As for what I'd do with that kind of money... build myself a friggin' fortress of solitude! A nice walled off terrain. Gotta be safe for that zombie apocalypse. And from asshole neighbors.

I'd probably invest in a small gaming studio, and get some insight into the business. Pick up some skills myself when I've got all the time in the world to do so. Help fund some cutting edge research in the fields of anti-aging and/or cybernetics, and see about putting the remainder to work on keeping me filthy rich. I'd especially need it if that research pays off ;)

I would buy the entire Star Citizen team and cancel the game just because I could. I would then heavily fund Hello Games to make No Mans Sky 2. Why? Because I could. And the salty tears, the delicious salty tears. They truly are priceless.

Nah, I'd travel the world for the rest of my life with houses on each continent. Might bring my Switch, nothing more.

I would buy Archeage and Trion, fire everybody, then dump all signs of pay to win, add actual decent content at high lvls and severely reduce the grind for gear at high end.  The higher end dungeons and content in general was completely lame and showed no imagination at all.  I'd probably also revamp the classes as not many builds were very fun to me.  Archeage had such big potential but got shit on by incompetence and greed.

That would give me something to play while designing my dream mmo.

It would be very similar to Shadowbane in mechanics, but with modern graphics.  Shadowbane for me hit the sweet spot with guild battles and intrigue, and not quite so harsh as some of the full loot games out there.  It had inventory only loot on death.  If it hadnt looked like shit and been ridden with bugs and lag in the beginnings, I think it'd be a top mmo today, if still somewhat niche compared to WoW.

I would add much of the lost interactivity and features that UO and other games had back in the day that nobody has been able to reproduce since, such as, to name very few...

-Ability to drop items in the environment that other people could pick up, from gear to barrels, bags of loot, trapped boxes etc.

-Meta such as being able to lure monsters into portals you have opened, to your house, to a small desert island, wherever.

-Non instanced housing to go with/in the SB style castles, or just out in the boonies... housing limited to one per account.  Keys that can be stolen if you are foolish enough to carry them in the wild.  Powerfull but not invincible guard patrols nearer to hub cities.  Players with houses on the frontiers should need to watch their ass.

-Teraforming ala Wurm/Life is Feudal etc.  Mining and Secret tunnels in and out of your clan fortress.  Cover the entrance with trees and bushes you can plant.  Dig too deep and get invaded by goblins and Balrogs.

-Mostly open world dungeons, some DAOC Darkness Falls style.  Maybe a very few instanced raids to keep raiders happy.  Watch your ass coming to/from the entrance tho.

-Faction based pvp with ability to go outlaw if you are willing to risk a very hard life.

    - One character per server, with RL ID verification.  If you trade with criminals regularly, you are marked as criminal also.  No farming mobs for a couple hours to clear this.  Like it or don't play!

Considering that after taxes you'd be left with about half a billion, I'd immediately call up my financial advisor and invest a large chunk, and see about ways (legal) to avoid some of those taxes.

I'd probably set up a couple of trusts for my nephews to go to college, structured in such a way that their bitch of a mother can't get her greedy paws on it.

A nice sum would be donated to various animal welfare organizations (Humane Society, ASPCA) and veteran's organizations (American Legion, VFW, USO). We can never do enough for our veterans.

After that, I'd pay off all outstanding debts of my immediate family, and spend it on the usual stuff like a nice home, cars, killer home theater / gaming setup, and so on.

I'd quit my job and start attending school full time, pursuing subjects which interest me without having to worry too much about whether or not any degree obtained would have any marketability when it comes to establishing a career. I'd still try to learn something practical though, just in case any investments don't pay off. Always have a backup plan!

The only thing I can think of which might be considered a bit of a foolish expense is to see about funding a sequel to Dredd. That movie was absolutely awesome, and I'd like to see what the people behind it could accomplish with a better budget and complete creative freedom, provided Karl Urban is willing to return.

AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

Hmm. I'd set 10 million aside to design my own MMORPG (been my dream for a decade and even longer to be a game developer but I don't want to be making someone else's game where I get no say and I see as sh*tty $$$ only design). The MMORPG would be far more like classic EQ1, Classic WoW, and the nice RvR aspects of classic DAoC. Group play all the way and soloing is boring, slow, and unrewarding and potentially very difficult to impossible for some class's. Crafting would be a key thing as well.

Far as the rest I'd open a number of small business's (one for the lady and a restaurant for myself). Decent house (NOT mansion) and enjoy traveling more. The vast majority would be split between savings at multiple banks or investments with a decent chunk in property investments in non western countries (Philippines, Singapore, Thailand as a few examples).

I'd start with the advice about winning the lottery given by the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban. Someone who knows what it's like to become very rich very quickly.

    • Hire a tax attorney first.

    • Don't take the lump sum. You don't want to blow it all in one spot.

    • If you weren't happy yesterday you won't be happy tomorrow. It's money. It's not happiness.

    • If you were happy yesterday, you are going to be a lot happier tomorrow. It's money. Life gets easier when you don't have to worry about the bills.

    • Tell all your friends and relatives no. They will ask. Tell them no. If you are close to them, you already know who needs help and what they need. Feel free to help SOME, but talk to your accountant before you do anything and remember this, no one needs 1m dollars for anything. No one needs 100k for anything. Anyone who asks is not your friend.

    • You don't become a smart investor when you win the lottery. Don't make investments. You can put it in the bank and live comfortably. Forever. You will sleep a lot better knowing you won't lose money.

Heck maybe just invest in Tesla heavily and call it a day.

Put the money towards something that would benefit all by %0.000000001 than me personally, because I dont need money as my life is perfectly comforable as is.

More money would just ruin what I have now, why fuck up a good thing?
Most of the money would need to be spent buying a piece of sovereign land, forming a country, and hiring a private army. Reason being all of the "game changing" renewable energy sources, that have already been or were in the process of being developed, are shut down.

That said I'd donate my lottery winnings to the cause ;)

Upgrade my PC to a NASA system, look down on all the peasants with crappy 1k to even maybe 10k PCs (seen an alienware for taht much lol) and I can go "wow your 10k dollar PC is crap compared to mine, mines a NASA computer"

    You would be disappointed.

Whilst designing an MMO is my dream job, it's still a job so I think if I won $1b I probably wouldn't be arsed about doing it.
Assuming we're talking 1billion after taxes (Which we probably aren't but let's say we are) I would do an MMO for sure.

500 million would make one of the most high budget MMOs ever produced.

1-2 million would be stuff I would immediately invest into a new house/car etc. I mean I could do more but I know I would be more than happy with that.

498-499 million I would just stick into low risk accounts as the interest from that would generate more than I need to live on for the rest of my life.

The thing is if I had that much money, my wants are relatively low. To guide the vision of a new AAA MMO would be one of the things that I would enjoy the most. I'm more than willing to live off 500 million and take a risk with the rest of it to achieve something like that.

I don't like travelling. I would give my family enough so they can live a life of luxury for their remaining years and I would probably still stay home and play video games. It's what I enjoy doing. Except I wouldn't have to stop to go to work anymore.

I would try to do more in terms of fighting animal abuse, set up animal shelters, and try to fight the cattle/pork industry on how they farm&harm.

Considering that after taxes you'd be left with about half a billion...
That's what's great in the French "lotto": all gains are 100% tax free.
At least in the United States, the lottery is basically a voluntary tax.

It's usually set up as something like, you can get the nominal amount you won paid out over the course of 25 years without any interest added, or you can half that amount up front.

It seems like people who win the lottery nearly always take the lump sum up front, so that they can hurry up and burn through the money.  It would be much smarter to have it paid out over the course of many years.  I don't care what the interest rate is; the salient goal is to not run out of money.  If you burn through all of your money once and it's gone, and then there's another payment coming next year, you have another chance to learn from your mistakes.  And then another one the year after, and another the year after that, and so forth.  If you take a lump sum, you only have one chance to get it right.

Taking the annuity is only smarter if you are a dumb ass.  You can get much better returns by investing it yourself (even in safe investments) rather than letting the government earn interest on it.

As is the lottery is a huge scam and should be illegal anyway.  It preys on the low income dreamers, is taxed multiple times, and is basically worse than old days casinos run by organized crime.  Call it a voluntary tax, but it is definitely predatory.

You pay in with taxed money.  They pay out a much lower rate than a casino could get away with, then they tax the winnings.  What they say you will win is a lie.  If anyone told you you were going to make 100k working for them for a year, then handed you 50k (then taxed it to 25k) and said well, after 20 or 40 years it will be 100k if you let us invest it... They would go to jail.

It is very hard to find numbers on what they pay out vs what they take in, for good reason.  They don't want you to know.  I've heard it is much lower than 50%, and that is before they re-tax the winnings.

If I were to win the lottery, I'd partition it out.

Take a certain percentage now and a certain percentage over an annuity. Best of both worlds.

Also, have you heard the popular phrase.

Gambling isn't necessarily stupid.  If you stick to small bets, regard it as entertainment, and expect to lose money on it, that's reasonable.  If you buy tickets to a sporting event and then buy food and parking at the event, you expect to lose money on the event as the price of the entertainment.

Now, if you gamble expecting to win or relying on winning, then that's stupid unless you're the casino or are especially sophisticated and stick to the tiny fraction of situations where you can turn the odds in your favor.

The lottery is not such a situation.  Plenty of games at casinos have an expected payout of over 90% of what you bet.  Lotteries are commonly closer to 50%, and the only ways to turn the odds in your favor can get you a lengthy prison sentence if you get caught.

    Oh by the way,

I gamble all the time on fantasy football and I make bets when playing golf and ping pong. But yeah, i agree with everything you say. I do it with the intention of losing money as a form to enhance the entertainment factor.

I would hire all the lawyers, hobbyists and mercenaries I needed to take down the pedo capital of the world, the Vatican.  Afterwards, sell all their assets and secrets.  That money would be used to actually help the poor and third world countries that the Vatican pretends to do now.  After that is achieved, I would build my underwater fortress and inevitably become the real world bioshock.  Except instead of people, it would be full only with cats and dogs.

Interesting question. My husband and I have actually discussed what we would do if we won the lottery in the sense of 100 million or so.

The answer is honestly quite simple.

If we had won a million
    1. We'd move where we wanted to live (trust me, it isn't here. Sick of the damned swamp and the hurricanes)
    2. We'd get a second home near my family in my home country so I could go home whenever I wanted.
    3. We'd buy a new car for my husband and a new car for me (I sooooo want a mustang, a camaro or a corvette)
We'd put the rest in the bank.

If we won 10 millions or more we'd do those and add some things
    4. I want to start my own business and it isn't in gaming. I want my own hotel. I've been wanting one for many years. It's where my experience lies, and honestly for all that I complain, I love it. But it is NOT cheap. I got ahold of my bosses property titles, and purchase prices recently. Costs range from 560k-2.7mil depending on the hotel, ranging from 14 rooms for the bed and breakfast to 30 rooms for the largest hotel. There's no way we could ever afford that. But if I had the money... it's not because I want the money it would make. It's because I want it to be MINE. I want to be the one in control. And I'm tired of seeing staff abused, and taken advantage of in almost every company I've ever worked for. I want to pay people properly, give good bonuses including 100% health care, and proper vacation time. I'd even be happy to offer profit sharing to all employees. I just want to do what I feel is right. No more prejudice, no more hatred, no more taking advantage of staff and treating people like dirt just because someone says so. I am tired of being treated like dirt because I dare to protest those behaviors too.
    5. We'd pay for our nieces and nephews college education so they never have to struggle like we did.
    6. I want to buy a house for my sister. She's a really good person, and she deserves it. She's had to struggle with many things in her life. This is one thing I wish she didn't have to worry about. I daydream about going home without telling her, buying a 2000 sq ft brand new house for her with enough bedrooms for the kids and herself, storage rooms, and other things to make her life easier.
    7. My husband wants to buy a house for his aunt who has done a great deal for him over the years, and for me too since I moved here. We lived with her for a while before buying our own house. She deserves it.

Other things? I don't know. We'd have to see.

Most of what I said was supposed to be just for fun and tongue in cheek.  The Vatican statement is 100% true though.  So not sure where you get the idea that I'm a conspiracy theorist.  Maybe you are just in denial.
