good class suggestions for a noob? :P

I had purchased the game a day ago and i havent got around to playing it yet :(,but i have been checking on the internet about some info on all the classes, 30 classes! lol, i hadnt checked them out yet but i soon will, but could any of u point me in the right direction for now?

i would like a fast dmg dealing melee class, with spells, if possible, and if not i would look for a class that mainly concentrates on dual weild and fast attacks, but with a suitable amount of health and armor to go wiht it. any suggestions?

Well, There are a few things to keep in mind when looking for your first class.  What are you going for?

Decision 1:  What realm are you going to play?
Albion:  Usually the most populated (not always the case), Lore regarding Arthurian Legend
Hibernia:  Leans a little toward the casters in general, usually middle ground for population, Lore
        regarding Irish/Celtic legend.
Midgard:  Usually lower in population (not always the case), Lore revolving around Norse Mythology

    Route 1:
Looking to get to 50 ASAP, want to have a little fun on the way.
For this I would say go with one of the Healer/Fighter type classes with buffs.  Depending on what realm you want to play in I would choose as follows.
Albion:  Cleric, Has good buffs and also has Smite line for some caster action, easy to get groups but
not the most activly aggressive class.
Hibernia:  Druid, Again good buffs, and some limited offensive spells.
Midgard: Shaman, with a conc based end buff a played shaman is like gold, cave is good for the caster
        in you for offensive spells.
The problem with this route is that none of the above classes can spec in a weapon which leaves you in the healer/caster realm,  But if you just want to get a 50 ASAP these are good classes with which to get that goal.

    Route 2:
    Tank/Caster hybrid
Albion:  Paladin or Reaver, Both of these classes are melee fighters with some sort of casting ability.
Paladin:  Their spells come in the form of chants, ON/OFF continuous spells and a few others.
Reaver:  Probably more of the Hybrid you are looking for, melee with offensive spells
Another of note is the Minstrel, good class for soloing but kinda complex for your first toon.
Hibernia:  Champion, Good melee with offensive spells.
Midgard:  Thane/Valkyrie:  I'd suggest a Thane but they may be Flavor of the Month (FotM) since they
recently got some changes that made Thanes a bit more powerful.  Valkyrie's have some group
buffs vs. Thanes just having self buffs and you must have a female character.
I think these choices are closest to what you want.

    Route 3:
    Dual wield character
Albion:  Mercenary or Infiltrator, Infiltrators get stealth as well.
Hibernia:  Blademaster or Nightshade, Nightshade stealths.
Midgard:  Berzerker or Shadowblade, Shadowblade stealths.
I wouldn't reccomend any of the stealthers as your first character as it is very difficult to level these characters solo due to their mature.

All in all I'd reccomend either the Reaver, Champion, or Thane as your first character if you want to go melee/caster hybrid.  But that's just my two cents worth.

Nice post Echani, but you kind of ignored what the person was asking for except for about 20% of your post.

He was asking for a quick melee damaging, preferrably duel weild class that if possible has some casting to boot.

In that case I would suggest all the duel weilders to you. You have the Mercenary, Blademaster, and the Berserker. If casting is a big deal, then I would suggest the Friar. In my opinion the Friar is an easy enough starting class, whereas a Cleric, Druid, and Shaman's are not.

It's always fun choosing a new class and reading up on them when you first start out. I miss the newness DAOC had. I wish you the best of luck. The best advice would be to suggest that you read the character class descriptions and to choose a realm whose lore you like the best.

Your dual weiding tanks would be Mercenary, Berserker and Blademaster.

Your offensive tank/casters would be Reaver, Thane and Champion.

    1.  Play a Vampiir in Hibernia.  You are a melee class that does not need to be buffed.  You can also cast defensive buffs on yourself and offensive spells during combat.

    2.  You could play a dual weilding class in any of the realms.

I like Midgards Skald, u can cast very usefull spells and do meele damage and for me a 2h hammer can be devastating. I never have trouble finding a group either because Skalds are always wanted ), in rvr I have killed Vamps,Reavers u name it a Skald can fight it. I have been killed alot also but I must say the Skald is a fun class to play.

Don't forget Valewalkers! They get Scythes, weird buff combonations that eventually net them the equivalent of Reinforced armor even though they are in cloth, best hybrid melee damage, and have castable lifetaps as well as an instant snare and DoT. Sure they need work, but they're getting fluff next patch that is sorta an improvement. Regardless, damn cool.

    Dark Age of Camelot/Guild Wars

    DAoC: Arrawynn--37 Sylvan Valewalker--Gareth
    Aryne--23 Elf Eldritch--Gareth
    Serenadia--17 Elf Blademaster--Gareth

Guild Wars: Summoner Jiro-- 8 Ritualist/Monk
Mila Mandylion-- 5 Necromancer (soon to be Necro/Mesmer)

    Valewalkers are totally underated!

A hybrid is a good starting point because you get to try casting and melee.

Take it from a fellow noob.

A melee class with spells then you are looking at a hybrid. The only hybrid class I think meets your criterion, fast damage dealing and dual weild with spells, is the Midgard savage. Nobody has mentioned this class. It's the only one that I can think of that has everything you are asking for.

    Hi !

i am thinking about coming to DAOC to and i already took my realm, i ll go for midgard . . .

but can you explain why i should take a female char in the case i choose to go for a "Thanes" ?

    Thanks and Nice Explanation :)

    edit,

are Valkyrie avaiable on trial period ?

    Text From www.darkageofcamelot.com/about/classes.php

The Valkyrie is a female avatar-only class who specializes in both melee and magic to damage her enemies. They can use swords, shields, and spears, and they have special styles in each which are available only to them. Their magic line uses primarily Cone Area Effect (CAE) spells which affect every enemy in front of the Valkyrie who is in range of the spell.
This class is only available to Catacombs users.

I think what he meant was; to be a Valkyrie you must be feamle. It is a female only class. In Norse mythology The Valkyrie were Odin's handmaidens who conducted the souls of the slain to Valhalla. The name Valkyrie means choosers of the slain. The Valkyries task was to choose the most heroic of the fallen in battle and carry them to Valhalla (hall of the slain) to become Einherjar. Einherjar were the spirits of warriors whio had died bravely in battle. Einherjar means outstanding fighter. Odin required these outstanding warriors to fight at his side at the preordained battle at the end of the world, Ragnarok (fate of the gods) where Odin would battle the evil trickster god Loki and his armies of Jotun (giants) and other monsters.

Edit - Catacombs is part of the trial, so yes you should be able to play one.

Catacombs is not part of the free trial and the valkyrie class is from that expansion.

It didn't used to be but it is now. See Elnator's stickied post at the head of this forum on how to go about getting the trial with the Catacombs client.

Edit: Apparently the Cats engine and graphics are part of the trtial, but not the features it seems so no Valkyrie as you state.

Apparently they aren't playable in the trial even with the Catacombs client. Try a Thane for the free trial.

The catacombs engine is part of the trial but I'm not 100% sure the catacombs classes are available in it...  it's been a few months now and I THINK they were but may be mis-remembering.

I do know that the Catacombs classes are only available to certain races.  What race were you trying?  And were you set to be female?  Only females can be a Valkyrie.

I'm sorry for my ambiguous prvious post.

Valkyries are the class that must be Female, not Thanes.

They are only available to Catacombs/Darkness Rising/Epic Edition users.

The 14 Day free trial includes the Catacombs Engine now but not the same functionality ( I may be mistaken and please correct me if I am)

So, if you are planning on trying this game out with the 14 day free trial then you cannot become a Valkyrie anyway so it doesn't matter which gender you choose at character creation.

However, if you have purchased one of the above listed games then you can make a Valkyrie and I do suggest that you pick up the retail Epic edition, only costs $20.00, saves you tons of download time, and comes with one month free.  But that's just my 2 cents worth.
