MMO developer blamed after 13 year-old Chinese boy falls to his death
The parents of a 13 year-old boy who died falling from a building
are suing World of Warcraftdeveloper Blizzard, claiming that the
massively-multiplayer online game is to blame for their son's death.

According to Chinese news agency Xinhua, the parents, who reside in
the city of Tianjin, claim the boy jumped to his death whilst
re-enacting a scene from the game. They are supported by Zhang
Chunliang, a well-known activist whose campaign seeks to highlight the
dangers of Internet addiction.

Chunliang, who says he has talked to more than 60 parents whose
children have become addicted to online gaming, is now set to file suit
against Blizzard over the boy's death.

There are more than 1.5 million World of Warcraft players in China -
making up more than a third of the game's worldwide subscriber base,
even though the game only went on sale there in June. The9 acts as
Blizzard's partner in the region, providing localisation and support
services for the game.

Neither Blizzard nor The9 were available for comment.

Usual BS. First it was video nasties, then music (specifically Judas Priest) and now after the GTA furore, MMORPGs are the new 'evil'. It is a very sad story, but kids have died from doing stupid, silly things. Some get lucky and learn from their near 'miss', whilst others - like this poor kid - do not have the luxury of another opportunity.

Let's get back to basics and start to ACT like parents by being RESPONSIBLE for children by monitoring their access to the 'net, how much time is spent in front of the TV, playing games, etc.

Whether in grief or pure cold exploitation, it is far easier to blame an external force than to look inwards at ourselves. It is a sad tale, but one heard far too many times before and it's the same old drama - blame someone/something else.

They will never be able to prove that there is a link between the kid playing WoW, and him jumping. These idiots need to realise that they were shit parents, and left their kid play 24/7, and leave it at that.

I agree with you both about this.  How in the world can you link him being suicidal to a game?  Almost every game that I've played in my days you jump off high areas.  What about Mario, why don't they sue them?  or Zelda.  Your right, this is nothing new.  It's sad that a boy died, but it's sad that these parents actually think the video game was the problem.  The real problem was in the home, obviously.

I don't see this coming far into court.

I think the only way this can be legit is if the kid was dressed up in a night elf outfit with WoW armor on and doing a flip off the building.

Come on people, get your heads straight.

It's because of people like this that the world has driving saftey videos pointing out that drinking and driving is a bad idea, and not wearing seat belts can result in your head going through the windscreen! I say remove all saftey labels from everything and let natural selection take its course, then we'd be rid of these people!

If they'd have been responsible parents and limited the amount of time he spent on the game, then maybe it wouldn't have ended that way. Blizzard arn't to blame, they are!

  • Zaxx99Zaxx99 Member Posts: 1,761

    Sad story.. and I agree that blaming the game/Blizzard is ridiculous when it was obviously the parents primary fault. If their kid was a dare-devil or retarded enough to think he could actually jump off and survive, then they should have long known this and been much more watchful. And who's to say that he didn't commit suicide? Maybe he did it (and maybe he spent so much time in a fantasy world like WoW) because... {drumroll}.... he felt like nobody loved or "cared" about him... even his parents! DOH! Nah, could never have been THAT! {end drumroll}

All I have to say for the parents is I'm sorry for their loss. Trying to gain him back by replacing him with money will definately not work in the long run even IF they were to be successful. But they won't win. Not a chance in hell. If you ask me, they need their asses kicked for child neglection first and foremost, then they need bitch-slapped secondly for being greedy thinking that money will somehow fill their now-empty void.

But hey, I can give them credit on one small thing... Atleast they are trying to sue somebody that has money and a helluva lot of it, heh. Better then all the idiots out there trying to sue their neighbors etc that can't even pay their own bills and have no money to start with. If ya gonna sue someone, hell atleast sue somebody that has the most damn money.

I back Blizzard completely on this one. Oh yeh, I also back the poor concrete where the dumbass kid spilled his blood all over it and made a mess on the poor concrete. I hope the concrete has been cleaned well and will be okay. Damn stupid kids. It'll be okay concrete.... {pats concrete on the back} ::::01::

There is a quest in world of warcrafr called "Leap of Faith". The character is instructed to jump from a great height. When the player does so, half way through their fall they are miraculously teleported back to the quest-giver and rewarded for their jump.

Again, peoples not taking their responsabilities blaming other.

If anyone is responsible for a 13 year old boy jumping to his death, it is the peoples responsible to educate him, their parents first and their teachers as a last resort, however teachers have hundred of students, can't overly blame them while parents don't have that many children and should have spent the time necessary to educate a kid that a game is just a game.

I can easily see this to the next step, someone sueing because his friend don't respawn after a death...

well said anofalye...as sad as this story is and as much as i wish i could have spoken and educated  this kid before he plunged ...no one can be sued to me at the end of the day its natural selection...i know for a fact at 13 years old i had a very good concept of gravity and what would happen to my body if i abused gravity

    I dont get it?

The parents couldnt just tell the kid he couldnt play any more?

Perhaps they should look at their own parenting skills.

I just don't see how in the world this would ever pass in court.  If it did, then China has some major issues over there.

First off, how distance and pathetic do you have to be, even at 13, to believe that IF you jump like the characters in the games do, that you'll survive.  What, now are games going to post "Don't try this at home" before each mission or each time you start up the game?

This world has something coming to it in the future, seriously.

When I was 13 I was hopelessly addicted to UO, but I never went out and had sword fights. I am willing to bet that 99% of these "video game related deaths" aren't video game related at all. The kid was probably just depressed and figured jumping off some cliff or whatever was the easiest way to not be depressed anymore.

  • ScottcScottc Member Posts: 680
New MMORPGs will no longer have the ability to jump.

I remember jumping off the tou-tou tower in Asheron's Call.  For some reason I never jumped off the Sears Tower when I was in Chicago though.  I was addicted to Asheron's Call too.  Stupid greedy parents....

I too was a UO fan also.  You never saw me standing motionless infront of a bank facing the wall yelling "Bank my guards!!"

I'm sick and tired of things like this!

out of the what, 5 million people that play WOW, and millions more that play other mmo's...theres about a handful that go off and kill themselves because they are just frankly a little bit strange in the head. This then makes a bad image of MMO's. Cmon now! We all know the lesson of, if jimmy jumps off the bridge are you gonna follow him and do the same? No! Its ridiculous. Why can't we get rid of news and such if all it is going to be is about the 1% of something that is rotten. Why is that really!? I r Frustrated!!

    K on to other things...

Nvm I dont have much else to say.

EDIT: I remembered what I was going to say now.
What is the point of sueing really!? Why is this world so hooked on money. Money is nothing, what is Millions upon millions of dollars going to do for your loved one that has died?! Why when someone has experienced tons of emotional pain because of something they can SUE someone for this!? how does this have a Numerical $ value anyways??
Seriously we are all corrupt! Money is evil!
    You are evil!

    GET AWAY!!!

No, China was never communism. Just because the political party called itself "communist party", doesn't make the country a communist country. Nor USSR, nor any country ever existed on this planet.

True communism should be something like the Federation social system in StarTrek. Where there must be NO currency.(money does NOT exist) Everyone just do their job for the good of society, and receive no pay, yet you can just "shopping" anything you want without paying either.
Yet there are 2 requirements for it to work,
    1. very advanced technologies to have enough production for everyone gets what they want
    2. Everyone must be selfless instead of the greedy bastards everywhere today.

You can see why true communism is a perfect social system, but it just won't work in the next a couple of hundreds years on this planet due to the primitive technologies and the greed of people...
