Automaton is ready to unveil its upcoming SpatialOS-powered MMORPG pithily titled Project X at an upcoming PC Gamer Weekender in London on February 17th. Project X is said to have its own embedded "battle royale" mode with up to 400 players taking part at once. The team will be on hand during the event to show off game play footage as well as provide viewers with a bit of background on the game's development.

If something conceptually similar could come out and fix some of that... well, I think I could find time for that.
This game doesn't sound in any way to be a direct competitor. We have to await the details but "Battle Royale" mode in an instance with social hubs doesn't sound anything like persistent, massive open world siege warfare to me. It's just taking the social, lobby shooter to a new level.
The 1000 players within a persistent "instance" is likely an area a tiny fraction of one single island land mass in CU. Other terms like "social hubs" and "mission systems" point toward a bloated shooter than an open world mmorpg.
It could be amazing fun, just not not feeling it as even touching within the same genre. I've been waiting to see more SpacialOS games since it's creation. I'm curious about the diversity of games using it over time.
You stay sassy!
This game is a shooter style game with social features and simply capable of a larger map and more people in combat at once than typical social shooters. As I said, it is likely the so called world map this game uses is likely a tiny little fraction of the size of one single island map in CU's open, mmorpg style world.
Every single aspect of Project X sounds different other than you saw it supports more people in combat than normal and uses SpacialOS under it's core engine while CU has something similar baked in theirs.

Seems kind of like the MMO of what we have come to know is going away slowly.
