Ive played alot of mmorgs and this one is by far the most fun. The pvp or (RVR) is meaningfull, and you dont have to do raids for gear to compete. I played it from release untill the ToA expansion and moved on to other mmos. Its why im really looking forward to Warhammer online by Mythic. I really like the way they do pvp.
With the addition to the Classic Servers the Game Play is back to a form that is not too Raid or Grind heavy. The economy of the classic servers (Gareth, Lamorak/Ector) are a great place to start upas a new player or a returning player that missed ToA. Leveling is fast, There are tons of players throughout all levels. Groups are easy to come by and most people are very friendly. Items that are crafted have resonable rates as do the Items dropped by mobs just check out the Market Explororer in the Player Housing Zones.
Gareth has the largest Population for the Classic Servers.
Changes to Crafting are coming soon. VERY GOOD changes.
It will be easier to skill up in your chosen craft and make better items, create items that are desirable to the players, enhanced "Find a Crafter" tools so people can find a crafter.
The Classic Server Game is great and the economy is stable and resonable
Nothing much to add to Behomet's informative post. If you enjoy PvP, DAoC is one of the few MMOs on the market that delivers a mostly satisfying experience. New players to the game will enjoy it for many months, perhaps even years, while vets will continue to pick at DAoC's warts.
Thing to keep in mind, however, is that DAoC is in a state of slow decline. It should still be around for a few years more, but with Warhammer Online coming out next year, the writing's on the wall.
My advice is to do some research on the guilds in your realm and apply for membership in a large, active one that RvR's somewhat regularly. A good guild can really enhance your enjoyment of the game.
Given the Epic Edition can be had so cheaply then go for it. DAoC has seen a bit of a resurgence lately after taking a big hit from WoW. It was on a slow decline but I believe subs are on a slight up again. Anyways with Warhammer not out until Q3 2007 at the earliest DAoC will be very active for a while yet. Also Mythic have stated that a combined sub for DAoC and Warhammer may be available so if this happens DAoC may be around for quite a few years yet.
