I've played EQ2 and WoW, and recently left Eve after the 2 week trial. I coudln't stand waiting 10 minutes to travel from place to place. I actually finished a book while playing.
I'm looking at Anarchy Online since it isn't purely a Fantasy Genre game. Is there any life left in it or should I be looking at something else?

I use to be a player on AO(firefly2000),but I no longer like it .....one of the Big problems I had was the Horrible Lag .....Even with my Comcast Broadband it was so choppy plus it can take awhile to do what you want to do......like going from place to place even if you have a Flying craft and the Pressure of beening in a guild can be a Pain ......

I've played AO off and on for years. AO is one of the most revolutionary MMORPGs ever created in history! Almost ALL the new mmorpgs have copied some ideas from AO. AO is still free to play. Their free trials go back and forth in length from 2 weeks to 1 year. And... YES! There is still plenty of life left in AO!
To everyone else claiming AO is tooooo lagy:
1. Upgrade to a more modern graphics card. GeForce 4 minimum. If you can afford better, go for it.
2. MODERNIZE your MEMORY. 1GB minimum. If you can afford more, even better.
3. Tone down the settings lower. AO leads ALL mmorpgs with the most customizations available for one to play around with. It is possible to play AO on a Pentium 3, with a 400mhz processor! One can for example tone down the view distance from your character to litterally 3 feet away LOL!

Every MMO has copied alot of very core idea's from many other MMO's. The only momumental thing I can recall AO bringing to the table first was instanced missions.

"What happened to you, Star Wars Galaxies? You used to look like Leia. Not quite gold bikini Leia (more like bad-British-accent-and-cinnamon-bun-hair Leia), but still Leia nonetheless. Now you look like Chewbacca." - Computer Gaming World
graphics for the base free game are old and outdates.
missions are a grind. no real reason or contribution to the storyline.
good community and support.
try the game and if you like it add one of the expansion packs for better graphics.
btw...why would AO require a modern graphics card for the base game when the game is like 4 years old?
Game has never been the same since.

You see, every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith

I need 1gb to run WoW almost at high settings and you telling us that you need the same amount of RAM to run AO on minimum? I don't know if AO got a BIG graphic upgrade, but the ones that I saw, were really outdated.
Actually I'm downloading the client right now. All you guys have different views on the game, so i'll just have to try it myself and see if it's any good.
It's time to give it a decent burial, lay it to rest...
and make room for Anarchy Online II!
I used to play AO, and have gone back to it off and on...it's a decent game and a breath of fresh air from endless fantasy gaming.
Biggest complaint I had with the game was managing 3 clusters in each of 10 implants and 15 armor locations and 10 chip slots and 6 peripherals....I felt like a walking Radio Shack and it really is too much "gear" to have to worry about upgrading all the time. There was casual clothing to go to social gatherings (the player radio station Gridstream.org rocks and throws great parties) but it was hard to change clothes since most folks used extreme buffs to shoehorn themselves into gear they normally would not be able to put on unassisted.
Oh and Alien Invasion was a bit nuts. Guild cities littered the formerly wonderful and desolate outdoor zones with huge identical "city blocks" causing huge lag and ruining the look of the game. Hunting out in the rolling desert or trackless forest was very immersive until someone dropped random bits of "city" all over the place. Much of the wilderness hunting in the game was ruined by this.
