I'm just exploring the idea of playing a mmorpg and so far people have been helpful and also pointed out that there is a distinction in game systems between point and click (I think of as Diablo style) and first person shooter type systems.
I've never cared for the diablo style of games, they always felt tedious and slow and I couldn't imagine putting in vast hours of time with that kind of interface. FPS however would keep me going, so I'd just like to know what are the best FPS mmorpg out there? It doesn't matter the genre.

I've never really considered Diablo a good example of a RPG, never understood why it is so popular. Anyway I think what you are looking for are games like Planetside, Face of Mankind and World War 2 Online. Of those 3 I would recommend WW2 online.
No annoying animated GIF here!
Did a quick search and found this list for you.

hey, I'm on the same page as you. I've already tried some of the MMORPG/FPS games and can tell you a little about em..
Neocron - fun cyberpunk/futuristic mmorpg with an fps interface. it's not an mmofps though. it's hard to explain, the engine is still "you targeted this" or "you didn't target it and missed". you can't just aim a pistol at a rat and fire, you have to establish a "lock", and at that point, once you fire, the amount of bullets that hit per burst depends on your skills and your weapon stats.. so, some bullets will magically heatseek to your locked target (even if you aim away really quick), and some will magically divert diagonally and miss completely. it's weird. anyway, I played it for about a year and it's pretty fun. I stopped playing when Neocron 2 came out, which is the same game as Neocron 1 (in fact run on the same servers), with 1 new town and new player models, and a higher monthly fee. it's fun, but the release of NC2, plus the fact that PvP is pretty much level based made me stop playin. Worth a try though. It was fun for a long time for me.
Endless Ages - fun-for-a-while mmorpg with true FPS combat. you can simply aim at something and shoot. plenty of monsters to kill and loot, with a futuristic/sci-fi atmosphere. unfortunately, the PvP is again highly level-based (there are some weapons that create a "damage zone", shaped like a huge cylinder, that does the same damage anywhere in that cylinder. so for example, someone can hit you with UberMegaNukeGun directly and do 300 hp damage, killing you in one hit OR they can shoot the wall 40 feet behind you, and deal 300 hp damage to you.) The PvE and exploring will be fun, especially if you have friends to play with, but dont expect much out of the PvP.
PlanetSide - Pretty cool futuristic/sci-fi true FPS combat game with vehicles, mechs, tanks, aircrafts, armored suits... bunch of stuff. The hit detection seems great, and even shows an orange circle on your crosshair if you make a hit. There are huge continents to battle on, with lots of bases and towers to capture. I played it for a little bit, but the game felt empty to me, because you'd battle and battle for outposts when your faction has more players logged on. Then when the other faction has more players logged, they'd battle and battle to get those outposts back. there is no real point to capturing bases because they dont really do anything... except for fun I guess. (in Neocron, certain bases gave certain advantages to skills, like a Laboratory gave INTelligence boosts to researchers... which aided in crafting/researching and stuff). Worth a try.
GunZ the Duel - this isn't really an mmo, although you do have levels and level-restricted equipment, which is kinda lame. the GREAT thing about GunZ, is that a "level 1" CAN beat a level 50 or something, if they're REALLY good. there isn't a big connected world in GunZ, but instead there's individual servers with individual rooms (single arenas) like counter-strike. This game was really fun, but I quit when my main character got deleted due to hackers. At that point, there were a LOT of hackers doing whatever they want in GunZ, and no one to stop them (in the english version). It might be sorted out now, they mightve got rid of the hackers.. I dunno. Worth checking out.
These are the main ones I played.. hope it helps a little.
