So a Corp that buys ten of these each could probably claim a rather large area in hours.
You consider a 4x4 km or 8 x 8 km area large compared to the size of a planet or moon ?
Let me help you.
Earth .. diameter 12756 km ... Surface Area of Earth ... pi times Diameter squared ... You could have 7.983.231 such 8 x 8 km land claims ... on ONE planet alone.
Have fun
Stop putting things in it's proper content, it will just confuse people...
It makes one wonder why they bother with the max 10 limit though. And why anyone would bother buying it at all since there should be a lot to claim unless you can pick specific areas when you buy it.
However you counting fails to mention that a lot of the earth is covered by water so there probably wont be more then 3 million or so lots and some of those will be very cold or hot.
This is no longer different than Planet Entopia. Which btw also has space travel, ship mechanics and various planets you can go to.
A core difference actually. The difference between forcing you to pay to get to play with it, or being able to earn it.
I remember Entropia selling land claims for 1k$ each, there's no earning that playing the game lol
to be fair, yes someone somewhere has to pay that cash, but you can I believe earn real money in the game, or at least you used to be able to. I'd imagine that it would take a horrendous amount of time or allot of creativity to make 1000$ in that game now though as old and low-pop as it is. I'd bet the land is cheaper now though too.
And then at that point I believe you can withdraw money from the game and turn it back to real cash, so it'd still be real earned money you're blowing... Correct me if I'm wrong, never actually played that game but a couple minutes.
I'd would feel differently if there were not backers who bought ships three years ago and have still not received them. And now they say you can buy land but can't use any store credits in your account. What a nice thank you.

The problem is, we dont know how hard it will be to earn these items in the game. It could possibly be as bad as archeage where you need TS trees to build siege equipment but your chance of getting a TS tree in the game are less than one percent so they see them in the cash shop.

That's not a problem that's speculation. MMO's are well known for RNG loot, something for all that shows until now SC does not have because it's not the fight mob > collect loot type of game, what then makes it based on currency earning rate for most of it at least.
When it comes to earning rates I think we all know how hardcore MMO players get with metagaming for the most profitable/more xp gameplay, always find loops that are constantly getting nerfed all the time gg
This game is clearly one where you can buy everything with real money. Ships, ship equipment, weapons and now land. I bet houses are coming next - that's where the real appeal will be. Land claims are nice all, but digital pictures of villas and space bunkers will sell like hotcakes.

And after houses, they'll sell furniture!

As long as there is content for every kind of player i don't find this a problem. Just like in real world people are not on equal ground, why would a game world be any different. If this was your ordinary FFA PvP game i would call it P2W right off the bat, but with a good design this will be awesome. In role playing games there are no winners or losers. There's only a huge virtual world with lots of stuff going on.
I'm thinking of a fantasy MMO where wealthier players could buy castles and titles, and have a totally different gameplay from a regular one. Instead of a lvl 1 grunt following simple quests and orders they could be playing a strategy game involving politics, economy, etc. related stuff as dukes or barons. How cool would that be?
Will Star Citizen be anything like that? Hardly, probably not even close, but it's about time to get rid of the idea that everyone are the same, everyone should be able to accomplish everything, everyone pays the same so they are entitled to everything, etc. I'm sick and tired of games where hundreds of players are heroes and legendary and artifact weapons drop like candies. That doesn't make sense in real world and that shouldn't make sense in a virtual fantasy world either.
This could end up being just another money grab that lives a couple of months and is then forgotten, or it could be a definer of a new archetype of MMO genre. Whatever the game will be i'm so glad it's not gonna be yet another WoW clone #5452.

I haven't even paid this game much attention but given I am getting a massive storage update ill have the room to download and install Star Citizen again to give it a try.
I am curious about the whole land thing though and how it will work like infantry and ship combat or is it going to feel like dead space all instanced.
I guess with all the companies receiving so much heat recently CIG felt left out.
But on the positive note, it doesn't come in lootboxes, eh?

Actually, what was it last year around this time? Maybe they do this on purpose before the big sales. Most people see the controversy, check out the fancy art, join the game, and start asking in chat where's the stuff they saw in the videos.
