They should have been at the forefront of making an online card game before Hearthstone established its dominance.

True. But never is too late.

Competition is very good. While I know nothing about MTG , I do know that if this will be successful , then Blizzard needs to do big chances to Hearthstone. I like Hearthstone, but they need to do some pretty big improvements.

It wouldnt of mattered, Blizz does what it takes to cater to the masses. they take something, dumb it down and the masses love it. take overwatch for example, its not even close to the first little arena shooter. but its popular because its simplified enough so anybody can pick it up and play. takes very little brain power...

Same can be said of every online arena shooter game.

So wait, they already have a MTG online game, but the online one is a replica of the physical card game including booster prices and deck prices and release schedules so that kind of turned me off from that.

But then they released magic duels. Which was kind of along the hearth stone model already. So how does this differ from duels?

Also if it's releasing along current sets then it's literally the same thing as MTGO, so maybe that but revamped? I wonder what the pricing structure is like because I really don't feel like paying 3 dollars or 4 dollars per booster like MTGO was.

MTG has WAY more players than Hearthstone. The issue is, there is no good MTG game. The last ones was so P2W it was just sickening. I am sure this one will come out people will play a few games log out and never play again. That is just how MTG works in an online platform.

    This is what they said:

"The focus of MTG Arena will be on the newest cards and game modes," notes vice president of digital game development Jeffrey Steefel. "Because of this, we know that Magic Online -- which has a library of nearly every card ever printed from the game's entire history -- will continue to offer experiences to players that are unique to Magic Online. Development on Magic Online will continue with new card sets, new updates, and ongoing tournaments." https://www.destructoid.com/free-to-play-magic-the-gathering-arena-revealed-459778.phtml

Hmm interesting, so they sound like they want to phase out each old set as new ones come out. I wonder what the pay structure will be like. I really enjoy magic, and standard magic is really fun, but I prefer the real cards since I get something physical to have, as opposed to some digital thing that might go away at some point. Maybe it will be a completely new type of pay structure for an online card game.

They were and i was there for 15 years of MTG until the time of the online version.
Before i go any further, the MTG design is still miles better and more a true pvp game than hearthstone is likely ever to be.The reason is simple,Blizzard is pulling a fast one ,a VERY sneaky design to give players the thought of easy to get into and play and it is NEITHER.

The ONE and only thing Hearthstone has going for it is the clarity of the game board and cards, they are easier to see and follow. If you ever try to follow a mtg online game is is near impossible unless a huge fan to follow any of it,including the cards themselves.

HS heroes is bad because they are NOT balanced so Blizzard nerfs based on winning or too much complaining and NOT to make sure all areas are balanced.

MTG also was far too greedy in it's online version but at least did offer the chance to get a trade in for real live cards if you completed a set.Blizz on the other hand is greedy in it's own design,NO TRADING is just total bullshit and unacceptable. They created the GOLD system to force players to keep playing making the servers stay busy and for VERY little gold, basically 1 pack a day max.Except after you open that pack you are bound to it,so it has ZERO value afterwards aside from dusting which is a ripoff.

The biggest and worst difference is that as a pvp player you can NOT react to each play, you have to sit and twiddle your thumbs while your opponent runs off his entire turn and that is BAD PVP gaming.MTG allows you to contest EVERY single play and that is the way pvp SHOULD be.

BOTH games need to improve and imo this WOTC rendition is just weird, like what can they possibly do to change what has already been done?So to me it sounds like double dipping, just give it a new name "ARENA".

I still remember some of my first trips to card shops. I made the mistake of buying a whole box of Homelands.

Just like every other card game, it will be P2W and packs/cards etc will cost a boatload more than a physical pack, guaranteed..Everyone in the gaming industry have been so goddamn money hungry over the years, they truly dont give ashit about anything but the $$

lol is this a troll comment? They were at the forefront before Hearthstone was even a thought. This is another MTG game, not their first.

    P2W. :)
I love Magic The Gathering, and I started playing when the game was released and I still have cards from Alpha and Beta. I remember when I was extremely overpowered that I stopped using power-nine cards and overpowered cards that few people can get in order to balance out against the players that are out there.

Magic The Gathering is a game of the mind.
The idea is to make new combinations and break out with what is available out there. Not overpower every single deck with a combination that works 70 - 80% of the time.

    The question is
"Do you prioritize winning? or do you prioritize growth?"

I went from prioritizing winning to prioritizing growth. I rather see what people have to put out there and win or lose, I learn something.

So far a lot of games that are FREE become P2W and people spend beyond reckoning on those games just to tell people they are good at a game. Rather than earn a win the old fashion way, players can now buy their wins and show off to their closest friend.

Funny thing is that in the real world 99% of people don't give a damn about how good you are in an online game. :) So entertainment is just entertainment. :P

MtG by its very nature is pay to win.

Every Free 2 play TCG or CCG I can think of is pay 2 win, but that's normal for a card game so no one should be surprised by this. What really matters though is type of free to play model it is.

The questions that need to be asked are..

Can players compete without spending money?
Can players unlock every card to the set without spending money?

If players can compete and unlock all the cards over time without spending money than it's a good CCG F2p model. In Hearthstone, Elder Scroll Legends, Eternal and Magic Duels all have f2p models where you can do these things. MTG Arena will most likely follow suit.

Hmm they don't say if its a TCG, or CCG.

It's not a TCG, it's a CCG. There will be no trading in MTG Arena.

Do you play any card games with real cards?  MTG booster packs go for around $2.50 to $3.00 from what I see. Magic Duels booster packs were cheaper than this. What game are you referring to that the digital packs cost "boatloads" more than a physical pack?

Obviously the developers and publishers care about the money, it's a business. That's not all they care about though.
  • ShinamiShinami Member UncommonPosts: 825
    @BrokenSilence

Even more than that depending on where you get them. Also, if you find Booster packs from older sets, they are far more expensive. I remember when a Legends Booster pack was $50 and a Dark Booster pack was $25. Thank God for Boxed Sets while Expansions were out and common to buy.

To draw the masses one must cater to them.

Seeing as the masses bring along with a massive amount of money I can understand why Blizzard opts for this approach.
