After alpha/beta testing and then playing a number of these games and others some observations are that once a company takes a short sided view of grabbing as much money now rather than making it over the long haul, players start to drift away. The make money now process leads to fewer new players and the old players start going away. The second cause of players deserting a game has to do with providing quality, new content. Popping in a repetitious update, even just having a bug fix update does not gain loyalty. Once the players get bored they move on. And finally, the game has to keep raising the level max. Once a player reaches the level max they will usually continue for a short while, but if the level max doesn't change, especially if there is no quality updates, the players move on to the next challenge in a new game. It is truly sad that so many great games have gone rolling the game graveyard over one or more of these reasons. A loyal gamer will stick with a game as long as they are happy. Once the balance of happy starts slipping to unhappy they will leave.

Of this list, I only played around with WAR, but only with the free trial.  I was fascinated with the open-world public quests for awhile.

But mostly, I never played any of the games on this list.  I don't consider it a missed opportunity, though.  With the broken states and flaws that others have pointed out, I'm lucky to have saved so much of my time for other games.

Bill.  Reasonable list, even if it did leave out one of the major influences of Auto Assault, Steve Jackson Games' wonderful Car Wars game.  Now, if only a game developer would have been more influenced by Creature that Ate Sheboygan.  Crush, Crumble and Chomp wasn't a bad effort, but it needed a lot more.

Here I was thinking this thread would be about UO2 and the like.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

I played 5 of the 10 on this list (including 2 of the top 3), and enjoyed my time in all. That being said, for me personally nothing will ever top Asheron's Call. This was a game truly ahead of its time that drew you into its world like nothing I've ever played since.

For those who don't know, the fight to #SaveAsheronsCall continues to this day. WB promised the community player-run servers, and even sold lifetime subscriptions under this premise, but later reneged on these promises and shut the game down. They won't cooperate with efforts to revive AC or license the IP, they squash attempts to run private communities with C&D, and worst of all they refuse to communicate any information, explanation, or justification whatsoever.

Furthermore, this evil treatment should be concerning to ALL MMO players, i.e. anyone reading this article. The concept of game preservation has been in the news a lot lately, and nowhere is it more complicated than with MMOs. We can't let WB's example become an industry standard. This is not good for gamers or developers. Heck, it isn't even fair to the games themselves! These are amazing creations and they do not deserve to be lost to the shadows of time, profit, & corporate greed...

We all miss our game and are passionate about seeing it revived. SAVE ASHERON'S CALL!

I was going to say World of Darkness, but unfortunately, it was never fully launched.
Hello, brother. We are in the same boat, fellow World of Darkness lover.

But, FYI, White Wolf got their rights back and are in talk with Obisidian for an WOD crpg.
They also got the WoD MMO's art assets along with that deal if I recall. When they showed some of them briefly at their WoD con thing earlier this year, it got me hoping that they might yet get used.

As it was only online for 15 months (even AA made it to 16) and launched during a very competitive time frame (WOW was still climbing towards its record setting.peak) likely many never got to play it.

It was always going to be good after some promised functionality was delivered in the future,  but time ran out, perhaps too quickly but NCSoft wasn't giving games much time back then to prove their worth.

I know that NCsoft claims it was all about the money but I will never understand how they could close the best superhero MMO on the market at a time when western superheroes had never been more popular. Seems like with a little more advertising they could have temporarily solved the income issue and kept the players happy for at least another year.

    Coulda, woulda, shoulda.

More like... mighta... and that wasn't enough for them, clearly.

By then it is quite likely it would have been spending good money after bad in their view. Perhaps if the change in marketing model had worked out better for them they would have felt investing in advertising to be more viable than they did.

But, really, even with all the current interest in superheroes, superhero MMORPGs and MMOs remain niche products compared to their fellows in other genres, and I doubt this will change even when all the contenders on the horizon make their appearance.

I have yet to fill the void left by City of Heroes and believe me I've tried. I also agree with others Tabula Rasa was great and was a shame to see it go.

I wonder if anyone else out there is like me and preferred the original vision of Tabula Rasa?

Played and loved them all but Shadowbane and Planetside. Three others mentioned by others that I was sad to see go were Tabula Rasa, Chronicles of Spellborn, and Asheron's Call 2. AC2 had some of my favorite classes out of all MMOs so far, and the combat wheel in Spellborn was just the coolest thing ever in my opinion. I loved the strategy involved in setting up the combat wheel to allow different skill combinations.

swg is the most overhyped game ever created.  Those still holding on to this epic failure as your gold star of a video game in my opinion have no business talking about video games.

SWG did a lot of things right and first. It placed you in the world of Star Wars, you got to do what you wanted. Most MMO's now play the you are the hero card (Just like everyone else) be the chosen one (like everyone else).
SWG broke a lot of ground for those games that came after it. Sometimes the greatest thing you can be is a mistake for others not to follow.

Shutdown means that there was a reason.
I will miss the many games that were terminated while I was a customer.
Unfortunately, only private servers being back the appeal.

These 10 aren't the first and definitely won't be the last games that would be shutdown.

Was this article pre-planned or was it written in response to all the complaining on the other top-10 article?

It's comical to me how there were so many comments on the first article complaining about certain games not being included. Now 10 more were published and there are still so many complaints. You could publish a list of 'top x-1' (x being all MMOs to have existed) and someone would figure out the one not included, probably just to complain about it not being included.

Nah, there were a lot of people that didn't care for it. I suppose there were multiple reasons, I just can't give you any specific ones. CoH gave me a lot of what I wanted at just the time I needed it. Really wish I had it back as I need it again. :(

I've got a feevah, and the only prescription... is more cowbell.

Right there with you, tried it at launch and when CoV launched, both times I just didn't see the draw.

The Hero's Journey In Memorium It would have been the best ever, and its concept, which once existed in such games as Asheron's Call, Everquest, Star Wars Galaxies Online and other, is that it had Digital Actors, usually played by programming or other Computer Game Company Staff, but Digital Interaction just the same. Someone needs to bring THAT game alive, if no better ideas currently exist. That game isn't officially dead, just dead in spirit. Maybe they'd be willing to finish it if they had a business partner or partners? Maybe a crowdfunding thing to bring it back? That or another game like it, I'm still waiting on your more permanent cousin :D
