Without a doubt, World versus World is one of the least updated aspects of Guild Wars 2. Which is why when Arenanet announced yesterday that they were working on a massive overhaul to the server and population balancing systems of WvW, players went into a hype frenzy! This system will take several months to develop, with no ETA as of yet, but is promising to be the biggest change that WvW has ever received.

Always thought that DAoC RvR is/was far superior to GW2 WvW. Main reason was the community you had with other guys of your server and also the share of known enemies.
In WvW this was already inferior as your server was always matched against other servers, so you never really got to know your enemy. And now they also destroy the server WvW community ? Who cares to fight with mostly random people against other totally random people ?

I don't know if this will be enough to save wvw. The game simply isn't built for mass scale pvp.

I think these changes will be good for the overall game mode. However, for vet players that have been around for years, the sense of community loss will sting a bit. But than again, if they really wanted to keep playing together, they could just guild up/ alliance with one another.

WvW should be about guilds vs other guilds. I think these change will represent that well enough while still retaining that open world feel. My only worry is that, with these changes I hope world vs world doesn't completely turn into a karma farming/ rank farming game mode. It should always be about the pvp first.

Well, I mean... it is built for it, it just wasn't built that well for it.  Better than some though.

"stay there for at least 4 weeks, and give the winner of this month a sizeable reward"

If there was any sort of actual reward for winning WvW or some rewards based on points, it would have lasted so much longer than it did. No matter what you do, people are what ruins whatever system you put in place b/c they want an edge, not looking for an even fight.

Too little too late. They screwed it up from the start by making it a esport league/season type thing instead of a persistent conflict like Daoc. Then they went and neglected the shit out of it for years. Not only that, but when a force can take major keeps in mere minutes what's the point in even defending it? All groups do is move to whichever keeps are empty at the time, then circle back and retake what was just taken, all while avoiding the enemy. Stupid concept, Arenanet screwed the pooch. It will take more than this to fix it.

    sigh..

Is this what Arena.net calls EFFORT ?

This is nothing more than saying we are going to make some VERY small changes to pvp to keep people interested in our game because we likely have something to sell by that time.

Well, that's what I'm trying to say. Frankly, anything above 5 player's and Guild Wars 2 becomes not only less balanced, but also completely unreadable due to particle overload.

You can see where their Guild Wars 1 experience influenced the game, as it functions very well with small coordinated teams, but in attempting to make a large scale MMO, Arenanet entered into territory they weren't prepared for. In pve, this doesn't tend to matter much, because a majority of play in most MMOs tends to be with 5 or less players, but there is simply no stable foundation for RvR PvP.

my feelings on this, is two fold.

First: I feel that something like this should have been done when they moved to PvE Mega-Server, leaving WvW server based when the rest of the game was not, really hurt WvW over the years. So in that front, I feel that this, is very late in coming.

Secondly: I have no idea how this will really pan out, it could be great, it could suck, and given how poorly some of their other things went, I am in a very tentative "wait and see" mode, with this.

I fear no MMO is. The focus on MMOs is generally yourself and a small group of 5-6 players so the more people you add the more chaos you get.  The largest group that truly can be controlled in a MMO is a 40 man raid and that is rather hard.

To have truly massive scaled combat done right you need formations, officers and a general that can deal out tactical objectives, and you need mechanics to help with that built in.

Certainly do a good comander help in GW2 but just like in any other MMO combat usually just turn into a huge zerg following that comander.

I have mixed feeling about breaking up the servers but I guess there wasn't much choice when about 5 of the servers have all the fun. It is a start but the game need actual massive combat mechanics as well.

Also, I think they should have different particle effects in WvW then PvE. What looks cool when you are 5 people gets very annoying when there are a 100 people...

Feels like this is happening far too late in the game's life cycle. This idea would've been great a few years ago. WvW was my favorite part of the game, but they abandoned it long ago. Most people that had an interest in things like this left the game already.

Used to play the game years ago, changes needed to happen then. Like others have said its a bit too late.

Cool idea. While I personally don't get anything out of WvW play, I know some of my GW2 pals thrive on it so this should make them happier.

As an rvr pvper who was too young and missed DOAC's prime, the bulk of my most enjoyable rvr memories and experiences occurred at GW2's launch. Yet, it lacked real progression and rewards and eventually everyone I knew, myself included, left within months. Then out of the blue my pvp guild decided to return to GW2 last week a mere days before this announcement, our spai game must be strong.

Just gonna say also.. that if Crowfall goes live before this gets implemented, there is a good chance I might not see this feature in action.

Well it's good that WvW is FINALLY getting the attention is deserves.
A bit late but good anyway.
I'll probably go back and try it out once it goes live.

To be honest, I feel bad for SoR, GSCH will most likely move on from GW2 once that sever closes down.. great story behind it tho.

Too little too late!! The HoT map change killed WvW and it took them to long to do anything about it and the hard core WvW players left the game and never came back, and I really dont see this bring life back into WvW.

Mass pvp? No thank you! I liked Guild Wars as I could explore and not risk getting ganked. Not a favourite pastime of mine. I'll not be adventuring there once this happens.

This will only be happening in The Mists, you won't be ganked anywhere in the open world.

The beauty of the BTP model is that those of you who want to give WvW another go after these changes is that it won't cost you anything except the download if you uninstalled.
