EA and DICE have responded to beta players' concerns about the loot system in Star Wars Battlefront 2. During the beta, it was discovered that progression to the best items in the game would require purchasing loot crates. The outcry at this news was heard loud and clear by publisher and developer resulting in a new blog post detailing a number of changes to the system in time for launch later this month.

sad times for fair gameplay
What these changes do is not remove the need to spend, but make the need for spending more consistent - your Boba Fett invulnerability isn't a random drop anymore, it's a result of crafting resources (that come from loot boxes). In the previous iteration, you could get lucky and get good cards straight up. Now, everyone will need to spend roughly the same amount.
It is my guess that the in-game loot box awards won't be enough to get you the crafting resources you need. If that was the case, you could remove the crafting material from loot boxes altogether. They obviously don't plan on doing that - you will reach a plateau where getting materials is unfeasible by in-game means.
The cynic in me also looks at their quote "Epic Star Cards, the highest tier of Star Cards available at launch, have been removed from Crates." I can see a world where 2 months from now, a new hero comes out (free for everyone as they promised), but accompanied by "launch packs" of various tiers. If you don't buy these, you will need to play hundreds of matches to get the Star Cards for that hero. If you want your hero to be powerful instantly, you'll be able to buy these limited-time packs that will have that hero's epic card guaranteed. (This is just speculation, but it's the exact thing they do in their mobile games).

Their first PR response was : It's not an issue, you just didn't see our complete system. Remember they thought we were naive enough to buy that. (sadly some were) You don't get a pat on the back for not being a greedy pos.
The game will still be a success and sell millions .. but this time around I'm off the wagon, go pound sand EA.
FTFY

Even with these changes it is still pretty much lootbox progression and for me having played mmo's for long enough I can see how easily it is for things to get alot worse. Some people arent happy with making a decent profit, they want to go all in and fleece their customers for everything they can get.
For that I cannot buy into games that encourage this type of business as it is one big slippery slope that is going to get worse fast.
When was this? I remember people who had a time advantage...

There have always been people willing to spend money on game items. Companies are just figuring out how best to cater to them.

Same way people today sell in game hacks. They profit on it. I'd rather that the companies not get tired of fighting it, spending money to do so, and see other people who have nothing to do with their company profiting.

It would be like paintball where my team got automatic weapons and the enemy teams had to throw their paintballs at us... Sure we would win... but /golfclap? And that would get boring real fast anyhow... maybe another reason game retention is so bad.

He's probably talking about the days before shooters added in RPG mechanics and everyone got all the weapons when you first started playing the game instead of locking the best ones behind progression mechanics so you can monetize it somehow.
The fact that we are sitting here discussing microtransactions and advantages in a multiplayer shooter says it all really.
