Dark and Light may be in early access, but that doesn't stop Snail Games from treating the project like a live game. In this interview we discuss the Scalding Abyss, the latest big update, and how the project is working towards its hybrid MMORPG/Survival sandbox goals.

When will this game move out of early access, which was supposed to be a year from July, 2017 would have been another excellent question.
"Ok so for the last 4 weeks my server, Knight1 US has been raided by hackers that glitch into bases...even Iron and Manor. Kill tames, break everything, and steal stones...sounds fun right? While I was online they attempted to do this with me, my house and I caught them and we couldn't hurt them...not even 1 point of damage so the best we could do was pick them up and fly them away til they gave up. Oh and they can 3 shot a 4k griffon. Sounds OP for a lv17 player right? We thought so also which why my house and I...and our server (which is one of the largest on the game) filed many reports that went ignored with those OH SO FUN little "We can't tell what we are doing to those people" replies.
So then, the griefers started to pillar the whole map with iron pillars bought from the stores with the money they glitched into our base and stole from us. We reported them with screen shots...for blocking every iron spawn, alot of wild spawns, ect. Can you guess what reply we got? YEP that "We'll look into it" and nothing.
Also so, the griefers house name is "Dead♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥" which is in my screen shots, they decided to pillar around my house so I can't expand it, I suppose the name is ok to post here since the game dev's thought it wasn't offensive enough to do anything about when we reported them. BUT it's ok cause they rerolled to human to beable to steal my houses name...so now we have MY elf house, and the griefers raiding the server under my house name as humans...yay right, sounds like tons of fun and so worth buying this game!?
Even if not for these griefers and the lack of...well...anything coming from the game developer. For pve? You will be plagued with random freezes where wild animals can attack you, and when you unfreeze then you're dead. Freezing while flying in the air and when you unfreeze, your mount sudden DROPS killing you and it. Random rerolling so...lets say you just took 2 hours to tame something, farm something, or build something...server freezes and kicks everyone, then when you log back in. You are 0% in health, hunger, HP...so auto death AND it's 2 hours in the past so you lost that tame, or mats you been farming.
I hope this post helps people save their money, go out to eat or something cause you will regret this buy."

Well I WAS looking forward to this game.. but after reading this.. screw that.. not gonna spend money to play a hackershitfest of a game.
This is why you run private servers and password protect it to just friends and other shit... All of these games have major issues on open public servers.
I really looked forward on DnL pre EA release. It was first announced for Dec 2016. But just at the day, when the EA was to be on steam the devs decided to push back the EA back to July 2017 (date was not said on that day). That was the day when the community broke down. There where some issues before on the discord channel (the biggest community to that time) and many ppl lost interest. So when it came out on July I first did not want to buy the EA. But finally my friends got me to get in DnL.
I had opened a FaceBook Community for German players back in 2016. So I started to build up german community for DnL. I made up a community server, where we had all the 50 slots full at the beginning of DnL. I had a lot Admin stuff to do but it was a fun time. I additionally made up a domain with a forum where I translated every single patchnote and dev update by myself and brought together infos around DnL. I wrote 2 Mails to SNAIL where I asked them for a little support - especially when it comes to copyright things with pics and content I would have to use to build up the comm. I never got an answer- not even an autoreply.
At the day of EA Realease many went wrong and I decided to join the game 2 days after Realease. The state than was surprisingly good. I played ARK many many hours before and found, that DnL was in a better shape on release than ARK was. But with every patch- especially since Sept/Oct 2017 it got worse. Some mechanics that really worked got screwed up. The new content always sounded very good in the patch notes, but what was not mentioned where hidden changes. It always was a mess after a while- some nice stuff came in, and some of the working stuff was screwed for like days. So that no one really could play the game. The vendors in the cities in Archos, which you have to push with donation, nearly with every patch got resettet. So when you farmed a lot to push one vendor to max level with lets say 50k Gold -congrats- do it again. Ice cave- nice, but for like many weeks there was an issue where you could not even enter it, for there was a invisible wall in the entry of the cave. That issue even blocked the new forging mechanics, because you needed ice-shards from this cave to begin levelling it. Screwed!
It all ended up in November. SNAIL back then decided to (1) make Manor structures immune vs nearly any damage from tames- even Dragons and Mythics and (2) they took the only thing left for PvE- the mythic Tames with affordable efford. At that state of the game- mythics could not be tamed with goblin sticks anymore. To get into the ice cave you needed to grind, grind, grind the dark event you can trigger in DnL. With normal animals you would have lost many of these in the event for damage of dark creatures was raised and their resistences too. The way to go where mythic tames. Even then you needed lots events to trigger before you had a complete set of legendary blueprints for even get the chance to ENTER the cave...not sure to get to the end- because the cold resist you needed back then at the boss was redicolous (not to be said you had to where a whole set of sulfur-cloth to battle the boss). So best chance would have been to craft some really really good legendary sulfur armor and then forge it several times to grade it up - which also is not a task you can do in DnL without a lot of preparation. And when you dare to die at the bosfight...do ALL the crafting/forging again. See for taming a mythic animal in DnL you first have to find one. Then you needed to lock it up somewhere. After that you had to be near it for several hours. First maximum was somewhat 24 hrs - later max was 10 hrs. So you sat 8 hours next to this animal, before it transfoms to the mythic. DnL has survival aspects- so you can not just place your character near and go shopping- it would probably die from hunger/thirst or sth else. Best was to sit down and binge watch with an eye on the game. After that you (back then) brought it down with goblin sticks. You needed a lot of them and gobins where rare that time because Snail screw up the spawes for aggressive animals and also screwed up a lot of creatures that where not aggressive before so that these got spawned aggressive too. The wildlife wiped all the little goblins from Archos. So after collecting sticks for hours and days you finally destroyed all the sticks on a mythic tame. No problem, when you had enough. Not to mention, that during such taming process you although perhaps died some times when the creature got to hit you. When you where lucky your body (with the goblin sticks) did not glitch thru the map -we did not have luck. Maybe this whole process was "to easy" for getting a mythic tame. But to change it- the only thing that worked in PvE - at this state of the game, was the end for the last bigger german servers together with the fact, that even these mythic tames where not able to damage a manor in PvP. Even building a Manor was in parts a joke - some of the manor parts did not snap on others so these where complete useless.
The fun went away and players where frustrated, that from all the awesome stuff in the game you nearly could do nothing. Because the way there was full of buggy mechanics. Most players left DnL - atm where talking about ~1.000 active players. Worldwide!
DnL is not a bad game. When it runs (one day in the future) as it should I really like to play it again. With working spawns, content and fair and affordable gameplay mechanics it really has the potential to get prior to ARK (for me) but atm and especially how SNAIL is handling it´s community DnL is in pause Mode for me and most parts of the community that wanted the EA to succeed so much.
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

The current crop of survival games all look and play like this because of the success that Rust and Minecraft had. I don't remember where the beginning was with this exact setup of game, but I remember when all my friends all of a sudden got into Rust because it had the guy who made Garys mod working on it. The design of these games seems to really play into low budget developers because you can literally make no story, make no NPC's and just have an open world with minimal interaction other than building and fighting, and get success just off of player interaction. It's strange but it works.
Some of the games do work out the bugs and the issues, ARK over time has gotten a lot better, but I quit a few months ago after another update broke our server for the 50th time, and we had to roll back again. Rust is relatively bug free now too. D&L is getting more of the flack in my opinion because it was slated to have so much more than the other games. It was originally supposed to be an MMORPG, also the game has a lot of really cool ideas, but they just don't know how to implement them or fix the hacking.
