Over the course of CWaveSoft and Nexons development of Hyper Universe, I’ve watched their progress first hand of this 2D side-scrolling beat’em up MOBA. With the launch of Hyper Universe still fresh in mind and more appropriately, impressed in my muscle memory imbuing me with a bad case of “controller grip”, does Hyper Universe have what it takes to leave a lasting impression on MOBA loving gamers everywhere? This is our Hyper Universe Review.

How does it compare to Awesomenauts? Are the character abilities more interesting and/or balanced?

As soon as you said side scrolling I stopped reading.  In this day and age, doing any side scrolling game is just ridiculous.

It works fine for Super Smash Brothers.

....this game isn't Super Smash Brothers, though.

I've only played awesomenauts a handful of times, but Hyper Universe feels a little more strategic and less "frantic" if that makes sense.  Abilities are definitely interesting, but balance seems dependent on character, build, and what you're trying to accomplish. Tanking, healing, etc. they all have characters that fit in those roles, and some are just better at it than others.

Some of the abilities are very interesting, and they really fleshed out the characters very well.   Team composition plays a big part too.  It's definitely worth a try.

It's certainly something that requires playtime to grasp.  It ends up working really well, but in all honesty I believe this game would do amazingly well on console.

The reason there is matchmaking for AI matches is that you want other players on your team. If it's you and seven bots, it can easily stalemate if you don't deal heavy damage yourself, as the bot AI isn't aware that you're supposed to kill towers to win.

The impression I get from the story is that there is probably a story there, and it could plausibly even be reasonably good. The problem is that it gives you bits and pieces so out of order as to be incoherent.

So basically, your complaint is that they did something creative. It actually works quite well. It also makes the game controller and/or keyboard friendly, rather than being really heavy on mouse-clicking like most MOBAs.

No, what's ridiculous is insisting that all games should do something the same way. The graphics are very much 3D, and the side-scrolling approach actually gives you a much better view of the characters than the "you'll never actually see your character's face again after character creation" approach of so many MMORPGs.

That is a good point, but in the early days they did give you AI companions or at least what appeared to be some kind of AI companion if matchmaking failed. I don't know if that still happens, but the matches do have timers, so I suppose if you didn't have enough damage you'd just run out of time.

As to the population, this would be one of the best MOBAs on console, especially because, for me, I had to play with a controller, it just feels better. When I used M&K it didn't feel natural.

I like the game, I think its got a fresh feeling for a MOBA, and I hope they consider a broader audience if it doesn't take off like a rocket.  They've put in a lot of work, I'd hate to see it all for nothing by chasing the wrong audience.

They still do give you bots on your team if matchmaking takes too long--and that's a problem.  Occasionally you can be the only human in the game, with the other seven bots basically playing for a stalemate rather than a win.  That can make matches go for hours.  If a game starts with you as the only player in it, the most sensible thing to do is to just leave.

i love the artstyle. If it wasn't a moba I'd be all over it. Have it installed, just dont feel like playing another moba after Paragon. Maybe someday if this one doesn't close down.

It's tough out there for MOBAs.  It gets even tougher when you consider this is a MOBA that departs from the regular style of MOBAs.  I think there's a place for it, but I think at this time it hasn't found its niche.  I think they might get there, but not soon.

I enjoyed the short time I've spent with it.  It helped cement for me though that I just abhor MOBAs.

They all feel artificially long and I feel like i'm battling towers more than players which leads to boring and long matches playing peek-a-boo with towers.

Makes me sad the ONE MOBA I like is shutting down.

They certainly could have added other game modes.  The tutorial was tons of fun, I would have liked to see more missions like that.

I've been playing Hyper Universe as a PVE game doing AI matches.  The graphics are very much 3D.  While you only move in two dimensions, that's true of many other games as well, including most (all?) other MOBAs.  That Hyper Universe doesn't choose the same two dimensions as most other MOBAs doesn't mean it has fewer dimensions.

For a mobile game, it might not be so bad but don't expect huge profits?

As a mobile game it would probably have huge profits.  It might actually even be playable as a mobile game,  but I still think it would do much better on console than PC.
