This game really does rule. Ive played if off and on for several years now. My main complaint, if not my only now that mobile spawns units and being able to spawn at enemy CPs has speeded up getting into combat. Would be the infantry and tank combat interface.
If you are a rifleman for instance and you shoot and EI(enemy infantry) at say 30 yards and kill him. He has a couple second period where he can fireback and kill you even though it is completly unrealistic that this would happen. This does happen ALL the time too! It gets annoying making good "plays" against the enemy and being robbed of it due to this.
Tank combat is a little harder to complain about without crossing what could and couldnt happen on a battlefield. There is alot of luck, alot of skill and some general knowledge about the tank you are taking on needed to be good with a tank in this game. However, I dont feel it is right to be able to put round after round after round into enemy tanks without them being destroyed, then have them turn around and put one round into blowing you to hell. This happens often too leaving you feeling robbed.
I didnt plan on this being the reveiw that it is turning into. My actual feeling on this game are very praising. For the few flaws I have listed this game has so much to offer. I dont know of a better plane fighting game. Not just planes fighting planes, but planes vs tanks, infantry, anti-aircraft. The game is wild and if you havent tried it. You should try it and invest time into becoming good at atleast one aspect of it. You wont regret it.

lag, sadly something all games that are played over the internet have to deal with. But I must say a couple of seconds I have never seen in game, tops one second or so as the data has to be sent to the server and tested for cheating before he can be confirmed as a kill.
Very often they die almost instantly (which is almost less realistic).

Well, you shouldn't feel.
Just because you hit a tank does not mean that you deserve the kill :P
The main reason why this is such a good tank simulator (the best one in existance, most likely) is because of it's very advanced and great damagemodel. Just shoting round after round at a tank might not do anything to it if they do not have the power to go through the armour.
of course noone likes to loose in a game
On their screen they shot you first and then you shot them.
In a fair system like WW2OL, if you shoot them on your screen they die, otherwise if it was first packet to server then people in Texas would never lose.
I do realize that the tanks models are done to spec. Or atleast there has been tons of research done to get it as close to "real" as possible. I am not one to speak with knowledge of what could happen on the battlefield. That is why my opening statement on the matter was " Tank combat is a little harder to complain about without crossing what could and couldnt happen on a battlefield".
But I do rightfully feel robbed. For example, and this is not an extreme example. I take a Stuart out to the battle field and run into a 38t already engaged with another allied take at close enough range for me to put 20 rounds into it without missing. Just completely bombarding it. Then it turns to me and fires 1-2 shots flamming me to meet my maker. Instances more and less severe like this happen all the time and it does leave one feeling robbed.
It leaves you wondering what you did wrong if anything. Who is to say that may have been exactly the way it would have played out 70 years ago too. But I guarantee you the poor SoBs burning in that Stuart were feeling robbed aswell. And of course noone likes to burn in a game or RL.
As for the infantry lag issue the other person explained quite well I beleive. I do wonder why after 5 years later they still havnt caught up to other FPS style game who do not have this problem. Is the engine to blame or what? America's Army for instance. Its not nearly the game WWIIO is but the first one to shoot and hit usually wins and I like that! Cause odds are its me...
Other FPS's are played mostly on local servers where everyone has a 20ms ping...... place many of them work on a first packet to server or a time stamped packed to determine who won.
Completely unfair if you're playing an MMO where most people have ping times measured in hundreds of ms.
Plus just because on your screen you shot first doesn't mean you shot first. When both people die both saw themselves shoot first. One person doesn't get shot and then shoot back.
Also you have to know what tank you are in. the MM do matter, however the game does not actualy show you (this you have to find out by research yourself) that some types of guns with lower MM are more powerful than some of the bigger MM guns. For instance a Panhard only has like a 25mm gun, however it's gun is very powerful in compareson to some of the medium tanks the french and british get. It can easly take out a Stug or even a Pz4D at 800 meters at or near a 90degree angle to the side, and 1km for the rear. However in order to do anything to the front you'd have to be within 100 meters.
You also have to vary in the Angle of Attack. a shell hitting a tank at a 45 degree angle tot he horizontal is roughly only doing half of what it's capable of doing, and will often just skim the plate, weakening it minutely, or doing nothing but knocking on it. However sometimes if you can hit the tank at 45 degrees from the vertical you can usualy hit the top of the armor (which is much thinner compared to the rest of it, accept on ocation for the rear of the tank) and cause major damage either by actualy penitrating it or causing the interior of the tank to brake off and fly around like shrapnel.
Besides the variation on the ammo each side and each tank uses (germans being the best because they use HEAT rounds which penitrate and explode). The type of armor the tanks are constructed with effects it. For instance the French have the weakest armament. They use an older amd cheaper style of armor on all their tanks, simply slapping more on for the bigger tanks instead of improving the armor itself. The British and the Germans have upgraded to a better armor system, however the germans tend to use more of it all over and a rediculous amount on the front, making it near impossible for early medium tanks to do any frontal damage to their Pz4 line of tanks.
It is in all honosty, both proven by variables and in practice, that over all the germans have better tanks. The only advantages we have are the shear number of variations of tanks we can use for different situations. At various times in the campain it is almost certain that all you will run into are 3 types of tanks on the german side, so I know what I'm going to face. However at any given point on the Allied side I still see Tier 0 tanks being used quite often, so the germans have more variables of how they must intercept a tank. That is untill they get their Tigers which has the most potent of the HEAT rounds, can shoot with great accuracy at magnificent distances, and has the best armor value in the entire game. It's fast pretty fast for a heavy tank and goes through gears like nobuddies business. The only tank it might have trouble with is the M10 Wolvierien, but that tank has an open canipie and an angled shot into it sends it to the scrapyard. I'm not saying the tiger is impossible to kill, with a smart sapper or a great tank commander (or with shier numbers working against it) it can be stoped real quick. Just not as easly as other tanks. For those reasons I actualy perfer to play the Allied side, forces me to work harder and I feel better destroying their equipment:-P
Top Ten Most Misused Words/Phrases in MMO Industry...
Lets not use the word accurate or historical when it comes to armor physics. The Sherman is a perfect example in this game that could not use either of those adjatives.
