I agree with original poster. I'm a graphics whore. But no new MMO is innovative enough to get me to go back to it.
I did fire up old entropia universe last night for several hours. That was fun. Then I realized that there's almost no point to play that game. It's actually a pretty decent sandboxish MMO but the fact that you can make money out of it, changes my mindset to one of trying to profit. But then again, if i play for an hour, maybe, if i even do profit, i'll be like $1.40. Even though it is mainly negative numbers and losing money. But overall, it is actually a fairly good MMO. It's the real money economy that drives a lot of people away as it should.
I liken the game to a cheap supersexy prostitute with untreated HIV. If you're willing to take the risk it can be amazing, but over time, it will definitely not be worth it.

For once i agree with forum users, there is no such game.
I thought...hoped FFXIV would be that game,a great successor to FFXi but nope.
You have to go all the way back to FFXI just to get an old school game,so it has been 15-16 years since anything good, the only thing we have seen is a few games with nice graphics.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Devs are about gimmicks and luring people in now, they care more about ways to grind money than to create a plausible world. Now devs would be happy to sell you a level 90 player.game and developer integrity is long gone.
Everyone is a sellout for money now, streamers, websites,YouTuber's,developer's,just give them some money and they will hook you up.

Pro tip, it was always about the money.
Developer's have just gotten really good these days at separating players from their money with the least amount of effort.
I'm guessing sometimes they are even astounded and amazed at what gamers are willing to pay money for and how much they'll pay for it at times.
I know this is not at all the MMORPG landscape I envisioned back in 2001 when I first played L1.

Yeah, I made a similar post in that, "can you do P2W or F2P or whatever the right way".
God of business is money. I look at business as I do sharks in the water. If a shark attacks you, you can't get mad at it, you ventured into their territory and that is what they do. Likewise, in gaming, it's all about money (with a few exceptions like Path of Exile imo). You play games nowadays, you are playing into their territory.
I mean, the US gov't revenue is like 60-80 billion a year on stupid lottery. If that's not a pathetic figure and taking advantage of stupid people, I don't know what is. I can't think of a more pathetic way to get money from people other than using gambling.
It's like, when you look back at your life, what did I do? I owned a casino that was designed to fuck people and take advantage of a known human flaw. Great job . This is why I have no respect for people that own or have owned casinos. At least do an honest day's job.

p.s. If I made a game, I would not have loot boxes in it. I'd have rewards for spending money. You spend $100 on whatever shit from cash shop you get item A, $200, you get item B, etc. If you spend $100,000 in addition to an undead wyrm, you can have an NPC in the game with your physical likeness and you get ownership of the company to a tune of 0.05%

Back in those days though, it didn't feel like it was only about money, I'm sure you can agree. But one also has to take into account competition pretty much shaping what we have today. Back then, there was a much smaller fraction of mmos in general to play and most (if not all) were p2p/b2p so the barrier of entry was quite higher (and one could argue the general was quite higher as well in terms of community etc depending on what game you played). 10+ years ago, I remember SE was permanently banning thousands of players/bots/etc in FFXI and also content was rarely "adjusted" to make things "easier" for people. If you wanted to "catch-up" you had to socialize and meet people that were willing to help you out etc. Those times died within 10 years simply because each publisher wants to one-up the other for that small gamer population, thus trying to trade quality for quantity/ease of access. The closest thing the OP will likely get to what he wants in this day-in-age is Pantheon which probably wont be in beta until the end of the year or so.
It's called old school for a reason. It stop trending. By definition old school means no longer popular.
Yeh, it's still a hard a pill to swallow for some. *ducks* Which is perfectly fine though!
See, look at what both of you are saying.
The poor guy is looking for an mmorpg where you actually get to play with other people, instead of a child's playground game.
Er, children normally play together on the playground.
Just saying.....
Also, its difficult to play with others when most everyone has marched off to play other genres, with MinMOs and BR games more or less dominating the landscape.
As you know too well the type of game he's looking for hasn't been made in many years.

This pretty much sums it up. And it's a shame really. I think there's a significant market for a new game that just does some old things well with a new, modern look.
What do you mean by old school gameplay? Vanilla WoW? SWG? EverQuest? Ultima Online?
He means Pac Man
Doubtfull... Way to modern! Pong is what he means, I bet!
I guess I line up with those who doubt there is anything out there. Times where P&P RPG folks made virtual worlds like the ones they imagined at the table are over I fear. As with many aspects professionalism has set in and pushed innovation and dreams aside for business.

And graphics? Realistic or stylized? Eastern or Western?
