If you’re a PC gamer, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of NETGEAR’s NightHawk series. It’s well known for offering stellar performance and we were able to get our hands on the new X6S (R8000P) to put it through its paces. It’s the well-upgraded refresh to 2014’s X6. It’s a got more bandwidth, an improved processor, and Dual Gigabit Port Aggregation, but is it worth the $299 MSRP?

You can do better with a cisco router for $150. Problem with netgear is it is like the bestbuy of routers, overly expensive and flashy. I've also had mechanical failure with netgear, where as other brands no problem until I'm ready to upgrade. Their software is user friendly and damn near idiot proof so it's perfect for the common family that has no networking knowledge but lacking for those that have that knowledge. All for competition though, drive those prices down!

I just bought this myself and love the QoS features, the two 5Ghz bands and the ability to easily see up/down per device is great.

Since my last router was starting to overheat due to a dead fan (Apple AirPort Extreme) and these days my kids are now teenagers and have multiple devices (iPhones, iPads, game consoles etc.) not to mention Roku and everything I have it was getting to the point I needed more control over who is getting the bandwidth and have control over the wireless access late at night.

It was super easy to set up and I've set my gaming pc to have the highest QoS setting and everything else based on their use ... i.e. my son's xbox gets the high setting.. my daughters iPad gets the medium... my cameras get the lowest setting.

I'm just now returning back to gaming after a break so we'll see how well it performs once I get back to raiding but so far we've had no issues and it more than covers my 2,300 sqft house and I've removed an extender.

I think it was $300 well spent.

Cisco doesn't make consumer routers anymore and you're not going to get a good business grade router for home for $150, especially not one easy to configure or supporting advanced wireless features.

Cisco sold Linksys to Belkin. I don't consider Linksys a great option currently due to how their firmware updates function and how they have removed features from their routers during those updates.

Linksys offers 2 tri-band routers with mu-mimo, an AC4000 for $300 and an AC5400 for $400. If you're going to compare routers you should compare alikes. Linksys is literally the dumbed down router that removes user config options. It's why I migrated to Netgear in the first place.

You should do a little research because the Netgear router in the article is highly configurable including open DNS, QoS, advanced IPV 6 config, ip blocking, and most other advanced features including configuration as a hot spot or signal extender.
I will completely and whole heartedly disagree with you, my router on my desk says otherwise.  I went through 3 burned out netgear routers, the quality is abysmal, I work with other networkers that share my same view and have had the same problems.  Not to say you aren't entitled to yours as I mine.  Just not going to sway me on that one.

I liked the recover password feature of Nighthawk X6S AC4000. My older WiFi router didn't have this feature and once to change wireless SSID I had to reset that device and start reconfigure everything from ground zero simply because I did not remember the old password to login to setup page. https://www.corenetworkz.com/2018/04/setup-nighthawk-x6s-ac4000-tri-band-router.html However, I have to say its cost is high compared to other manufactures router models with similar features. If they could lower the price, this product will be a huge success.
