If Red Bedlam delivers a sandbox style game with in-depth gameplay, a polished launch, and good DEV/Customer communication (which it seems it already has), they are gonna be in a position to gain a large portion of the currently spurned SWG playerbase. Tack that onto the fans of Roma Victor, and other gamers looking for a sandbox style game, and I think they may have a winner.
Most importantly, Red Bedlam, be the anti-SOE! Learn from their disasters lol.
Anyway, my brother pre-ordered this game, and I'm definetly gonna buy it once it launches. Roma victor!
Comments
Yea it could be. It could also be complete garbage.
I guess we will have to wait and see..
From what I have read here and at the roma victor forums, there will be quite alot of
SWG vets
Old UO players
Completely new fans
I would come under the completely new fans section. I played SWG when it was first released but only for about 3 months (couldnt afford the monthly fees)
I really cant wait for Roma Victors release.

Yep, that's my only concern also. Three months is not a long time and goes by like a summer, before you know it, its over.
However, when people working as a close team share a common interest and work all day and night long until they pass out and spend every day working on something they can accomplish a lot. A small company has the motivation to do such a thing when it directly benefits the partners.
A large corporation, on the otherhand? Employees are only collecting their paycheck and most of them are doing just enough to get by, without someone getting on their case. The motivation is reversed. Many try to earn their paycheck for the least amount of work and time possible.
That's not to say that either cannot make a good game, but the innovation usually comes from the small company.
The developers have also said that they will not release an unfinished game. I agree with this stance. If they have to, its better to reschedule than putting something out that is not ready.

Another big difference between RB and the big companies...they get paychecks.
I'm hoping to get my first paycheck since July 01 for helping with these games. KFR also hasnt had a paycheck from his company since 2000.
In fact, I think only 4 or 5 guys on the team are paid when we have money to do so. Actually, here's RedBedlams structure with a bit about the people there:
Management (all on board for around five years - all unpaid):
KFR - See Jupiter.
RJH - Business Director (full and part time as needed)
NGW - Communications Director (part time)
Development (all on board for around 2-3 years - some have occasionally been paid as much as we could afford, whenever we could afford it):
Jupiter - Producer, Project Lead, Architect, Lead Designer, Programmer etc. Full time since the start.
Vulcan - Lead Client Programmer & 3D Engineer. Full time.
Neptune/Faunus - Lead Server & Tools Programmer. Full time.
Mercury - Lead 3D Artist. Sometimes full time; sometimes part time.
Apollo - Audio Lead & Composer. Full and part time.
Mars - Animator. As and when needed.
Additionally there are a few other goodly writers, artists and programmers that have also dropped in to help from time to time.
Consultants:
PJH - Virtual Economist
AJT - Server kernel & Tools Programming
Dr Richard Bartle - Virtual World Design
LG - Communications & Design
Community Support:
Kanoth. Community Relations Manager. Unpaid hero of the forums.
And of course the Prefects, Moderators and countless contributers that make this project both possible and worthwhile. They'll all feature in the game's credits eventually.
Partners:
Finally there are all the third party companies and organisations that have worked with and partnered with us. Some in particular have gone well above and beyond their obligations to help us out, for which we are all extremely grateful.
The word 'passion' means both suffering and devotion. I think it is therefore entirely appropriate to say that RedBedlam is made up of a very passionate bunch of people. Anyone and everyone that cares about Roma Victor owes a great deal to the dedication, enthusiasm and talents - not to mention sacrifice - of those listed above.

take a look at the Rv forums and see how often KFR is on now. Does coffe even work on him anymore?
To RBL:
You know, I like Roma Victor for what it is presenting. It's historically accurate (or very close to it), there aren't any elves or dwarves, there aren't any uberweapons, it doesn't have levels or classes, it has an in depth gameplay, it's very community driven, the devs are down to earth and seem to listen to the community,...
Most importantly it's not been done before, it's ambitious. Most of the other mmorpg's I've played could't even keep me interested for two weeks. I had the feeling of: played one, played them all.
If Roma Victor delivers on the release it will most certainly be a breath of fresh air and that's what's needed becouse most mmorpg's don't seem to be doing it for me.
I said it before and I will always say it.. rv is not for 90% of mmorpg players. I hope it grows slowly and does well, but it will never be an uber blockbuster like wow or swg , however like both of those games, maybe roma victor will bring in NEW people to the mmorpg community that never played them before. And no doubt if RV does well we will see more of its type.

I totally agree with Ferox.....Roma Victor is not for most players....reason being we faced the facts that this game isn't made to be easy....its challenging, can take a week to learn...didn't take me that long, but it probably will for other players....but most of all, the ingame graphics are mainly actual photos of actual items that exist. Even the character models are made from real people images. Thats why they look a bit weird.
Even the armours.....it shows in the screenshots that the graphics are taken from photos or whatever.....but still there is the room for improvement, so patience is needed on the graphics part. Though I must admit, there are some things you see in the screenshots that do capture your eye, like the details of the gladius sword....incredible!
Anyway, graphics are just another reason. We all know there are the players who hate loosing loot, the players who love magic and fantasy based games only...the players who love sci-fi games. Roma Victor is aimed at a few specific types of players....including the hardcore pker types players and anybody who loves crafting in a game will absolutely love Roma Victor for its crafting system....Role Playing in Roma Victor will be one of its top assets, but that will be mostly appreciated by fans of Roman History mainly...like myself. You can expect to find a very mature friendly community in Roma Victor, and you will feel very welcome on your first visit.
I don't know what to put here yet.
I don't know how good the crafting system can be if there isn't a wide variety of craftable items. I think that the strictness to historical accuracy will be a downside for the game in a lot of ways. I think a lot of people will lose interest in a game with only a few weapons and clothing /armor items. Maybe my perception on the variety of items in the game is wrong, but it is based on the info they have released and the screenshots I have seen.
I also think graphics quality is more important than the game's hardcore fans want to admit. Sure, you can say it your lowest priority, but it is still a priority. If there are 3 potentially good games coming out and two have graphics that far outshine the third, I might not ever get a chance to see if the gameplay is any good. I do understand that this is a small development team, so maybe they should look for some help wit the graphics issues they have. I mean, if 200 oblivion mods can find people willing to work on graphics for free, then so can RV. Better yet, how about an open submission policy for models and textures, with the usable content being exchanged for in game currency. i don't know really.. obviously i am not a game developer, but i do know what i like. And i hope the developers haven't actually convinced themselves that graphics don't matter to most people.

Well, just to let you know about crafting within Roma Victor.....maybe 10% of the items are weaponry and armour. That should give you a clue how vast the crafting system really is.
Did you know you can craft your own house, your own everything. Well practically everything. Most tools, even stoves, clay overs or whatever are crafted by players. And there are going to be around atleast 30 crafting skills I think. Well there are a lot, and too many for just one player to handle. I hope that changed your mind about the crafting system. Weapons are limited to what really existed, but there are still many.
As for graphics....they are of lowest priority to change, because this game is far too complex to worry about the graphics. If RedBedlam had the time to waste on graphics, they would, but they see them as something that can be easilly done and invested on later on I believe. Well thats my say, they said it a different way. They intend to step up the graphics, but if you didn't already know....those screenshots you see, are graphics set to extremely low resolutions, and very low graphic details.
There is a screenshot, somewhere....its the only screenshot I have seen with the ingame graphics turned to high, and they are quite impressive. Not the best, but they are nice. I for one am not for graphics....my reason is simple, graphics will slow this game down. There is so much freedom given to the players, that some areas maybe too dense with detail in one location, which can slow down fps...and I would rather have great fps, rather then low fps for good graphics. If the graphics are improved to make character models sharper, and the game world clearer, without hindering fps that much, then I am all for it. I have a good computer with a good graphics card, so I can't really say upgrading my computer at the very moment would help improve refresh rate.
Anyway, I hope you have second thoughts.
I am excited about the crafting system, and the ability to build and own structures. Those were the main things I loved about SWG, and things that made it really hard to leave that game... long after they broke most of the gameplay. I will definitely be there to check it out when the game launches, but I can't help feeling like slavishly sticking to historical accuracy can come at the expense of gameplay. I guess we will see when it comes out.
As far as graphics go, I wouldn't expect them to be the absolute highest end stuff. I know everyone is saying they don't have time, or it isn't their choice of aspects to focus on... but I think it really comes down to the fact that this is pretty small project in terms of manpower. They aren't going to end up with a game that looks like oblivion with a small, mostly unpaid staff. But then again, my machine won't run oblivion so i have to edit the ini file until the graphics aren't much better than DAoC. I don't feel like graphics are the most important thing. Since leaving SWG the games I have played the longest were AO and DAoC... not exactly stellar graphics on those two... but I honestly have to say they both look better than the screenshots we have seen from RV. Most of the shots they have out show a pretty flat mostly barren landscape with an odd looking sky in the background.
Graphics aren't everything, but they do matter. I'm sure the people making the game are aware of that, I think the honest answer to the games graphics is probably to say they are doing the best they can with the resources they have. i also think that response leaves less room for argument and criticism than saying, graphics simply aren't important.

I agree with you whole heartedly! Listen, please be aware that this game is aimed to be a virtual world, where it will be a head ache to die, to travel and to start in a trade. Its not a simple MMORPG where everything is provided for you. You have to work to get what you want. What will be lots of fun and very competitive though is the combat system. It is very good, real time based, and includes a lot of strategy. I can't stay going into detail but there is no HP....if you are hit in the head with a sword and you have no protective armour....chances are you are going to fall to the ground and be in the position to receive a death blow which will send you to the after life in Elysium.
Its not entirely realistic....going to the afterlife in Elysium is just a belief of the Romans during that time. This game does include non-realistic stuff, which was believed to be true by the Romans.
This game is very hardcore!
I don't know what to put here yet.
RedBedLam are clever.
---------------------------------------
No Userbar here, sorry to disappoint.
While the game may very well be fun and revelutionary in it's vison, if I cant stand to look at it while playing for 5-8 hours a day, I wont play it at all. While game play and contenet are very important to keep players, graphics are what help draw players in IMO. Sorry, just got to like what I am looking at.
But the premiss of the game look like it could be entertaining. But right now the screen shots I have seen are going to keep me from exploring the game. hopefully by the time there is an open beta they will have been updated.
I need to say something about Roma Victor's graphics, and I'll be honest....they aren't going to improve before release. If anyone thinks that, then they are mistaken. The graphics will remain as they are, for a number of reasons.
Only one thing I have noticed and I am relieved about, when analysing the screenshots. They were taken while the game was in 800x600 (at most) resolution. Image what they look like at 1024 by 768....or 1280 by 1024. I remember BF2 set to (800 x 600)....found it to see anything.
Anyway...I am sure that RedBedlam know graphics are a priority. But they did enough to make the game clear for the players to see everything properly. Unfortunately they are working on a low budget, and can't employe the best of graphics designers and such.
We have to give them the credit for making a game which has so much innovation, and since I know that a very large majority of the commercial testing team is very still very much into the game, I know that Roma Victor will have a strong enough player base for this game to be supported. They have atleast 1500 players who pre-ordered this game, with all the other commercial testers who were chosen by RedBedlam to test the game. I know people will be purchasing Sestercies through the verm (I will be one of them), and other people will be purchasing the game to see what the talk about this game being so great is all about.
Unfortunately I will take a quote from Ferox, which is very true....Roma Victor is not for 90% of the MMO community. But it still has its own qualities, which exceed any other MMO's, so it shouldn't be labled as garbage.
I don't know what to put here yet.
