for reason of going away from the lore of the books for SWG. Is not a viable excuse to say this game will fail.
AC is still up and running and going strong and is not instanced. DDO is because if the make up of the game and the fact that it is about dungeons and no explorable world, which is exactly what turbine said they would deliver. AC2 failed because microsoft pushed it out of the starting gate before it was ready. NCsoft is who is real good at instancing via guild wars.
YES THERE IS CRAFTING IN THIS GAME. Look on the officail forums for this game. Also on lotrosource, the devs have said that crafting will be in the game at launch. They have not as of yet given any details on the crafting system they will implement.
This is the usual if there is no pvp then it can't be fun argument.
This game is following the writings of tolkien if you spent sometime reading the dev diaries you would see that. How do you know what tolkien would of wanted? Is his ghost whispering in your ear? Didn't think so. We don't know exactly what this game has to offer other than what they have said because they are not wanting to promise something to end up saying sorry that won't be in.
I think you have this game mixed up with DDO, which is a quest grinding game. As is the table top version of the game. LOTRO is a static world that you can explore and adventure in. DDO isn't.
There is the main story line from the books, then there is the sub story line which will take place in angmar. We as players will not be able to have an affect on the main story line, which tolkien has already told. We will have an affect on the sub story in angmar. This will be our focus. Though the fellowship will go about their bussiness we will be fighting the forces of angmar and affecting that story.
Other than trailers, which at this point in time are hooky looking, what basis of fact do you have to judge game play on a game that noone has played and isn't in beta yet? How do you know all you can do is stand around and quest? As i stated the devs have said crafting is in. As far as we know farming cuold be also, they haven't said yet.
AT launch there won't be any mounts. But if you had read up on this game you would know that with the rohan expansion mounts would be incluced.
What i need is factual reasons, not assumptions on why you feel this game will fail. I have provided facts from the main website that refute your assumptions about the game. You want to look at turbines games they have released. AC is still running and has monthly updates. AC2 failed. DDO is a month old and is getting ready for it's first update already.
there is a part of me that holds hope for this game, because that part of my brain, dispite everything I know about turbine, and the MMO market in general, and everything I've read about the game in particular, says 'But its Middle Earth! Lord of the Rings! they can't screw it up, it WILL be fun!"
the rest of my brain knows though... it IS turbine, the MMO's currently being released DO suck, the endgame potential of this game IS weak. Say what you want about waiting for beta, or this time being different, etc etc. The fundamental choices already made for this game really say alot to veteran MMO players that have been there, waited for beta before. And no, I'm not even counting PvP at all. Yes I love PvP, but even to me it's a toss up wether or not that should have a place in a lotr game. No PvP alone definetly isn't the game breaker here.

I feel the same way as Jerek does. I want it to be good because i want to be able to escape to middle earth and fight the battle between good and evil, but i know the decisions made for the game with ruin it for most. It's hit or miss, i wish for a good game, but my hopes aren't high, we'll see at beta.
