What's it with SOE..?

DuraheLLDuraheLL Member Posts: 2,951

*Sigh*

Sony Online Entertainment, SOE, what kind of company are they really?

I was reading through this article:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/12/16/tech/gamecore/main1133791.shtml

(It's 10 pages long)

And just started to wonder... how can a company like this still stand on it's feet? A company which spits it's customers in their faces, a company that lies and never give out any real information upon what they are doing, a company that delivers wares that aren't even 60% completed, a company that has more greed than any other company to date, a company that seem to have no idea upon what they are doing, a company which removes every negative critique which is directed upon them to try to convince the crowds everything is ok, who never stops to fix what they have created but rushes out new content all the time.

Seriously? Combine these, and you have SOE. And yet they are doing fairly "fine" due to all the havoc of which they have caused.

I've heard something recently that probably is very clear to many but to me it was a little bit of a shock, I thought the SWG case was bad enough, but then I heard SOE didn't have full rights for EQ when it was released, and then I heard about all awful broken promises that they never finished..! Like that think where you had to quest to unlock Froglok's as a race or whatever it was.

Whatever their hands reaches upon get's all messed up! They really have no idea where they are going and how they are going to work efficiently to reach their goals.

Is it because they are powerful? SONY is indeed not a small company and everyone knows the bigger the more freedom. Just look at Microsoft (And oh god that is awful), they have very crappy products but yet manages to go forward due to all their power. Could it be the case with SOE too?

I seriously doesn't joke they deserve a good fat sue for what they have done and all their ignoring the customers. But imagine the overhaul you would get when they have the power to hire 100'ds of lawyers

I know it has been said everywhere how awful they are but it hasen't gotten to me why many people still even PAY them! If everyone knew precisely how horrible they were, would they still feel ok to pay them? Is it because too few are enlightened? I have seriously given up all hope there ever was for the company and it will be the single most WONDERFUL thing when I will be able to leave them FOR GOOD when I find another MMORPG that I enjoy, currently I have to say that I play EverQuest 2, and it really hurts knowing SOE are behind it. At least now I cannot be surprised when another one of their stupid ideas spawns, and I sure know not to pay for more than a month per time.

Sony BMG are a massive multi-national corporation, they have little to worry about if one of their products flops. Why would a massive corporation with massive funding, listen to its customers when the product only applies to a minority market?  Any revolt from the customers is going to have only a minor impact on Sony.

It's pretty clear in the industry that Sony Online Entertainment has made necessary changes to some of it's online titles in readiness for the launch of the PS3. Online gaming with choice is going to be a big marketing factor with the PS3.

Star Wars Galaxies is a great example of how a MMORPG cannot be customised to fit the console and PC market, it just doesn't work.  But this will be a test project for SOE.  If they can retain a good number of PC gamers along with attracting a large quantity of console gamers to SWG, then they will have proven that PC MMORPG conversion to console works, and I fear many MMORPG's will follow suit to cash in on the console market.

Only time will tell, but we live in a capitalist world where money has a greater value than anything else.

$OE is a cancerous pollip upon the a*** of humanity.

John Smedley is a rotten veruca leeching off that pollip.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"

I just cant realise how stupid they can be, it makes no sence to what they did to SWG. Do they want to loose customers? Did they acually think the NGE would help SWG? this question is like asking who killed JFK...

Besides the disaster that happened to Star Wars Galaxies, I have had no problems with SOE at all, and I agree that Everquest II is great.  Despite the aweful thing they did to SWG, I still have faith in them and will continue to buy their games.  I will never subscribe to SWG again, though (unless they bring back the pre-CU).

The last thing that Sony can afford is for it's very expensive and hard won brandname to become associated with poor products and customer disatisfaction.

I think if Sony was a bit smaller, Mr Sony might have already noticed. SOE should be sold off.

  • Why? because people are buying their products, although people don't need their products, but they're still buying them.

what else? Sony has so many branches in so many places around the world, and they have bagjazillions of products and customers, ignoring few thousands won't hurt.

Sony is clearly trying to position SWG to be able to run on a console for the PS3.  That's really all this is about.

If they pull that off, be prepared to see many other MMOs going the way of so-called "fast-paced" twitch-based combat a la console gaming.

Because once the name Sony gets associated with poor quality, all those branches all across the world, and all those bagjazillions of products they make will all be tarred with the same brush.

What kind of service can I expect from Sony that sells premium priced products?

Is it the company that provides premium quality service and customer satisafction as a priority; and that I can trust when I spend £1,000 on a T.V. set.

Or is it the kind of company that can afford to lose a few thousand customers and doesn't care if the service is poor as long as it makes a profit?

SOE is hardly a big money spinner. Why risk all your other business?

It really irritates me when people post comments which show they don't have a clue as to the topic they are posting about.  Such as the following comment.

"I've heard something recently that probably is very clear to many but
to me it was a little bit of a shock, I thought the SWG case was bad
enough, but then I heard SOE didn't have full rights for EQ when it was
    released,"

The above statement is totally wrong.  SOE had NO rights to EQ when it was released.  They were not even in the picture at the time.  Verant released EQ along with another company whose name escapes me at the moment, but SOE was nowhere in sight.

These "I hate SOE" or "I hate Blizzard" or I hate <fill in the name of the company here> really get on my nerves.  Especially when the posters post information without backup up their claims.

Oh, and sure, Microsoft stinks.   I am assuming the OP is using a Mac or Linux.   Oh, but wait, he talks about SWG, and I don't think SWG was released for the Mac or Linux, so he must be using ....  Microsoft Windows.

What irritates the most? People like you, who nitpick every little thing and brings no comment upon the real purpose of the threads. Who just runs in to bash everything. I didn't play EQ, but my poin was that SOE didn't control the future of EQ. I didn't even say they had rights at all for the game. It could have meant "They didn't own it"

These "I hate SOE" or "I hate Blizzard" or I hate <fill in the name of the company here> really get on my nerves.  Especially when the posters post information without backup up their claims.

SOE have acted like complete shit, no discussion about it, open your eyes and wake up from your daydreaming if you think something else. In reality SOE are shits. If this article doesn't do it for you well there are 100'ds of others which can prove it for you. And why are comments like "I hate company X" going on your nerves when there are REASONS for people to dislike em?

Oh, and sure, Microsoft stinks.   I am assuming the OP is using a Mac or Linux.   Oh, but wait, he talks about SWG, and I don't think SWG was released for the Mac or Linux, so he must be using ....  Microsoft Windows.

This has nothing to do with the subject but I use Microsoft. The whole point was that when in such dominanse as microsoft are in they don't need to smoothen out their products. That was my point with the game and the company too, that they don't feel like they need to fix the game and just release it half-finished.

Um... you might want to check your facts there buddy.  Sony brokered EverQuest, hired Brad McQuaid SPECIFICALLY to make EverQuest.  The studio was spun off during development as a cost cutting measure and as soon as the game was released it was brought back into the company.

989 Studios (Verant's Original Name) was the ONLINE GAMING DIVISION of SOE.  :)  They changed the name to Verant about mid-way through Beta Phase 3.  Then at release the company was 'purchased' (re-acquired) by Sony and placed under the umbrella of Sony Online Entertainment.

A little bit of EverQuest Trivia:  Qeynos (the name of the original City in Beta Phase 1 and still existing in EverQuest2) is Sony EQ spelled Backwards.

Might want to do a little research before posting.  EverQuest was ALWAYS a Sony Product.... ALWAYS.

It's not SOE that sucks, it's the developers of SWG (that work for SOE). One Dev team should not make everyone else that works for the company held accountable for the fact that they alone suck and have no clue as to what they are doing.

All of you jaded SWG players need to get up, dust yourselves off and move on...seriously get over it.
