Stephanie Shaver, Hero's Journey Designer, is nothing if not colorful. Today, she brings us another delightful developer journal and under the guise of telling us about Necromancers, Wizards and Rangers, she rants about everything under the sun. Hero's Journey developer journals normally appear every other Tuesday exclusively on MMORPG.com.
The wild-eyed finger-waggler in scorched robes. The wandering mystic who smells faintly of salted fish, cloves, and... mystery. The guy who wears robes with more pride than a Scotsman at the Highland Games. Wizards and fantasy go together like peanut butter and chocolate, like angsty hipsters and coffee shops, like otaku and bad hygiene.
Gearknights are to Gearsmiths as Wizards are to the Arcanum. Before the Ilvari showed up and made things complicated, there weren't Wizards in Elanthia -- just a bunch of Human empires that knew magic was out there, but didn't know how to harness it. The Ilvari bridged the gap between mystery and understanding, and things haven't been the same ever since. Would the world of Elanthia be in the state it is now without Wizards? Probably not. Are we better for it? No, but it sure makes the world history writing easier! |

Well except the thing you could be naked there is nothing new that we couldn't expect in first place about those classes. He practialy say ranger will use arrows and have a buddy(pet),wizard will use spells and necromancer as necromancer.Except something new to me bout necro is that "bomb".We will se what that will be.They talk like politicians.Much talk little they say.Heh but im hapy they do talk
So im always wizard class but hey lets see other 6 classes and the abilities and the dual abilities ufffffff my brain hurt.So much choices.I like it.
Take the Hecatomb TCG What Is Your Doom? quiz.
ROFLMAO!!! That was one of the funniest descriptions of character classes i have seen in years, well done! Especially loved the Necromancers. hehehehheh
I can not wait to dive into a world created by someone with a great sense of humor and finely twisted perspective.
*salute
Cant wait for the next journals!
Did anyone else notice that they mention wizard's will be able to manipulate time? That's gonna be fun...
(Burian Wizard/Gearknight for the win!)
Hero's Journey Rangers get a wide variety of bow-shootin' styles. Their abilities include things like arrow flurries, weapon disarms, tracking, and immobilizations.
This pleases me greatly.
Rangers may also choose to summon a forest buddy to follow them around and gnaw on the bones of their victims.
This... not so much.
Well, if we get enough freedom I'm sure I can just opt out of that pet and still be effective. Hmm, Ranger/Rogue or Ranger/Wizard. I think I'm leaning toward Ranger/Rogue. Wizards sound more like nuke, nuke, nuke than any utility other than ports.
(Ooh, they fixed the preview button.)

hmm I wonder if you take two pet classes if it'd be possible to make a hybrid pet from the two?
Robot skeletons, Zombie bears, Cy-dogs ?
Might be interesting.
<ponders till the next journal

When you do something right people won't be sure you've done anything at all.
While some of Stephanie's jokes were funny, I find these dev diaries have way too much personality. You can easily turn people off to your game if you're trying to be "zany." Humor is way too subjective. Just give us the facts and let that impress and entertain. Reading these articles make me feel like i'm talking to a friend from highschool and not that I'm reading something by the lead designer of a company. And when distilled, there's too little information left.
I like Stephanie's presentation style. The typical developer interviews offer little in the way of insight, and lots in the way of spin; Stephanie gives a bit of information and packages it in a very funny, very human way. It's infotainment. It's entertainfo. It's worth reading just for the chance to make your coworkers wonder why you're laughing while they're banging their heads against their monitors.
