This game is causing me to bleed inside

Argh I went to all the trouble of dling this game and then patching it. At first it felt like it could be worth subing but after a few hours of playing it it's starting to be really REALLY horrible. I cant seem to be able to kill anything at all no matter how hard I try and believe me it gets boring and repeative to die within 2-3 minutes after respawn. I've probably spent more time looking at the respawn bar than actually playing the game. Well I'm gonna still try and learn the game but if nothing happens I'll just be happy that I never actually paid anything for the game. Oh yeah, also any tips on what I should do in this game as a newbie because I'm trying hard to like this game but it just isnt working out so well.

Hook up with a squad. There are few parts of planetside that you can really completely solo. You get bonus experience and experience from otehrs kills. Also it is a lot easier to kill someone when not only you are targetting them, but also when you ahve 3 friends helping you.

I second that.  I did the same thing as you awhile back.  I bought the game and tried to solo.  Like you said, you spend all your time either getting killed or not killing others.  However, when I started joining squads my experience became alot more pleasant.  You will still get killed alot early on but you will soon become more effective at killing others as you gain experience.

    Good Luck!

Well I guess I'll try to get in to a squad of some sort. I wasnt exactly trying to solo stuff rambo style but I was more like exploring the world. It just seemed weird for me not to be able to do anything against anyone because I'm used to the regular FPS games where I just aim high and bang I got a frag. Thanks for the tips guys. Off to play some more!

It is possible through strategy and tactics to have a rewarding solo experience; however I have yet to manage a break even kill ratio overall but I am darn close. I have had days that are wildly positive and wildly negative. Luck has been a factor but I think skill plays the larger role.

Things you can do at BR6

AAMax and defend a tower. Depending on how crafty the pilots are of the OPFOR and general visibility conditions you can do quite well shooting down enemy aircraft. One night about a week ago on Ishundar<sp> I sat atop a tower with great visibility and proceeded to shoot down 36 enemy aircraft over a two hour period. Other great places to hang out is on a ridge overlooking an enemy base that gens aircraft.

Major weaknesses find it hard to get in position and enemy infantry/armor pretty much own you due to your weapons ineffectiveness vs ground oponents. I die a lot getting into a good position but once that is achieved the carnage on enemy air forces is generally large.

Sniper: Still working out the kinks on this one much like the above except you are vulnerable to everything that finds you because your rifle sucks at short range. Takes 2 shots to kill an enemy soldier at range 8x zoom so if you can set yourself up someplace good overlooking an enemy base or tower with lots of infantry.......<cackles>

As previously mentioned hooking up with a squad is defintly the way to go, but there are alternate ways to solo at least somewhat successfully. You just have to be creative and take it slow. Charging straight up the middle only gets you killed.

First, join a squad. THEN, join an outfit. (if you're Vanu on Emerald server, i may be able to help there. send a /t to Azekiel1)  THEN, get set up with whatever VOIP your outfit runs - most of the big ones will have one, since it helps massively. Also, as mentioned, STICK WITH your squad. when you spawn, wait for someone else to spawn and move together; it's always better to have two or more guns on a single target.

and one important thing to remember about kill/Death ratios: the game is enirely PvP. if  your K/D is better than 1:1, you're doing, by definition, better than average. if you're worried about  it, get in a Tank with a decent driver or, as mentioned, an AA MAX (using an Infil suit and plasma grenades will work, but it will also earn you the absolute and unending hatred of  every other right-minded player. there is a special hell set aside for infil 'naders). Second thing to remember: there is NO death penalty, or even a permanent record of your death count... the only significance of the /d part is your own self esteem.

sniping is an excellent way to rack up kills, but you do need a pretty good grasp of the game mechanics to do it effectively, so it's not a good starting point (you don't have one-hit-kills, so not only do you have to catch your target in the open, you have to catch them far enough away from cover or in such a position that they can't just hide before you land the coup de grace shot... etc.).

another thing that might not come naturally to those from an MMORPG background: watch what other people do and copy it. there are snipers who can nail a Cloaker behind them and at zero feet  in the time  it takes to fire half an AMP clip and it's not because they paid points into anti-cloaker skills (well... maybe Darklight), just good reactions and plenty of practice.

i could talk all day about specific weapons, situations, etc. my best advice though: join a Decent outfit [plug]like the Vindicators, say,[/plug] and listen to the vets.

It's not funny, it's not clever, and it WILL break if you play with it.

    Drools........

it's not actually all that hard, since a sniper rifle DOES one-shot-kill a cloaker - in fact the Zero feet thing is actually a benefit, since it'd be harder to hit someone at ten feet. the sniper rifle is about the only weapon whose CoF expands even when you turn on the spot, rather than only when you move, but at zero feet the width of the entire cone even at maximum diameter fits inside the width of the cloaker's body. stick your cursor on his chest and BAM! click to respawn...

see, it's this and many other little things you'll pick up from just watching other people do it and trying things out. :)

Defintly there is a bit of a learning curve to planet side. More so than with just a typical FPS.

The sniper rifle seems quite limited, the stongest one takes 3-4 hits to kill most normal suits, don't even bother on anything bigger.

Trying to lead anything does not work with them since your aim will be way off and you have to keep your cross hairs on one spot and hope something passes through it to simply hit anything.

Really a useless concept on how they implemented sniping.

two hits on anything softer than a MAX. since there is no damage degredation on the sniper rifle and since there's no locational damage, it'll do 65-75 health damage per hit guaranteed, which means unless they get a chance to heal themselves, it will ALWAYS take exactly two hits: 2x65-75>100 (full health). as for leading your shots, you just have to aim far enough ahead that you can let the crosshair stop and return to tightest CoF before they get to it. it takes some getting used to if you're more used to an AWP or the like, but watch how many Sniper kills you see in a busy base fight and tell me again it's impossible :)

also, Sniper Rifles play merry hell with BFR systems. shoot at the shield generator (little glowing thing on the back) or the guns to really irritate those Bifferers.

Sniping is quite challenging in Planetside.  It requires alot of anticipation of enemy movement and recognition of where they can run to and find cover.  After that first shot, your enemy will mostly like run like crazy to cover if he can find it.

Sniping is also a great playstyle if you have a friend you can team up with on VOIP (even if it's just the in-game voice chat- which is kinda buggy).  Coordinate targets and shoot at the same time for insta-gibbage and fear on the battlefield.  Even better hook up with another friend to run an AA max to protect you two from aircraft (a BIG predator of snipers).

Oh yeah. Also, counter-sniping is fun :) many snipers will just sit there if you hit them just after they fire - hoping to line up their own second hit before you finish them. Also, many forget that you can fire under some floating vehicles like Magriders and the like, and that some rocks curve inwards before they meet the ground, allowing you to see their feet when they can't see you. there's no locational damage - shooting the very tip of a toe is just as lethal as putting a bolt through the brainpan.

I have been having increasing luck at this but I still have a long way to go. It is defintly its own seperate art form.
