I think they tried to with cataclysm. I would love a completely refreshed game though. . . mind you the classic servers will be that for me since it has been so long.
I always think I would love a WOW2, but then I realize I have seen it attempted so many times and never got into any of them. If you don't like the current game with the changes and expansions chances are you wouldn't like a new base game from them built with the same philosophies. I get the dream though.
Blizzard got on the MMO bandwagon when they saw how big that could be. They got on the card game bandwagon when they saw how big that could be. MMOs are not where you go now for the next big thing, they could be again one day in the future, but for now forget it.
What are you talking about? MMO is big now .. just look at Overwatch.
Online poker is one of the most popular MMO's and it was created many decades ago. It's actually one of the first MMO's. It's also the most rewarding with most risk involved as well. You have interaction between the community and drama/conflict when you win/lose.
Bottom line, the PvP can be brutal and the loot you earn can be used IRL. Sadly, no one has yet made another MMORPG with these core concepts and just different gameplay yet. Hey, less games people are enjoying it means more of them will eventually come after your loot IRL. So, protect your wives, daughters, sisters, cousins, etc.
They still have more players than any other MMORPG continuing on with what they already have. Also, due to changes in the market WoW2 wouldn't likely capture the peak audience WoW did so could quite possibly be deemed a failure even it did remarkably well compared to most other games released today.
I suspect they feel they are better off sticking with what is comparatively a sure thing, even if that certainty doesn't come with the audience it once had.
$$$$$$?
Yeah, Wow is still earning too much for them to make Wow 2 yet but profit have been constantly going down for a rather long time now so I think they will be in a place where making a sequel is financially a good decision in a couple of years.
Even if they just get half of Wows peak it would be a huge economical success and I think they will get a lot more then just half at least for the first few months. The number of people that enjoyed Wow for a time is actually far more then enjoyed it when it topped just after Catas release, there is a lot of people that played Wow for 6 months+ during it's 14 years existance and I think most of them will at least try a sequel. Heck, many of the fans of other Blizzard games will probably try it as well.
Wow 2 will earn loads of cash, right now they are earning plenty of cash for doing almost nothing though so the smart thing is waiting until the cashful they can keep going with very little work will stop before trying to get a new one going.
Plus, WoW 2.0 already happened pretty much. The game is VERY different than classic WoW. Legion is nothing like even burning crusade was. Very different than WOTLK as well.
If Blizzard was to make an official MMO called "World of Warcraft II", no one that goes to reddit or mmorpg.com would like it anyway. It would be far more similar to Legion, since that is the kind of game Blizzard wants to make with Warcraft.
There'd actually be no point in a second WoW when it pretty much happened through expansions.
I'd rather see a Starcraft MMO myself.
My Skyrim, Fallout 4, Starbound and WoW + other game mods at MODDB:
Why should Blizzard make another MMORPG? It would compete with their biggest revenue game, WoW. It would make no sense to use the same IP, a fantasy-based game, because of the competition issue, but also because there's no indication that there's a large group of MMORPG players that are either not playing WoW or are so dissatisfied with WoW to form an untapped market. That means, there's not enough money in it for Blizzard.
On the other hand, Blizzard's greatest strength is probably developing IPs. There's nothing to prohibit them from pursuing an MMORPG using either an existing or an original IP, as long as it isn't another fantasy-based game. So, I'd expect a SF themed game before I'd expect another fantasy title. I'd be more interested in something completely different, a horror, superhero or even a historic MMORPG. That's the way I think Blizzard is approaching any next MMORPG title.
Only if another company builds a MMORPG that cuts severely into WoW's customers (an actual WoW-killer) would I expect to see Blizzard invest in another fantasy-based MMORPG.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
with brand new graphics............ or Diablo MMORPG.....
shits boring as fuck......
LOL why should they. Because you what shiny new graphics? Is that the only reason you will play a game? Man i swear i feel sorry for game Devs sometimes today. Wow makes tons of money and most people are fine with the way it looks. Then you got those gamer's that will only play a game if the graphics are state of the art or something.

They could make WoW2, but it would have to be sandbox MMORTSRPG. That would be the only thing to make sense imo.
No that wouldnt make any sense as it would confuse the hell out of the current WoW playerbase.
Blizzard has built a dedicated playerbase, they are not going to mess that up with a WoW2 mmorts rpg
of course, a wow mmortsrpg wouldn't be a game for the current wow themepark crowd, but for a new player segment like with heartstone, heroes of the storm and overwatch etc
for a niche crowd for sure like all sandboxes
edit: well there are sandboxes that gather huge crowds...
Talking about games where thousands of players exist simultaneously in a single instance and mechanics related to such games.

While Wows graphics still is acceptable it would take at least 5 years to make a new game and you have to agree that Wow probably will look pretty dated after 2023...
But that is not really the problem, a MMO after enough expansions just get clunky filled with old dead zones no one ever visits and so many levels you ding every 20-30 minutes for the first week. MMOs last longer then any kind of game besides Tetris but they do tend to get less and less fun for each expansion after the 5th or so.
Of course their vanilla project could fix that part...

Because everyone learned by watching EQII. You don't make a game to compete with your game.
Asherons Call 2 was a similar mistake, even L2 never outshined L1 for long. FFXIV, many would favor FFXI as the better game.
Most sequels in MMORPGs have not fared very well, unlike movies or single player games.
These are the ones I was thinking of. These are big, big, titles and in some ways I think that's why the sequel did not work. The only solution I can see is shutting down the old game and transferring everyone to the new game. You can imagine how that would go down with fans.
I think it was a quite smart decision of them to not have a WoW2. From a profit point of view. As mentioned before for any MMORPG which had a sequel the sequel was actually less successfull than the original. Better to just improve/enhance the game you already have for your existing customer base.
But the more relevant reason imo probably is: The market/customers have changed. This is no longer the market of the year 2000-2010. Popular "MMO"s today are Overwatch, Pubg, LoL, Fortnite, Destiny, Battlefield etc. . See any pattern ? People want online games which can be played for half an hour or less. Just hopping in and out having some fun with their friends without much thinking/preparing.
The majority is not interested in MMORPG behemoths and don't care at all for a community, slow progression, bothering to stay on the same level as your friends etc. pp. .
And the big money goes to where the customers are.

Hmm, you are correct, there is a pattern there. Looks as if evil Nazi scientists managed to "win the war" after all.

The problem is that the type of games we play starts to narrow, its like the WoW template, but this is a multiplayer template. If we don't have diversity in gaming it suffers big time. People will leave games sooner, its the same old thing. We need a broad spectrum of games including all those you mentioned to have a healthy hobby.
The only reason WoW is the way it is is because people still pay for it. For example voice acted quests could have been in the game years ago they have the money to do it hundreds times over, why dont they do it? Because they dont need to. Why would they when so many pay for the game anyway. Why would they invest into it when the players are showing them that they dont have to make the game any better than it is (or make another game).
