Automaton is ready to unveil its upcoming SpatialOS-powered MMORPG pithily titled Project X at an upcoming PC Gamer Weekender in London on February 17th. Project X is said to have its own embedded "battle royale" mode with up to 400 players taking part at once. The team will be on hand during the event to show off game play footage as well as provide viewers with a bit of background on the game's development.

Perhaps that's a good sign. We get a lot of games that promise the world and hype over the course of months or even years. It's comparatively interesting when something comes out of obscurity to say "look what we've got."

Yeah, 1,000 people persistent SpatialOS servers with an optional 400 person BR mode sounds neat. Definitely hoping they say more at the weekender.

    It's a MMO-Shooter and no MMORPG.

They can be both. Depends on the RPG aspects if any. Seems more like Planetside 2 though.

Screw this "mode" crap. I want a deep MMORPG where there are no modes, but just a giant world that is rich in Lore, Faction Vs Faction World PvP, etc etc etc etc etc.

Which I'd be okay with. Planetside 2 is a game that I've always wanted to enjoy, but it had some seriously glaring issues. Limited developer support. Poor graphics. Poor optimization. Poor hack prevention. Map design that results in unfun spawn camping fights more often than not. Terrible flight controls. Etc.

If something conceptually similar could come out and fix some of that... well, I think I could find time for that.

Camelot Unchained has some competition. That is basically everything CU has been promoting with regards to large scale battlegrounds. They need to get on the stick or these guys will beat them out the door.

This game doesn't sound in any way to be a direct competitor. We have to await the details but "Battle Royale" mode in an instance with social hubs doesn't sound anything like persistent, massive open world siege warfare to me. It's just taking the social, lobby shooter to a new level.

The 1000 players within a persistent "instance" is likely an area a tiny fraction of one single island land mass in CU. Other terms like "social hubs" and "mission systems" point toward a bloated shooter than an open world mmorpg.

It could be amazing fun, just not not feeling it as even touching within the same genre. I've been waiting to see more SpacialOS games since it's creation. I'm curious about the diversity of games using it over time.

I would call that an MMO.

Could be interesting. I'm very wary that they're portraying their large scale fights as a mode rather than just something that happens naturally in the game though.

400 - 1000 person battles sounds exactly what CSE is trying to pull off with CU. The combat mechanics aren't what I'm talking about. I'm talking about 400+ player battles that look good.

I mean what is RvR but a large instanced battlefield? Not that it matters with regards to how many people can battle at once, but an RvR game isn't a great example of open seamless MMORPG design.

The persistence of this game isn't the defining factor of the moment. Persistence is trivial to accomplish. It's being first to the table with an engine that can handle large scale battles with the numbers they're advertising.

We'll have to see though. Lots of studios have made claims for player concurrency in testing that they couldn't pull through with once live.

I wonder if Amazon will buy them.
Then you clearly no nothing about what sort of game CU is. Also, it's 400 man battles and 1000 players per instance. That alone is different because CU isn't an instance based game.

This game is a shooter style game with social features and simply capable of a larger map and more people in combat at once than typical social shooters. As I said, it is likely the so called world map this game uses is likely a tiny little fraction of the size of one single island map in CU's open, mmorpg style world.

Every single aspect of Project X sounds different other than you saw it supports more people in combat than normal and uses SpacialOS under it's core engine while CU has something similar baked in theirs.

Seems kind of like the MMO of what we have come to know is going away slowly.
