Upcoming update info

MrArchyMrArchy Member Posts: 643

I've starting seeing posts here at MMORPG.com in which ppl are excited about the upcoming publish list SOE recently released.  There is a certain hysteria beginning amongst a few new player, and a reality check is in order.

First, the coming update to Smuggler.  SWG began on June 26, 2003.  Players have been calling for a smuggler revision since around July 26, 2003.  SOE has been promising it since about August 26, 2003.  Hasn't happened yet.  In 3 years of promising this, SOE has completely and totally failed to deliver it thus far.  My personal opinion is that the Smuggler update will never happen.

As for the updates to other professions, let me remind you again of the past.  SOE has revised most of the professions numerous times since release.  After almost 2 years of tweaking the profs, SOE realized they had instead hopelessly screwed it up and instituted the CU (I disagree with SOE at this point, but that's mox nix now). Another way to say it is that SOE had failed to consider the effects of the changes they were implementing upon gameplay and caused the imbalance they purportedly fixed with the CU.  Of course, after the CU, they went back to tweaking the profs.  I remember around last July or August they tweaked Creature Handler in a wonderful way - we could learn pet skills, train our pets, etc.  Now that I'm in WoW, I realize they just blatantly ripped of WoW Hunter pets.  SOE also tweaked Squad Leader, Jedi, BH, etc.  And by Nov 15, 2005, they again realized they had hopelessly screwed it up.  Ultimately, the agency who deserves the blame for the failure of both the original version and the CU version is SOE.  In around 3.5 years SOE has, in my opinion, demonstrated a pattern of ill-considered game development particularly in SWG (and why LA/LEC/LWhateverYouWantToCallThem hasn't recognized this is beyond me).

Look around the message boards - the coming "updates" aren't updates - SOE is largely reinstituting popular game elements they removed from the game due to the NGE - Jedi bounties are a terrific example of this.  SOE is going to screw up the NGE in the same way they screwed up the original and CU versions.  They've almost never demonstrated an ability to do anything else (ripping off WoW aside - loved that CH update, and at least SOE prepped me for the MMO I left them for).  I invite all new players who find themselves a'twitter at the coming publish information release to conduct an objective review of the 3.5 years of documented development history SOE has already made.  The only reason the CU hit was because of SOE's ill-considered screwups.  The only reason the NGE hit was because of SOE's ill-considered screwups.  The vast majority of these changes didn't work the last two times SOE tried them, so why would they work now?  Unless LA gets smart and yanks the license or SOE folds due to lack of subscriber $$, the NGE will be "fixed" when SOE addresses the "imbalance" with another massive gameplay change and you'll all be screwed again.

I hear that !! why im working to get my boycott site up. First it was guild star destroyers now at these summits its gunboats now. Theyve had the game for 3 years and this is the best they can do is to make the game worse and worse and swear its better despite empty servers. Makes you wonder how many people have to leave before they understand NGE sucks

I think my DNS is messed up, the mmorpg.com I get is different. Mine consists out of flames, whines, rumors, hate and other fun stuff.

But yea, the rest of the post is true.

In my opinion, if development should be aimed anywhere, it should be to those players that have no other game than to produce stuff nobody wants (traders), and those players that have no other game than to give meaningless enhancements to said meaningless crafting game (entertainers).

Smugglers can't smuggle, but at least smugglers can do all the other stuff in the game.  Teaders and ents can't even do that.

Am i wrong in thinking that i have read that Smed plays WOW? I seem to remember reading that somewhere. If that's the case, shouldn't the head honcho of a game really be playing that game exclusively. If he likes WOW so much, why doesn't he go ruin that instead?

    /Rant off.

[edit] to add - smuggler isn't iconic *rant* Han Solo had a bounty on him for not smuggling dangnabbit! No-one in the films ever smuggled.

Smedley and Julio have both confessed to playing WoW in interviews with tabliods and on live TV. However I cannot recall a single occasion where one of them  spoke about the "Star Warsy fun" they've had in SWG. Nor have I heard them comment on how excited they are now that they can "kill/loot/repeat as Luke and not uncle Owen".

I just remember Julio getting bitchslapped by the Obi Wan bug on U.S TV live..................my heart still bleeds for him............honest!

It was a programme called "Attack of the Show" I believe, I never saw it myself. However he was demonstrating (with the help of another gamer) the NGE when the Obi Wan bug occured (Obi Wan wouldn't appear so he couldn't complete the quest). Apparently he was left rather red faced, and it was obvious he'd never done the quest before or he'd have known about the bug.

If I'm not mistaken, AOTS still sucked up to SOE about how good the change was. They also blew off any comments us vets had even after promising a fair and unbiased interview.

That show still caters to any company with enough money to advertise with them.

They are more biased than FoxNews or Al-Jazeera.

If you paid attention to the history of this game you'd know why they aren't going to fix it.

I wanted bitch slap the guy asking the questions, he was so insulting to the people who were piised about the nge. the whole tone of it was "only uber geeks who dont want to have fun and hate change dont like the nge". Even the call ins were like "omg tell me how awesome your game is". -_- I thought this was a gamers network?

Pirrg, there's this thing between your ears called a brain.  I suggest you try using ocasionally.  If you had so much as half a clue, you'd realize that "ancient history" is a lesson that they very likely WON'T fix it now, based on a longstanding pattern of behavior they consistantly show.

The history of the smugglers is a long and depressing saga of big promises that never get fulfilled.  Never.  If you expect a different outcome now, you're on the wrong side of the retarded borderline.

Yeah!  the interview just reeks of PR job.  However, the jewel of the interview is Julio showing off how awsome the game is by trying to make Obi Wan spawn and he doesn't!

Yes NOW THAT was great, so great, hell it was iconic, it perfectly described the game that is SWG.  I personally think Julio sounded like a wuss, but oh well.
