the only games that are almost free and you dont have to download are java games (browser based)
the best of them is runescape
When I had dial-up, If I wanted to get a game that needed dial-up I used to tell me friends to download it for me and burn it on a C.D. then I would just install and play

Well, beggars can't be choosers.
I've got some projects lines up right now for the site that I'm doing, but once they are done, I'll be doing complete reviews on every single free MMORPG I can find. Why? Because every day we get at least 5 posts asking for "good" free games.
I will warn you, judging from most of the free games I've played, most will rank around a 5.0 or lower. It is true, you get what you pay for.

imho I think anyone new to mmorpgs should start with Anarchy Online, steep learning curve but it really is one of the best free mmogs. I was going to suggest Shadowbane, but its future is largely unknown.
Does anyone know if AO will include Shadowlands for free too when Lost Eden is released or is that a rumour?
I agree, quality just doesn't come for free. if the whole 50$ + monthly fee is too much, then start by looking for MMORPG's that only require a monthly fee, such as Ragnaok Online, or Saga of ryzom ( I think this doesn't require client cost, but not sure). its better to pay a little and have a lot of fun then play for free and hardly have any fun, entertainment is NEVER a waste of money.

If you don't like Sci-fi, your choices are more limited.
The games that come closer to free is Guild Wars, although you need to buy the client.
