thinking playing a rogue or barbarian

im very serious on getting DDO probably tomorrow morning.  of all classes, im going to pick a rogue this time.  is a rogue a damage dealer class?  will i be able to do lots and lots of damage to a monster?

i was thinking of being a barbarian, but they seem to be something similar to a shadowknight on eq2.  SK were the most useless, unwanted class in the whole game of eq2, so barbarians seem to be something that would too be unwanted to a group.  that is if a group was forming someone wouldnt consider looking at a barbarian, instead would look for a tank, two dps, one crowd control and a healer.  where does a secondary tank fit in there?

however i like to be proven wrong.  what advantages does a barbarian have to ddo?  do lots of groups like to have a barbarian on their group?  do barbarians have a better time being asked and getting into groups then a rogue?

Have played: CoH, DDO EQ2, FFXI, L2, HZ, SoR, and WW2 online

Rogues are not really damage dealers in DDO. They are for spotting and disarming traps. Barbarians on the other hand are damage dealers. A level 6+ barbarian equipped with a keen sword is a power gamers' dream come true.

The typical make-up of a DDO groups looks like this:

    Wizard
    Fighter or Paladin
    Rogue
    Cleric
    Open spot #1
    Open spot #2

If you're a rogue people will want you in your group IF they don't already have a rogue. On the other hand, PUGs will seldom if ever have two rogues in the same group (I tried once, people whined about how underpowered the group was as a result). On the other hand, two barbarians in a group would be ok.

It depends.  You hafta look at your group.  At higher levels, rogues can hit pretty hard once they get there different spells/skills, but they will never be able to run up to a target and just hit it.  Normally, it involves like backstab or just mainly keeping the aggro off of you and keeping it in the tank while still damaging the target.

I don't play barbs, but I have seen that if you multiclass them right they are really good party members to have.  I'm thinking, a Barbarian/Bard or Barbarian/Cleric would prolly be a good choice. But, I have found that Paladins are a good class in DDO, ad that's what my guy is.

Rogues can do damage as well, just have to play him right. We're talking perspective here: you will need two wep fighting, wep finesse, lots and lots of dex (20+). Combine that with the nasty sneak attack and you have nice dmg, make sure you attack a target, that doesn't attack you. Having many skill points to spend, get a decent diplomacy, and use it everytime they try to attack you.

Also if you consider multiclassing the rogue, do so either with a fighter or ranger. These are common however, I would choose wizard...have a thing for spells...and never played tank :P
