Do betas usually wipe their servers before they go comercial?

I have attempted to try out a game called Ferentus, and this game is in its beta stage. Their forums say all accounts will be wiped when their final version comes out.

Is that usually a general rule? Or are their any that allow chars to father over.

I would hate to work on an account only to have to start over again.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks

yes. most companies wipe the game data before P2P starts (after Beta period...).
however ive seen a few games companies who didnt wipe anything when went P2P. usually they just added new server for those who dont want to play in the "beta" server. which lets ppl enjoy both worlds - keeping their characters or start fresh (but usually it doesnt happen).

I believe that sometimes it really important to do that and sometimes its not - it really depends on the game and how long it was in beta.

I agree with sunflame on this one.

Yes, most games do, for pretty obvious reasons... who wants to play a game where everyone else has a massive advantage over you because they played 6 months before the game came out?

But on the other hand, some games, like Silk Road, didnt wipe, because there is no difference between Open Beta and game (usually a sign of a bad game, but shh I didnt say that ::::18::)

The only wipe in Silkroad was the Alpha wipe. Then when beta started was a horrid lag fest as everyone came in at once to try to work on being the first to 20 or whatever lol.

Some games will actually wipe at various phases of beta too, however this is usually only true if there was a problem in the last beta phase, such as n00bs exploiting something too hard or too many people with dupes and what have you. Generally speaking all games will wipe the beta upon release, however as was stated above sometimes they keep a private server available for beta players to keep playing seperatly from the new players just starting the release version.

I think that games should always wipe the servers after beta. For one, it will give everyone a fair chance to choose the server and name of their characters that they want. Also, it will let people use names of people who tried beta and didn't like it then left.

In Lineage 2 they didn't wipe the servers after beta. All this causes was a massive advantage to beta players, and mass ebaying to catch up to the higher lvls.

The point of a beta is to determine the flaws in the game and improve it before launch, it is not for people to level up their characters before the game launches because that is unfair to anyone who buys the game on release. I remember the thrill of leveling with everyone else in EQII it was amazing and fun because no one was an extremely high level. If you start with a high level it takes away from the fun of trying to beat other people to the punch and gives unfair advantages. That's why companies who don't reset characters at launch dont get very far in the mmo industry

there are games that didnt wipe and still come out on top...like lineage 2, they wiped CB but not OB, as they held a competition on whos the first to get lv40 and the guy won an alienware comp....Shame did it in 1 and a half weeks....god damn that kid lol

anyways it all depends on the game, if the endgame content is vast then it really doesnt matter

I guess I have to agree. http://images.mmorpg.com/images/emoticons/emt_bigsmile.gif It makes the game more fun if there's no unfair advantage. But I guess not all games who don't reset their characters won't become popular. But the REAL purpose is to find all the game's flaws before it's release like the other guy said. But I guess it's alot more fun if you participate in the Beta because you know the game better and it'll be easier when new phases of the game are introduced. But the flaws might be abit distracting sometimes. In any case, it'll be more advantageous to EVERYONE and not just to the Beta players of the game if the characters were to be wiped :)
